There are quality chilling moments. In addition to the obvious films/series it pulls from I also feel it is reminiscent of both the more recent excellent film, Midnight Special, and a really great cult-favorite film from only a few years ago called Beyond The Black Rainbow (the film was more artsy and not mainstream at all, but there are similar elements. BTBR is incredible if you can suss out the story on your own instead of being spoonfed). Some of the acting is a bit over-the-top and occasionally unintentionally funny, but I can overlook those flaws. For the most part the series has had me eager to watch all eight episodes as quickly as possible. It doesn't feel like a rip-off. It does feel like a loving echo of past classics pulled together in mosaic respect. As of now, my only feeling is that it doesn't necessarily offer much we haven't seen before, but offers it to us in an exciting, vintage fashion. I am about to press play on the final episode. This has been a fun rollercoaster ride. I am hoping for a second season. The creators, etc have already stated that season 2 will be more of a sequel cousin than a direct continuation of Season 1. We shall see. One strength is that there aren't alot of big name actors/actresses here so it really lends to the feeling of this being everyday folks experiencing an usual disturbance in their small town. Expand

The story is original and very well made, its scientific, funny, exciting and gives you a rush at times. Watch it now.
I binged watched the 8 episodes because I couldn't wait to see what happens at the end.

One thing is that I hope they don't make a season 2, the show was perfect and everything was an unknown, making season 2 will not have the same effect.

Joe Dante was/is one of the biggest movie geeks turned director, and the Duffer Brothers are cut from the same cloth. Winona Ryder is top cast, but the real stars are the young cast of actors, from the main trio, El, and the high schoolers, across the board, they're all excellent. A special mention of the performance of character actor David Harbour as the police chief. I've seen him in supporting roles before, but he really shines as the haunted policeman. Just enjoy. Expand

Stephen King met Steven Spielberg and decided to create a little something for TV... It's a plausible scenario considering the quality of screenplay and story in this tv show. It takes place in the 80s, has a group of kids playing DnD, running around in bikes, meeting strange adventures and will surely bring nostalgia to many of the viewers. Incredible work, don't miss it !!

Solid 10. 8 episodes building up nicely and smoothly - as for what the show is about? Read below or watch a trailer. To anyone complaining that it's in the 80s: it only works that way BECAUSE it's set in the age of minor technological advancements. Otherwise, it'd be X Files 2016 or any other mediocre scifi, solving that **** in seconds ;)

Stranger Things starts out with immense promise, tons of suspense and mystery. At the end of the first season I felt that the show had been cut short with questions left unanswered. It's shot well and I love the 80s vibe. I look forward to seeing how the second season goes as well. I likely wouldn't repeat watch the first season though.

For me this was a perfect show. It was thrilling, scary and addicting, but managed to stay clear of angst. It had great characters: the kids, the teens as well as the adults. It gave food for thought, made me laugh out loud a few times and left an unexpected warm feeling behind after the last episode.

The tone, pacing, acting (although Ryder was a bit shrill but then I've never lost a child), and music were equal to the throwback monster/sci-fi plot. Everyone (well, the main characters, at least) had such an excellent depth to them and I loved how they all felt very realistic and dynamic the whole way through. The mystery was compelling and, while it certainly borrowed elements from other films and stories, I didn't feel like it was obnoxious about it and it had enough of its own flavour. The ending was reasonably satisfying without being saccharine and leaving a few threads open to interpretation. While I wouldn't say the story was mind-blowing, it was an entertaining way to spend two evenings so that's certainly good enough for me. Expand

The first half of the season is solid and takes its time introducing you to the world, and it's fantastic because of it. Each episode ends with a mystery that begs you to play the next episode even when it's already 2 in the morning.

The second half of the season loses some of the charm it had in the previous episodes, as it focuses on resolving the plot, which is does well. The mysteries are explained, but at the cost of staying intriguing. The nice thing is that unlike LOST, it does answer the big questions it asks.

The show wraps up nicely, and if there is no second season, it leaves you feeling resolved and satisfied. However, it does set up a second season, and I am definitely looking forward to it.

This show really shows the best of 80s classic movies with an awesome soundtrack , think about that deep lying throughout Intersteller. If you could merge Goonies, ET, Close Encounters, Alien, Nightmare on Elm street and Stand by me this is what you would end up with and so brilliantly done.

