It's great. The 80's stylising helps the yarn chug along quite merrily.

    However........

In the first episode during Eleven's introduction, it dawned on me that her whole character synopsis and back story had been lifted wholesale from Elfen Lied, even down to the relationship she has with her 'papa'

All the goonies/super 8 stuff that people talk about was influential but Eleven herself was bordering on downright plagiarism and it spoilt it for me because i knew exactly what she could do and where she would end up halfway through the first episode.

The best original Netflix series yet, right up there with Daredevil. A thrilling thought provoking rolling coaster that has you totally wondering what the **** is going on until they finally string it all together in last few episodes. The second season cant come soon enough.

I do not understand why the hype is so much. This series is very predictable and uses all the clichés we expect in such films. I do not see anything ground-breaking in this TV show and I guess people like it because they haven't been exposed to great TV show.

Brilliant TV Show. By far the best horror tv series I've seen. The characters are brilliant, the acting is simply spectacular (you would expect that from Winona Ryder, but every single actor does a marvelous job), interesting plot (this coming from someone that's not a big fan of horrors), and incredible directing. Top notch TV show, can't wait for Season 2.

One word: Awesome. Great casting, writing, directing, and acting. Winona gave a stellar performance for her character. The kids of the show is great, probably one of the greatest performance gave by younger actors and actresses. Telling yourself, "just one more episode" will be lie and you will realize that you are already at the finale. Thrilling and exciting.

Stranger Things was created by The Duffer Brothers and tells the story of a boy named Will Byers who disappears and his mother, the police chief and a group of friends who are investigating trying to find out what happened while some strange, other-worldly forces might be involved in some way. I'm gonna try to avoid spoilers in this review in case anyone hasn't seen it.

So, first off, the quality. If you are well-versed in the cinema of the 1980's or literature of the 1980's then it's very clear to you that this show was inspired by Stephen King's early novels and Stephen Spielberg's early films. And if you're a fan of these things, which I am, then this will obviously be a plus for you. I am instantly hooked on this show just by the way it looks. It's obvious that the duffer brothers are fans of this source material because everything from the opening logo, which looks just like Stephen Kin's font for his earliest books to mini-plot elements sharing themes to Spielberg's movies as well as Stephen King's books.

The main hook of this show is the disappearance of this boy and his mother trying to search for him, played by Winona Ryder, very well I might add. A police chief, played by David Harbour, whose downward character progression really hooked me into this show. I thought David Harbour was great in this and his character was amazing. Also great characters were the three kids searching for their missing friend. These kids were gold, they were funny, likeable and actually acted like kids! Also the older brother of Will, played by Charlie Heaton was excellent because he was kind of the reserved character, the loner. Also, Winona Ryder's character, who starts to go insane, at least to most people.

Is it perfect, almost, but it has faults and as much as I want to give it a 10, I can't. Also, there are some striking resemblances to E.T.

I watched this show due to the positive buzz it's gotten (including the ratings from this very site), but given the high expectations I had as a result, I found Stranger Things to be profoundly disappointing.

The show is simplistic enough that you can completely sum it up with a short mathematical equation: Stranger Things = (Poltergeist + Super 8)/10. It's completely unoriginal and vastly inferior to its obvious "inspirations", if one may be gracious enough to call them such. "Total ripoff" is the phrase that comes more easily to my mind.

Other than the visual effects, which are actually surprisingly good, the show is inferior in every respect: writing, directing, casting, music... you name it. The acting is especially atrocious. In particular Winona Ryder is simply unbearable. I always want to like her, but she always lets me down. In this case almost every scene she's in consists of her constantly shrieking, to the point where I want to reach for the mute button whenever she's on-screen. Many of the other actors are children so maybe it's a little harsh to be too hard on them -- but other shows and films have proven that it is possible to find quality child actors, and in this case, frankly, they did not. With just one exception (the gap-toothed kid) the young actors all pretty much stink. Sorry, kids.

The soundtrack has also been getting a lot of buzz, but I have to believe that's just nostalgia talking. It literally sounds like it was composed on a vintage Casio keyboard. That fact alone seems to be enough to make many people absolutely love it. I, on the other hand, would also have liked the music to be... you know... good. It isn't. It sounds like something your 10-year-old nephew came up with. Sure, he worked hard on it and you have to tell him it's great, but let's be honest: you can't wait for him to stop playing.

They were obviously going for 80's nostalgia in this show and I think that objective is what people are responding to. If you have very low standards, you might enjoy this show just for the atmosphere it tries (IMO unsuccessfully) to achieve. But If you're looking for that sort of thing, you're much better off renting Super 8 instead and sparing yourself many hours of disappointment.

