Summerwater feels like it’s too in love with showing the inner workings of the bent brains of its characters than actually advancing plot or making the main characters into something more than caricatures.
-
Although Summerwater isn’t devoid of redemptive moments, and its effort not to stick to the template of crime mysteries powered by buried secrets is admirable, it ends up as a drama that makes you want to back out of the room slowly and carefully.

Scott is always watchable but can’t rise above the quality of the material. It’s all too slow, too sombre.

I’m afraid Summerwater is really quite depressing. Others may disagree, but I found episode one dourly intense, pouring on the “eerie dreamlike” stuff with a ladle and taking about 40 minutes to become interesting.