Interesting. The story is like reading a Dean Koontz or a Stephen King, but it plods instead of shocks and this is largely due its Super 8 investment from its child actors causing the dialogue too suffer and draw. There isn't much in the way of surprises, or twists. At least I didn't think so, and it didn't seem to take away from the quality of the show. The show centered mostly around the younger actors in the show. They probably took up the largest amount of screen time while the rest of it was split up between parents of the children and their older siblings. It's kind of like "Super 8" in that regard; and also in other plot details, which is as far as I'll go with that because of "spoilers". I can see the "E.T." comparisons, but it was more like the two of those movies got busy and it's love child was this. Ultimately, I know a show that centers on children can turn some people off of this; in which case, they could easily annoy you and ruin this show. However, if the trailer intrigued you and you started it and are feeling a bit lukewarm towards it, it may take a couple episodes to get you vested in it. I feel by the end of the 3rd episode, you'll know for sure how you'll feel about the rest of it. I'd say this show is more emotional and character driven, then it would be story driven. Like I said earlier, it's a bit predictable story wise. Definitely a worthy addition to Netflix's list of shows. Don't know if it'll get a 2nd season; it's hard to see how they'd get another quality season out of it, but they did have some minor things at the end of the last episode that could lead into a similar situation occurring in the near future of the town. All in all, it's 8 good episodes of mystery and goonie like suspense. It's well polished, but in the final episodes and its conclusion I was left feeling it was incredibly un-original, perhaps it was meant to feel like a rehash mix of 80s classics, and originality wasn't desired. I can't give it 10 because it didn't live up to the hype, it wasn't scary once in 8hours (as it says HORROR on the genre) and if it wasn't for the kids acting abilities and the 80s setting, I dont think people would of sat through the season.

Season 2... does it need it? No. The Duffer brothers have made a successful series, I truly hope we dont see this expand to 5 or 7 seasons that become as lost as LOST, or worst still, as painfully unguided and boring as the Walking Dead became after season 3 (I quit watching during S6)

The show looks incredible, it's really well crafted, the cast, the cinematography, the pace, everything is put together very wisely and works really well. With two exceptions. One is the soundtrack. That's a minor weakness of the show itself, but it's kind of annoying (a bunch o synth noises blended to resemble some 80s soundtracks, but really unnecessary; it kills the mood at some points - they should have gone with orchestra and weird noises only). Anyway, the soundtrack shouldn't keep anyone from watching it, so just keep it as a side-note.
The other exception is the reason why this is not a 'must watch' and why it won't grow to be classic (at least if it keeps with the approach of s1). If you looked at other reviews you probably noticed that most of them describe Stranger Things as putting together the best of many things (Stephen Kings stuff, Spielberg's stuff, X Files, Super 8 etc). That's precisely what the show does, but, because of that, very early in the season you start having the following kind of experience: you are watching it, then something happens on the show and you thing "Oh cool, they're doing that Super 8 thing here'. A few minutes later, something else happens and you thing "Oh here's that Silent Hill kinda thing, interesting!" And that happens way too often (all the time actually) and you start to realize that for every event in the show you catch the reference/inspiration source, you already know the overall its resolution (because they will wrap up events very similarly as done in the film/series/game that served their inspiration source), As consequence, Stranger Things becomes very predictable and does not build anything on its own, it does not develop its own identity as a story. After all episodes, all you've watched is a bucket of great ideas that were already marvelously executed in the past, and although it is great to see them all coordinated into a single piece of work, it is not as great as watching them from the source.

Modine's character needs some fleshing out, but the fact that he's in it at all makes it feel even more like an 80s throw-back (see: Private School, Vision Quest, etc.). It also has that real Breaking Away feel to it - the Indiana setting, the quarries. It inspired me to do something that makes others feel the way I felt about that show, to put it in simple terms. The music/soundtrack used songs that you felt to your core, this is especially true in Chapter 3 (Episode 3). The actors all fully embodied their characters to perfection. Not many actors in this show were well known and brought attention for their name (the only actor I recognized to be frank was Winona Ryder) but that was ok. The script and their acting was so impeccable that they did not need to have big names to attract viewers. The show always left you wanting more and rushing to make theories (which we all most likely got wrong). The cinematography was amazing and the characters were dynamic and static. Some characters changed as the story went through. Everything counted for the show was amazing and I'd like to thank everyone who put into it. If your purpose for reading this review is to help determine if you should watch STRANGER THINGS, then I tell you this: do you like media of 80s suburbia, monsters, Stephen King and Stephen Spielberg? Yes? There’s your answer. Go watch it. It’s only seven hours over eight episodes on Netflix. A splendid way to spend an open afternoon.

