    Some will derive pleasure merely from vetting the authenticity of the clothes and materiel, the accuracy of the action, the appropriateness of the locations. There are many old trains to admire, puffing prettily along mountain riverbeds.

    The cinematography is admirable, and the accounts from historians and academics are sound. But the sight of Burt Reynolds in rose-tinted glasses explaining that George Armstrong Custer “was a hell of a soldier” does little to inform the project.

    From a historical perspective, this series contains both pluses and minuses. First, any historically accurate item is a plus for audiences that get very little American history. But here I will focus on the minuses.
    1. President Lincoln is hardly mentioned, but it was Lincoln's failure to secure an early peace that caused all of the follow-on problems of Reconstruction, KKK-like groups, Jim Crow laws, etc. That is, most of our current race issues date back too the Civil War. Lincoln was also responsible for several American Indian atrocities including the Navajo Round-up. But modern historians love to protect Lincoln and blame other characters (e.g. General Sherman) for all the bad behavior.
