Flawless. The acting is great, from everyone. The story is scary, emotional, hopeful, compelling. The writing is accurate and feels real. The music is fantastic and feels perfect for the times (80's). I thought The Night Of was good, then I watched this. The Night Of can't even touch Stranger Things.

The special effects (such as the monster) are not overdone to the point they become extremely unrealistic. I feel like the makers found the perfect balance for it all. The characters are interesting and brought to life with an amazing cast. There are also some scenes and small things from previous episodes that might seem pointless at the time, but later on you realise that they had a meaning and it all falls into place. Everything is well connected and the length of the first season is perfect. The show is fast paced and without "filler" episodes which is great. The last episode leaves you craving more. I'm looking forward to the next season.

After looking for their missing friend they come across a Girl ,who they call Eleven because of her tattoo. However they soon find out this isn’t any ordinary girl but one with very special powers. It is very clear the show takes lot of inspiration from classics 80’s films like The goonies and ET.

The performances from all of the cast are great especially the child actors ,who show the right amount of charisma and banter you aspect from kids growing up in the 80’s. However, the star of the show here is definitely Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) who plays the ET type of role in show. Millie’s brilliant acting skills have a lasting effect on the viewer even though she has 42 words throughout the whole series.

The Duffer Brothers brilliant writing and directing skills play with your emotions to create a love letter to all those 80’s horror films. Its truly something special!

Child actors can make or break a show, and the actors in Stranger Things knocked it out of the park. The writing, story, and originality was phenomenal, the writing was also very emotional touching, heartbreaking, and impactful. The humor was hilarious, super natural feeling, and it really fit into the story perfectly. Stranger Things conveys the flair of the 80s very well. In addition, this is then linked with foreign monsters. Everything seems very mysterious, which makes the show even better.

To now come to the acting performance in Stranger Things: The acting performance is perfect. The characters Eleven, Dustin, Mike, Lucas and Will are played by five teenagers. Because they are still kids in real life, they can put themselves into the roles very well. This is noticeable in every episode. Over time, the characters really grow on you. You start to love them.

Story: The story in Stranger Things is highly interesting and exciting. I was never bored watching the show, because the story fascinated me very much. There's nothing like a "Filler-Episode" (which only extends the length of the series and doesn't really contribute to the story) in Stranger Things. Every single episode contributes to the plot. It always remains thrilling. And because the series follows a "thread", the addiction potential is very high. You just always want to know how it goes on.

Effects/Animations: The effects and animations in Stranger Things are wonderful. They look very good and everything is displayed really well. You can put yourself into the series even better. The "monsters" in the series are also very well animated. This made them very scary.

Conclusion: The series is perfect. Stranger Things is definitely one of my favourite series and I can definitely recommend it to anyone. The series is not creepy (which it doesn't want to be either), but very exciting in every episode. In my opinion it's a show you have to see. Full recommendation to watch!

What a great show! The few minor flaws are completely overshadowed by the abundance of greatness. At one point, it felt a lot like Videodrome - and if you've seen Videodrome, you'll know what I mean. Modine's character needs some fleshing out, but the fact that he's in it at all makes it feel even more like an 80s throw-back (see: Private School, Vision Quest, etc.). It also has that real Breaking Away feel to it - the Indiana setting, the quarries. Sure, the camera angles and the way many of the shots are set up are reminiscent of Spielberg - especially the way "11" is integrated into the story - but it feels more like an homage than a rip-off. Looking forward to finishing it off. Expand

The thrills, chills, twists, and reveals just keep on coming.

One of the main things that works here is that it manages to fit in the human stories to go alongside the more abnormal events happening around these characters town. Every member of the cast is playing a real and complex character. One that is entirely believable. Occasionally their short-tempered ways of speaking to one another do get on your nerves, especially where the kids are concerned, but I still cared about everyone onscreen.

You don't have to be a child of the 80's or familiar with the movies, TV, and other forms of entertainment that inspired this show to enjoy the show. Those sort of things are just kind of an extra pat on the back. Things wrap up satisfyingly, but leave you with just enough questions to keep you coming back. This is just darn good TV and another win for Netflix originals.

As a child of the 80's, I love the vibe and references. The group of young friends on an adventure, The monster Thriller, High school antics, and paranormal action. This is the most fun I 've had watching a TV show since Daredevil season 1. My favorite part is the show begins and end's with a D&D adventure.

It's Stephen King's Freaks and Geeks.

The show presents a wonderful blend of Spielbergian storytelling, synth-infused 80's nostalgia, King-flavoured horror and modern directorial flare. It is beautiful and compelling, full of likable characters, and as fun as it is frightening. Highly recommended.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So the show is very good (I just binge watched the whole thing), but...

That monster is seriously low quality. It's not even frightening because it is such low quality - both the low budget cgi look and the 'character/spirit/soul/art' of the thing. It reminds me of a low budget Resident Evil monster. Aliens - now _that_ is a monster!

Also I don't appreciate them ripping stuff off (aka 'paying homage', aka 'fan service'), it takes you out of the immersion.

And the rules of the upside-down don't make any sense. If this monster is flesh and needs to eat (and breed) then what has it been eating in the upside-down... if the creature is as presented then there should be an army of them and an ecosystem of other creatures. Also the upside-down had to have become a copy of the real world at a fixed point in the past (which isn't compatible with the 'monster as animal' narrative), because it's not a continuous copy of the inanimate real world (without people) because the inanimate real world things in it can be changed without changing the real world. A parallel universe inhabited by people that was invaded by monsters isn't possible either because that world would have diverged significantly over the invasion and subsequent fighting. The upside-down is presented as a mash-up of bad dreams where nothing needs to make sense... and ends up not being scary or immersive because it's not believable to the thinking awake viewer.