I was born in 1982. STRANGER THINGS is set in 1983. Its protagonists, style and world are not of my youth as directly experienced, but instead the nerdy youth I saw depicted on TV and the movies that repeated on cable channels. STRANGER THINGS could be one of those, with its story, production design and characters. It bleeds 1980s. It’s a horror FREAKS AND GEEKS. Look at that poster; reminiscent of Drew Struzan along with the awesome new covers for SHOUT/SCREAM Factory Collector’s editions) and its title font. Those alone tell you where the aim of the Duffer Brothers who created the show and wrote and/or directed most the episodes. STRANGER THINGS is a love letter to family friendly horror and science-fiction of Stephen Spielberg (mostly works he has produced) and even Stephen King who technically isn’t family friendly but still revered by youth. In fact, the only things to keep it from looking fully like a lost-classic-refound is the modern-style CGI of the monster and other supernatural elements (these elements being left vague by me purposely) and its length. That length is not a problem. The Netflix original has eight episodes, totaling around seven hours. This may be just the right length. If shortened to a 120 minute feature, it would be strong with decently well-drawn characters and well moving plot. With the extra five hours, it gives more time for the characters to develop and the many intersecting plotting groups to come together as they each solve different aspects of the mystery of the missing pre-teen geek Will Banks. It’s odd to look back and realize the full show was seven hours long because it doesn’t feel like it, not at all. This sucker moves. Character moments and arcs are given breathing room to develop well but does not feel like there is stalling or unnatural in moving across plot points too fast: how many times in films can you remember when a character suddenly has a revelation or other deus-ex-machina that exists just to push to the climax? With the excess time the plot threads can come together naturally. I won’t ruin here the ways those plots play out at all, leaving you to see how wonderful and clever (and often referential) they are.
Those several plot threads each contain their own sets of interconnecting characters, approaching the many mysteries and secrets of STRANGER THINGS from different angles. There is the nasty monster escaped from a shadowy government agency near the town, a psychic kid, other dimensions and other fantastical elements built around a grounded set of characters who lend heart to the story. Will’s mother is played by Winona Ryder in her best role since the 80s; her journey of searching, connecting with something (did I mention there is the possibility of a haunting too?), and trying to accept loss while not giving up on Will is heartbreaking and a true arc. There are times where she gets a little scenery chewing but usually gives a commanding performance, setting the pathos for the show. Joining her is the Small-Town-Sheriff ™, balancing the duties of his department and what he knows he needs to do. Will’s friends are all so well ripped from the 80s that I’m positive they were frozen in 1983 for the very purpose to make this show now. They ARE the quintessential 80s dorky-outcasts: bullied D&D players who love their science fiction and horror movies and TV and science itself. The characters and the actors are sincere: lovable but not twee. They provide many of the 70s and 80s reference drops as geeks like us tend to do (and cover their walls in now classic posters of THE THING – which does appear on screen and JAWS). The influences are on the sleeves of these kids. I want to particularly note Gaten Matarazzo as the adorkable Dusty, the most enthusiastic of the group, and Millie Bobbie Brown as Eleven, a young girl trying to figure herself out. Also along are Will’s older brother and one of Will’s friend’s sister who is looking for her own missing best friend.
As has been stated – STRANGER THINGS feels fully 80s. Huge love for the production and set designers create this world. The look of every home and more importantly, stuff in them from furniture (the Byer’s home coffee table…) to posters to the damned wood paneling, is ripped from my memories. I’m about ten years younger than the protagonists but it feels how I remember. The production design is top notch. This isn’t a parody or over-the-top 80s that pop-culture often latches to, but a true 80s.
    Finally, the music.

Great show. Exciting atmosphere. Lots of 80' flash back when you watch it... ET, Goonies, It, Explorers. Proper villains and great special effects (by Spectral Motion... actually the Demogorgon looks like some creatures you can see in Guillermo del Toro's movies). Hope they produce season 2.
    Don't miss it!