The story is really unique, and even though the ending kind of tied things up, the audience knows it's not over (whatever 'it' is). The cast was stellar: Ryder gives the best performance of her career. And I've always been a huge David Harbour fan. The cast of kids did a fine job. Usually, I find child actors to be annoying or to take away from the viewing experience (hello, Sons of Anarchy and Dexter). I really liked how the supporting cast members developed into more complicated roles. The girl who plays '11' is outstanding. She made everything work. I came away from this show with that good feeling you get with a show does some real world-building. The secondary stories of romance and school bullies worked well. Everything felt realistic, and with the 80s setting and music, I bought in, 100%. I really liked how the monster was shown only in glimpses for much of the show. It was effective and scary. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I only manage to accomplish that by "purge watching." It's my new term. It's the opposite of "binge watching" where you're apparently so enraptured by a show you can't stop watching. "Purge watching" is when you can't wait for a series to be over, so you use the fast forward button during the throw-away, tempo-killing scenes. A number of critics thought 8 hours devoted to the somewhat thin story of "Stranger Things" was excessive. I was thinking about the story in my head, and if it hadn't been given the soap opera drag out treatment, condensed down to a 2-hour movie it would have been even worse -- exposing more clearly the basic silliness and retread plot. The watered-down tempo helped what otherwise would have been Cream of Condensed Crap. You could claim running the same old numbers is in the name of "homage" or you could argue there's really not a lot of new ideas in the show. It's okay. But everyone seems to need to think they've found the next big buzz word (most of the times those are websites angling to stir up excitement) when maybe they've found an okay little show. Which is what Stranger Things is to me: an okay little show. From the first scene where the scientists get pulled upward into the elevator, dangled by an unseen beast, I went "ho hum." Like I haven't see that visual in a million monster films. An old clever show like the X-Files would have had a pair of eyes creepily material in the wall of an elevator and then maybe the doors close and a scream. That show as extremely creative at coming up with original ideas and images -- which is why it was a great show. But immediately I wasn't that impressed with the "Duffer Brothers" mise en scene. I need more "things I've never seen before" from Sci-fi. And little touches like the elevator scene are where true originals and moderate talents separate themselves.
I nearly bailed completely on the series. Episode 3&4 were sluggishly directed by Shawn Levy, who is pretty much an incompetent as a stylist. By episode 4, it has completely lost the "vintage feel" and leaning on the influences of contemporary cable: Let's play a moving piece of rock music over a montage of the different actors staring thoughtfully into space. The music swells... It's the HBO Method of audience intercourse. A directorial cliche. Sorry, but this doesn't have the "feel" of a 70s or 80s production at all, maybe a bit in the opening episode or two, but it pretty much is quickly replaced by a run-of-the-mill cable show feel. Vintage Spielberg always had a very kinetic feel. 70s and early 80s films were riffing off the vibe of Altman, Pennebaker, Penn, but sanitizing them a bit and joking them up. The vibe of this series is probably closest in spirit to the lousy cheapie Steven King films, and not in a good way. It's a leaden feel. I'm still skeptical of the "tribue" aspect of this show The Winonna"Poltergiest" ripoff/tribute is the worst bit so far. So stupid. Where's the dwarf psychic? As I also noted they managed to pay "homage" to "Under the Skin" :Alien" "The Twilight Zone: and "Pan's Labyrinth" That's nostalgia? Hmmm. Honestly, is this really a tribute or is just the ultimate recycling job. If your pose a show as a tribute (and make sure to let people know up front to cover your tracks) does that eradication the icky "borrowing." I think a couple of producers (the Duffers you would assume) sat down and saidL "Yeah, I like the kid with powers from FireStarter, let's use that. (And also I hadn't gotten to the part where they even steal David Keith's nosebleeds from "Firestarter" at the time of my last comment) And the kids from "It". The whole kid thing from King. "Alien" was a great movie. How about goo? And we'll stay away from the afterlife and just make it a portal to another dimension...." Add Shaw Levy's teleplay staging (someone should let him know the camera moves) and it's all a bit snoozy. By the way, I also notice that the Duffer Brothers didn't write the series. They farmed out the episodes to a bunch of writer. Right there, their auteur status goes down the drain, IMO.

The first half of the season is solid and takes its time introducing you to the world, and it's fantastic because of it. Each episode ends with a mystery that begs you to play the next episode even when it's already 2 in the morning.

