As a self confessed geek, this show is just hilarious. The jokes are not mean or cruel, they just have an element of truth in them, situations or character traits are often taken to the extreme of course, which always makes for the best comedy.

A hilarious show with well thought out characters and episodes. Although the jokes about nerd culture won't appeal to all, and the sex references seem out of place it's a show I can recommend. And has me dying to watch season 2.

Atrociously overhyped. People who say they are nerds told me that I'd love this show. Honestly, The BIg Bang Theory is blackface for nerds. It's insulting to people who love geeky stuff, and to women in general, considering Penny is only there for the male characters to treat her like an alien because that's what the writers think people who are nerds do. This show attracts the worst kind of fanbase: pretentious smart people who think they're better than everyone, dumb people who laugh at anything that sounds funny or "weird", and people who think that they turn smart by watching this show. I'll just say it out loud. This show appeals to people who think they're smart because they "get" the scientific references or, as one might call them, jokes. Unforunately most of these fall totally flat and the added laugh track doesn't help. Quite the contrary, in my opinion it just reinforces the thought of this show being catered to not so smart people who have to be told when a jokeI'll just say it out loud. Quite the contrary, in my opinion it just reinforces the thought of this show being catered to not so smart people who have to be told when a joke was made. The actors are pretty bad in their delivery, I'm not surprised we don't see these people in any others works. The sheldon character is particularly badly played, with every line being so over the top it's just bafflin to me how this can be appealing. Also I don't see a lot of comedic talent in these actors, the delivery is usually very flat and emotionless. I get how the jokes are supposed to be funny but most of the times they just aren't. Occasionally a joke works but even then it's just mildly funny. I know the show because sometimes I sit through an episode with my flat mates, who like it. I heard so much hype about this show that I decided to give it a shot and watched maybe 5 episodes with the hopes that it might improve. I honestly didn't find it entertaining in the least, much less, funny. I consider myself a geek in a lot of respects so I thought I could empathize with the characters, but they're at best just stereotypical characters making for stale entertainment. The creators don't seem to see that understanding references to geek/nerd culture does't and and of itself make the show appealing to geeks and nerds. I don't mean to make a broad generalization here, but the friends of mine who do enjoy this show are the ones who have high thresholds for offensive content (i.e.: the idea that women will stop being rational and forgive your wrongs if you give them a tiara) and are typically thought of as the daft ones in the group, though, they don't identify as geeks or nerds either. This isnt comedy. This show is not funny in the slightest. And its not because im not clever enough to get the jokes, its because there are hardly any jokes in it, and whem one does finally come along, its the opposite of funny. Is there even a plot? I cannot believe the number of people that actually swallow this garbage.

Chuck Lorre is an absolute legend at least when it comes to this show. The actors also giving star performances. Only one complaint: although there is constant whining from the protagonists that their social and intellectual status prevents them from any physical relations that does not seem to be the case!

This show is entirely unrealistic but not in a good way. It relies on a cliched and offensive view of "geeks" & intelligent people that is entirely inaccurate. Being smart doesn't make you socially inept or prone to deliver corny & obvious science jokes. That said, a lot of people think this is how smart people behave. I guess you can't blame Chuck Lorre for pandering to that demographic.

Don't be fooled by the physicist characters and their occasional academic talk....this show is pretty low-brow. Sometimes the main characters are true-to-form, other times they just feel like stereotypes. And sometimes the show gives you Married With Children-style raunch. This is totally the funniest show on TV. Sometimes the jokes seem repeated, but they're still funny. Sheldon makes me laugh my ass out. Raj, Howard, Leonard, and Penny are also funny. The way Raj and Howard react to Leonard's mom accusing them of being in a homosexual relationship seems a little homophobic to me, but other than that, this is a Chuck Lorre masterpiece.

This is one of my favorite shows as a student. Many people don't really understand the humor incorporated into this TV show, but that doesn't give you a right to say it's a bad show. Think about it this way, you're still in grade school and still innocently pure and one day someone tells a dirty joke and everybody laughs. Now, you don't get it, and you automatically perceive it as a "bad joke" because you couldn't get the punch line. That's all I have to say about the humor. I, myself, honestly love it. It's very unique and has its own taste unlike the generic running gags of the many other sitcoms that exist.

Now, I have some things to say about the poorly written reviews given by the critics.