I don't quite agree with the opinions about 11 (Elle). I think she made the movie more intriguing, a tiny hero that fought the 'big guys', who was snatched from her mother at birth and never had a normal childhood or normal, close relationships, so much so that she did not understand the most basic concepts, like 'friend.' All she was to these morons, was a test-subject, with little regard for her humanity. No better like a laboratory rat in a cage in the days before people started protesting against pouring shampoo into the eyes of rabbits. Expand

I loved this show! I started watching it alone, at night, and I had to turn it off during the first episode because there were some scary scenes! But it's not all horror/scary. The story is really unique, and even though the ending kind of tied things up, the audience knows it's not over (whatever 'it' is). The cast was stellar: Ryder gives the best performance of her career. And I've always been a huge David Harbour fan. The cast of kids did a fine job. Usually, I find child actors to be annoying or to take away from the viewing experience (hello, Sons of Anarchy and Dexter). I really liked how the supporting cast members developed into more complicated roles. The girl who plays '11' is outstanding. She made everything work. I came away from this show with that good feeling you get with a show does some real world-building. The secondary stories of romance and school bullies worked well. Everything felt realistic, and with the 80s setting and music, I bought in, 100%. I really liked how the monster was shown only in glimpses for much of the show. It was effective and scary. I can't wait for next season! Expand

This is a great, short, and easily bingeable show. It could've gotten by on pure 80's nostalgia, but it went the extra mile to have a great cast of characters, a compelling story, and a great soundtrack. Would definitely recommend, especially to fans of Steven Spielberg and Stephen King.

Stop everything and watch this show right now. Yes, right this very moment. Do you want to feel nostalgic about 80's movies? Do you like good writing, talented actors, and a story line that makes you think and gets you to keep watching? Why are you reading this and not watching Stranger Things?!

this series is a little jewel, literally! I loved it, every single moment of it. I finished it in two days (which is almost impossible for me). Great writing and great story! The whole '80s vibe, ADORE. The children were GREAT they left me speechless. And Winona too! Great comeback! Highly recommend it, it became one of my faves within the first ten minutes!!

We've reached peak television. This show is mostly perfect.

It is a nostalgia fest of synthesized soundtrack and Spielberg kids on a Sci-Fi adventure in their backyard. There are a few slow bits but, in 8 hours of content, a few slow bits don't amount to much when there's this much to enjoy.

Brilliant TV Show. By far the best horror tv series I've seen. The characters are brilliant, the acting is simply spectacular (you would expect that from Winona Ryder, but every single actor does a marvelous job), interesting plot (this coming from someone that's not a big fan of horrors), and incredible directing. Top notch TV show, can't wait for Season 2.

75 by the critics? Totally underrated by critics... Just don't listen to them! It is powerful, it is marvellous, it is a masterpiece! If you are from the 80's like me or not it is impossible not to like the series, it is so refreshingly good that puts anything else aside... If you start watching it, you are not going to stop... I mean it!

Clearly inspired by the likes of Spielberg, Stephen King, and really any of the great minds behind the best sci-fi and horror of the 80's had to offer, Stranger Things is much more than just a good throwback. The thrills, chills, twists, and reveals just keep on coming.

One of the main things that works here is that it manages to fit in the human stories to go alongside the more abnormal events happening around these characters town. Every member of the cast is playing a real and complex character. One that is entirely believable. Occasionally their short-tempered ways of speaking to one another do get on your nerves, especially where the kids are concerned, but I still cared about everyone onscreen.

You don't have to be a child of the 80's or familiar with the movies, TV, and other forms of entertainment that inspired this show to enjoy the show. Those sort of things are just kind of an extra pat on the back. Things wrap up satisfyingly, but leave you with just enough questions to keep you coming back. This is just darn good TV and another win for Netflix originals.

One of Netflix’s best original series to date.

The music deserves a soundtrack and I am not talking the hits played, which must have cost a fortune, but the original score.

Shame this season had only 8 episodes.

I give it 10/10 not because it's a classic timeless series. I give it 10 because it is one of the most fun live action shows I've seen for quite some time and none of the problems I described lessen the overall experience.

There’s a higher bar for original stories--even homages--to clear when it comes to incorporating the lessons Hollywood has learned recently about depicting female characters who are as layered as their male counterparts. For all its charms, Stranger Things doesn’t quite meet that standard.