The second half of the season loses some of the charm it had in the previous episodes, as it focuses on resolving the plot, which is does well. The mysteries are explained, but at the cost of staying intriguing. The nice thing is that unlike LOST, it does answer the big questions it asks.

The show wraps up nicely, and if there is no second season, it leaves you feeling resolved and satisfied. However, it does set up a second season, and I am definitely looking forward to it.

Not only was I pleasantly surprised by the well-conceived narrative, but I found myself actively engaged in spotting all the cinematic references in this series.

The most obvious is Spielberg. It's kind of a Goonies meet Poltergeist on the surface, but the Duffer Brothers also dig deep into fantasy novels, games, comic books and music of that era to create a wonderful facsimile of the early 80s.. The kids steal the show. It is a casting director's dream to find such young previously unheard talent. The four boys come together as effortlessly as Carl Reiner's lads from Stand By Me. Add in their passion for Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings, and you can't help but be swept away by this series.

My only real disappointment was Winona Ryder. She was a great casting call, given her late 80s pedigree, but her voice is irritating beyond belief. I don't know if this is what she sounds like now or this was what she felt a distraught mother sounds like, but it is like scratching a chalkboard. She has her moments, like stringing up all the Christmas lights to communicate with her lost son, but for the most part she is insufferable to watch.

David Harbour is excellent as a sheriff who found a small town to hide out in, thinking nothing bad could possibly happen here. Unfortunately for him, he runs up against the worst sort of evil that turns your world literally upside down. While the kids carry most of the load, Sheriff Hopper keeps this narrative grounded. His initial distance and ultimately his total commitment provide just the right balance to a series of unfortunate events spinning wildly out of control.

I am also glad the Duffer Brothers didn't take themselves too seriously. Gaten Matarazzo has the best lines and makes the most of them. Hard to believe he had only one television appearance before this. He becomes the de facto leader of the group, largely thanks to his ability to keep things in perspective thanks to his robust knowledge of the fantasy world and his ability to quickly assimilate scientific principles. His phone call with the science teacher was priceless.

Millie Brown is probably the most seasoned young actor, but oddly distant in her role as Eleven.. As my daughter pointed out, you don't feel as much for her as you feel you should, but that is in large part because she remains an "alien force," or wierdo, as Dustin calls her. She reminded me a bit of Saoirse Ronan in Hanna.

Taken as a whole, Strangers Things comes together nicely. The ending could have been a bit stronger, but I assume we will learn more in the second season, once the folks at Neflix have let the show "breathe a little bit."

Stephen King met Steven Spielberg and decided to create a little something for TV... It's a plausible scenario considering the quality of screenplay and story in this tv show. It takes place in the 80s, has a group of kids playing DnD, running around in bikes, meeting strange adventures and will surely bring nostalgia to many of the viewers. I don't quite agree with the opinions about 11 (Elle). I think she made the movie more intriguing, a tiny hero that fought the 'big guys', who was snatched from her mother at birth and never had a normal childhood or normal, close relationships, so much so that she did not understand the most basic concepts, like 'friend.' All she was to these morons, was a test-subject, with little regard for her humanity. The show looks incredible, it's really well crafted, the cast, the cinematography, the pace, everything is put together very wisely and works really well. With two exceptions. One is the soundtrack. That's a minor weakness of the show itself, but it's kind of annoying (a bunch o synth noises blended to resemble some 80s soundtracks, but really unnecessary; it kills the mood at some points - they should have gone with orchestra and weird noises only). Anyway, the soundtrack shouldn't keep anyone from watching it, so just keep it as a side-note.
The other exception is the reason why this is not a 'must watch' and why it won't grow to be classic (at least if it keeps with the approach of s1). If you looked at other reviews you probably noticed that most of them describe Stranger Things as putting together the best of many things (Stephen Kings stuff, Spielberg's stuff, X Files, Super 8 etc). That's precisely what the show does, but, because of that, very early in the season you start having the following kind of experience: you are watching it, then something happens on the show and you thing "Oh cool, they're doing that Super 8 thing here'. A few minutes later, something else happens and you thing "Oh here's that Silent Hill kinda thing, interesting!" And that happens way too often (all the time actually) and you start to realize that for every event in the show you catch the reference/inspiration source, you already know the overall its resolution (because they will wrap up events very similarly as done in the film/series/game that served their inspiration source), As consequence, Stranger Things becomes very predictable and does not build anything on its own, it does not develop its own identity as a story. After all episodes, all you've watched is a bucket of great ideas that were already marvelously executed in the past, and although it is great to see them all coordinated into a single piece of work, it is not as great as watching them from the source.

