Like several of the original "30 for 30" films, it gets hamstrung in spots by a particular filmmaking choice, the story itself is so strong, as are the recollections of the people who went through it, that I very much recommend watching.
-
The film, directed by Nelson George, is extraordinary as the basketball player and the man himself.
-
Like the wonderful documentaries of ESPN's "30 for 30" series, The Announcement not only captures a remarkable person and an unforgettable moment, it proves once again the universal appeal and importance of professional sports.
-
Magic Johnson narrates much of this astonishing story in a trademark genial manner, giving a storybook quality to the early chapters of instant fame, glory and goodwill.
-
There's no denying the emotion in what transpired, firmly placing this in the same elite league with some of the sports network's fine "30 for 30" documentaries.
-
A well-crafted documentary directed by Nelson George tracking Johnson's life, from when he landed in Los Angeles, led the Lakers to championship titles, and how upon learning of his diagnosis helped change the world.