Maureen Ryan; Hi. I'm sorry, but does every TV Show have to be about characters who love each other all the time? In every little clique out there, and this is the truth, there has to be that ONE person we all hate. Dane Cook even said it himself. It's what makes everything funnier. We all pick at the guy, we laugh and make jokes behind his back, because as human beings we take joy in stepping on others. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, but it's the truth right? And it's funny, admit it. It's just a show with a character with a very unusual personality that contrasts the popular opinion on the sleek, funny guy who says the best punchlines and dirty jokes. I personally believe Sheldon was one of the reasons why this show is a success!

To Alan Sepinwall and Mike Duffy, I'm pretty sure the both of you choose the books with the best covers to read unless they're timeless classics or are critically acclaimed. TV Shows are like books. You can't judge them by their pilot episode. Remember that before you write a one line review that doesn't help define the interior of what you hated in the show. Sure, first impressions last, but do all the greatest people on Earth start out with an amazing background, family life, and education? Are you saying that because the pilot was uninteresting to you, you just automatically decide the show couldn't improve? Or that the writers have a surprise for you? Mr. Duffy, if you actually continued to watch the show before writing your first review, you would know that Jim Parson's characters doesn't even lust after Kaley Cuoco's character. But you didn't! Because you, like Mr. Sepinwall, judged The Big Bang Theory by its pilot and hated it. I sure hope you don't do that for all the TV Shows you review. What could be the greatest shows on earth don't deserve the low ratings they have based on one little pilot.

Don't get the humor? That's cool, this show is probably a little to intellectual for your taste. Offensive and stereotypical? Um, mostly all shows are offensive and stereotypical. There's going to be offensive stuff out there in the world. You can't stop satirical comedy. Just deal with it. The Big Bang Theory really can't be compared to any other show. It's its own genre, its own kind of humor, and its own lovable characters.

Those who write that just want to put the ratings down. Really, nothing more than that. How can one give less than 5 points for this? Sorry, I won't see which sitcoms you rate higher.
Sheldon is the most intimidating geek ever seen on TV, the others are not far behind. The only issue I have at the moment is that most jokes base on sexual relationships or intersexual behaviour.

Some episodes are almost classics. Great unique episodes you will never forget and you do not experience watching other sitcoms.

Can this show get any funnier? I even laugh when I hear Howard's mother screaming from another room. I laugh from start to finish as this ensemble cast is simply the best. The writers on this series earn their payday and then some as each line is funnier than the next. I do miss it not being on Monday with those other strong comedy shows. I do not watch the other shows on Thursday.

The show's portrayal of true geekery is dead on and the jokes requires geek knowledge or at least exposure to true geekdom to understand. The fact that some of the "professional" reviewers rated the show so low, and their reviews, shows that they have no idea what they're talking about. Obviously, the real comedy in the show is going right over their heads.

That being said, there are many flaws that keep it from being appreciable by all geeks. Firstly, occasionally its science is wrong in a way that would actually make the episode different; and yet just about every geek in this seems to have vast stores of knowledge on every form of science, which makes it harder to believe the characters and actually kills the possibility of more geek jokes (sociologist and a biologist duking it out over biological essentialism?). The distinction between the geeks lie in social stereotypes (the uber-nerd, the horny-guy, the Indian, etc.) rather than fields of study. Even so, there is a strong emphasis on straight, white, male nerds, with only a token Indian male and White female. Unless we're looking at specifically D&D nerds (which are still not homogeneous), it's incredibly misrepresentative to not include more "minorities" in the regular cast and it can alienate the many viewers who can get the jokes but can't relate. The central plotline (romantic tension with the neighbor) is much harder to believe as the neighbor, Penny, is stupid, ignorant, not in the slightest bit curious about what they're talking about, is stereotypically 'blonde,' and has absolutely no chemistry with the male lead. In fact, the only thing that implies that there is any chemistry between her and the main character, Leonard, is the terribly abused laugh track, which makes some of the more subtle jokes fall on their face or be neglected entirely. It seems that the laugh track is intended to tell the non-science geeks when they should laugh, but reviews by non-geeks reveal that it's not helping. The good aspects of this show lie in the geek in-jokes. Some are simply cheesy, but overall they appeal to higher thought and involve an array of sciences. While the plotlines are underdeveloped, most of the humor is based in researched science makes it worth watching. Even the factual inaccuracies are excuseable as it is militant in defining the scientific method with accuracy. Overall, it's a fun watch, but it's a long way from being a respectable portrayal of geeks. Expand

The show might even have been engaging, if the one-liners came less frequently and the characters had a little more dimension. As it is, Sheldon and Leonard are merely laughable, if sweet, and they are even less fleshed out than the characters on "Two and a Half Men."