If your purpose for reading this review is to help determine if you should watch STRANGER THINGS, then I tell you this: do you like media of 80s suburbia, monsters, Stephen King and Stephen Spielberg? Yes? There’s your answer. Go watch it. It’s only seven hours over eight episodes on Netflix. A splendid way to spend an open afternoon.

I was born in 1982. STRANGER THINGS is set in 1983. Its protagonists, style and world are not of my youth as directly experienced, but instead the nerdy youth I saw depicted on TV and the movies that repeated on cable channels. STRANGER THINGS could be one of those, with its story, production design and characters. It bleeds 1980s. It’s a horror FREAKS AND GEEKS. Look at that poster; reminiscent of Drew Struzan along with the awesome new covers for SHOUT/SCREAM Factory Collector’s editions) and its title font. Those alone tell you where the aim of the Duffer Brothers who created the show and wrote and/or directed most the episodes. STRANGER THINGS is a love letter to family friendly horror and science-fiction of Stephen Spielberg (mostly works he has produced) and even Stephen King who technically isn’t family friendly but still revered by youth. In fact, the only things to keep it from looking fully like a lost-classic-refound is the modern-style CGI of the monster and other supernatural elements (these elements being left vague by me purposely) and its length. That length is not a problem. The Netflix original has eight episodes, totaling around seven hours. This may be just the right length. If shortened to a 120 minute feature, it would be strong with decently well-drawn characters and well moving plot. With the extra five hours, it gives more time for the characters to develop and the many intersecting plotting groups to come together as they each solve different aspects of the mystery of the missing pre-teen geek Will Banks. It’s odd to look back and realize the full show was seven hours long because it doesn’t feel like it, not at all. This sucker moves. Character moments and arcs are given breathing room to develop well but does not feel like there is stalling or unnatural in moving across plot points too fast: how many times in films can you remember when a character suddenly has a revelation or other deus-ex-machina that exists just to push to the climax? With the excess time the plot threads can come together naturally. I won’t ruin here the ways those plots play out at all, leaving you to see how wonderful and clever (and often referential) they are.
Those several plot threads each contain their own sets of interconnecting characters, approaching the many mysteries and secrets of STRANGER THINGS from different angles. There is the nasty monster escaped from a shadowy government agency near the town, a psychic kid, other dimensions and other fantastical elements built around a grounded set of characters who lend heart to the story. Will’s mother is played by Winona Ryder in her best role since the 80s; her journey of searching, connecting with something (did I mention there is the possibility of a haunting too?), and trying to accept loss while not giving up on Will is heartbreaking and a true arc. There are times where she gets a little scenery chewing but usually gives a commanding performance, setting the pathos for the show. Joining her is the Small-Town-Sheriff ™, balancing the duties of his department and what he knows he needs to do. Will’s friends are all so well ripped from the 80s that I’m positive they were frozen in 1983 for the very purpose to make this show now. They ARE the quintessential 80s dorky-outcasts: bullied D&D players who love their science fiction and horror movies and TV and science itself. The characters and the actors are sincere: lovable but not twee. They provide many of the 70s and 80s reference drops as geeks like us tend to do (and cover their walls in now classic posters of THE THING – which does appear on screen and JAWS). The influences are on the sleeves of these kids. I want to particularly note Gaten Matarazzo as the adorkable Dusty, the most enthusiastic of the group, and Millie Bobbie Brown as Eleven, a young girl trying to figure herself out. Also along are Will’s older brother and one of Will’s friend’s sister who is looking for her own missing best friend.
As has been stated – STRANGER THINGS feels fully 80s. Huge love for the production and set designers create this world. The look of every home and more importantly, stuff in them from furniture (the Byer’s home coffee table…) to posters to the damned wood paneling, is ripped from my memories. I’m about ten years younger than the protagonists but it feels how I remember. The production design is top notch. This isn’t a parody or over-the-top 80s that pop-culture often latches to, but a true 80s.
    Finally, the music.

Not many actors in this show were well known and brought attention for their name (the only actor I recognized to be frank was Winona Ryder) but that was ok. The script and their acting was so impeccable that they did not need to have big names to attract viewers. The show always left you wanting more and rushing to make theories (which we all most likely got wrong). The cinematography was amazing and the characters were dynamic and static. Some characters changed as the story went through. Everything counted for the show was amazing and I'd like to thank everyone who put into it. The actors, the screenwriters, the directors, the cinematographers, the light and audio specialists, the music coordinators, the special effects and general video editors, the props crew, the makeup and costume artists. Basically anyone who did anything to support this show, has my utmost respect, admiration, and gratitude. Thank you so much. Expand

Solid 10. 8 episodes building up nicely and smoothly - as for what the show is about? Read below or watch a trailer. To anyone complaining that it's in the 80s: it only works that way BECAUSE it's set in the age of minor technological advancements. Otherwise, it'd be X Files 2016 or any other mediocre scifi, solving that **** in seconds ;)

For me this was a perfect show. It was thrilling, scary and addicting, but managed to stay clear of angst. It had great characters: the kids, the teens as well as the adults. It gave food for thought, made me laugh out loud a few times and left an unexpected warm feeling behind after the last episode.

