Jesse Armstrong subverted our expectations by killing his most complex, intriguing and brilliant character, Logan Roy, the series soul, the reason why everything started, he's gone, and it wasn't easy to watch, uncomfortable, sad and brutally painful. By the time you read this, I have no more words to describe this show creativity and intelligence, Jesse is a genius, the cast is terrific, perfect and inspired as never. I have no idea of where succession is going to, i don't know how it's going to end, i honestly have no idea how they'll manage to conduct the next 7 episodes without their most important character, but I'm very sure of one thing, Logan Roy (brilliantly played by Brian Cox) will be remembered as one of the best characters in TV's history Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The entire show has a writing and directing style that is above board. This episode was nothing short of a masterpiece in so many ways. Chuck Palahniuk once wrote "The world won't end with a whimper or a bang, but with a discreet, tasteful announcement: 'Bill Rivervale, phone call holding, line two.' Then nothing". This episode was the embodiment of that quote. The shock and awe of an inevitable event coming in such a realistic and mundane fashion sets the tone for the episode that must quickly deal with mourning of the larger-than-life titan of a monster you call "Dad". The audience much like Logan's children, don't accept the death until a sentence is spoken and everyone understands - this is not a drill. Then you proceed to view each character quickly need to deal with the nuanced and complicated feelings they have towards the man they hated and admired. The emotional turmoil is enough to invoke emotions from dedicated viewers but the camera panned right at each characters face as they are dealing with everything and the amazing acting skills from each actor to see it all on their face is so heart wrenching and you cannot look away. This episode was so big yet handled in such a mundane way it gave the audience much like the characters, not much room to process or grieve. One thing is certain, everything and everyone is about to change and the knifes are coming out. Expand