If Super 8 was good and made into a TV show with a quantum twist, it wouldn't be as good as this. A combination of the good parts of Super 8 (not as operatic), seasons one and two of the X-Files, E.T. and the best 80s Synth I've heard since the 80s.

Seriously, in my opinion, even the music is amazing.

This gets a perfect 10 from me, even though the final questions left were total ripoffs, they shouldn't make another season as the ingenuity & novelty of this perfect throwback to 80's kid adventure scifi would be lessened by just another season trying to tack on. There isn't much in the way of surprises, or twists. At least I didn't think so, and it didn't seem to take away from the quality of the show. The show centered mostly around the younger actors in the show. They probably took up the largest amount of screen time while the rest of it was split up between parents of the children and their older siblings. It's kind of like "Super 8" in that regard; and also in other plot details, which is as far as I'll go with that because of "spoilers". I can see the "E.T." comparisons, but it was more like the two of those movies got busy and it's love child was this. Ultimately, I know a show that centers on children can turn some people off of this; in which case, they could easily annoy you and ruin this show. However, if the trailer intrigued you and you started it and are feeling a bit lukewarm towards it, it may take a couple episodes to get you vested in it. I feel by the end of the 3rd episode, you'll know for sure how you'll feel about the rest of it. I'd say this show is more emotional and character driven, then it would be story driven. Like I said earlier, it's a bit predictable story wise. Definitely a worthy addition to Netflix's list of shows. Don't know if it'll get a 2nd season; it's hard to see how they'd get another quality season out of it, but they did have some minor things at the end of the last episode that could lead into a similar situation occurring in the near future of the town. Stranger Things rides on music and props for the incessent claims that fill the reviews, of how nostalgic the show is. While it excels at achieving this in the music (11/10 for ambient, 10/10 on radio release), the rest is pure set-dressing. Once you realize that (towards the end of episode two for me), you begin to mentally filter the ambient (Carpenter-esque) mood music, leaving you with little to inspire actual nostalgia. The story falls *far* short from that mark, regardless of how promising it was the start. What seems like an interesting mix of classics, turns into a free-for-all, where anything and everything from the 80s seems to have been sourced. It would have been far better to pick two or three influences and just stick to those. The end result is something of a mess, and not nearly as satisfying as could have been hoped for at the start.

The early episodes are so padded out that this should have been a six episode run, not eight. The characters are the purest cliches, and some of the set pieces were blatantly "borrowed", but without the gravitas that the originals became instant classics for (e.g. the Stand By Me kids walking down rail tracks). The entire last episode is a mix of Silent Hill and Alien, to the point where Netflix should be making sure that Fox does not own the IPRs to both of them. There is little the author/directors did not already use from the 80s which means the next season will have to start getting creative. Considering they did not show much creativity this season, I cannot expect it to hold this rating next year. That is unless chain smoking (even when not stressed), or continually calling a wrap regardless of the performance is now considered 'creative'.

Also, disregard the claims of Goonies influence. Apparently the people claiming this did not pay attention to the fact that each Goonies was distinctly talented, required for the successful ending of the story, and most importantly, were fun. The kids in this one are nothing more than filler, unfortunately. Eleven is a speical case, and not one of the gang.

Overall, it is watchable, though you can easily skip certain performances without losing any of the story. This season is a good time-waster, and could only be shown as on-demand so binge-watching with judicious use of fast forward (or skip) will allow you to minimize the padding. If it had been boiled down to six it probably would have been worth a 7.5.

The show also wears all of it's influences on its sleeve, making it feel like homage rather than something unique or vital. If you grew up with 80s horror movies, Akira, ET, etc. you are probably going to roll your eyes at just how on the nose some of this stuff is. The title credits are even in the same font as Stephen King's as it appears on many of his novels. Stranger Things > Stephen King. Get it? Pays homage to the 1980's movies which featured science fiction themes and young kids. Also shows like "Eerie Indiana" and "Twilight Zone" were big influences.