Also it's good that they mention MKUltra... maybe some people will look it up after watching the show. But they presented a greatly toned down version of it compared to the real thing - isn't fiction suppose to exaggerate reality? Since when do you tone it down? When the reality is so horrible that people would avert their eyes to preserve their comfortable illusions (costing the show makers money). MKUltra wasn't just the US government feeding _volunteers_ LSD... it was experiments conducted on unwilling Americans and Canadians by both countries that ran until they were dead or driven insane.

Not only was I pleasantly surprised by the well-conceived narrative, but I found myself actively engaged in spotting all the cinematic references in this series.

The most obvious is Spielberg. It's kind of a Goonies meet Poltergeist on the surface, but the Duffer Brothers also dig deep into fantasy novels, games, comic books and music of that era to create a wonderful facsimile of the early 80s.. The kids steal the show. It is a casting director's dream to find such young previously unheard talent. The four boys come together as effortlessly as Carl Reiner's lads from Stand By Me. Add in their passion for Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings, and you can't help but be swept away by this series.

My only real disappointment was Winona Ryder. She was a great casting call, given her late 80s pedigree, but her voice is irritating beyond belief. I don't know if this is what she sounds like now or this was what she felt a distraught mother sounds like, but it is like scratching a chalkboard. She has her moments, like stringing up all the Christmas lights to communicate with her lost son, but for the most part she is insufferable to watch.

David Harbour is excellent as a sheriff who found a small town to hide out in, thinking nothing bad could possibly happen here. Unfortunately for him, he runs up against the worst sort of evil that turns your world literally upside down. While the kids carry most of the load, Sheriff Hopper keeps this narrative grounded. His initial distance and ultimately his total commitment provide just the right balance to a series of unfortunate events spinning wildly out of control.

I am also glad the Duffer Brothers didn't take themselves too seriously. Gaten Matarazzo has the best lines and makes the most of them. Hard to believe he had only one television appearance before this. He becomes the de facto leader of the group, largely thanks to his ability to keep things in perspective thanks to his robust knowledge of the fantasy world and his ability to quickly assimilate scientific principles. His phone call with the science teacher was priceless.

Millie Brown is probably the most seasoned young actor, but oddly distant in her role as Eleven.. As my daughter pointed out, you don't feel as much for her as you feel you should, but that is in large part because she remains an "alien force," or wierdo, as Dustin calls her. She reminded me a bit of Saoirse Ronan in Hanna.

Taken as a whole, Strangers Things comes together nicely. The ending could have been a bit stronger, but I assume we will learn more in the second season, once the folks at Neflix have let the show "breathe a little bit."

This is what the people want Netflix. If you can continue to replicate shows like this then people will cancel their ridiculously expensive cable subscriptions. Everything is top notch in this 8 episode bingeworthy series. The only reason I gave it a 9 instead of a 10 is for the predictability of the last 2 episodes and the acting is great but not 10/10.

I'm gonna try to avoid spoilers in this review in case anyone hasn't seen it.

So, first off, the quality. If you are well-versed in the cinema of the 1980's or literature of the 1980's then it's very clear to you that this show was inspired by Stephen King's early novels and Stephen Spielberg's early films. And if you're a fan of these things, which I am, then this will obviously be a plus for you. I am instantly hooked on this show just by the way it looks. It's obvious that the duffer brothers are fans of this source material because everything from the opening logo, which looks just like Stephen Kin's font for his earliest books to mini-plot elements sharing themes to Spielberg's movies as well as Stephen King's books.

The main hook of this show is the disappearance of this boy and his mother trying to search for him, played by Winona Ryder, very well I might add. A police chief, played by David Harbour, whose downward character progression really hooked me into this show. I thought David Harbour was great in this and his character was amazing. Also great characters were the three kids searching for their missing friend. These kids were gold, they were funny, likeable and actually acted like kids! Also the older brother of Will, played by Charlie Heaton was excellent because he was kind of the reserved character, the loner. Also, Winona Ryder's character, who starts to go insane, at least to most people.

Is it perfect, almost, but it has faults and as much as I want to give it a 10, I can't. Also, there are some striking resemblances to E.T.

If your purpose for reading this review is to help determine if you should watch STRANGER THINGS, then I tell you this: do you like media of 80s suburbia, monsters, Stephen King and Stephen Spielberg? Yes? There’s your answer. Go watch it. It’s only seven hours over eight episodes on Netflix. A splendid way to spend an open afternoon.

I was born in 1982. STRANGER THINGS is set in 1983. Its protagonists, style and world are not of my youth as directly experienced, but instead the nerdy youth I saw depicted on TV and the movies that repeated on cable channels. STRANGER THINGS could be one of those, with its story, production design and characters. It bleeds 1980s. It’s a horror FREAKS AND GEEKS. Look at that poster; reminiscent of Drew Struzan along with the awesome new covers for SHOUT/SCREAM Factory Collector’s editions) and its title font. Those alone tell you where the aim of the Duffer Brothers who created the show and wrote and/or directed most the episodes. STRANGER THINGS is a love letter to family friendly horror and science-fiction of Stephen Spielberg (mostly works he has produced) and even Stephen King who technically isn’t family friendly but still revered by youth. In fact, the only things to keep it from looking fully like a lost-classic-refound is the modern-style CGI of the monster and other supernatural elements (these elements being left vague by me purposely) and its length. That length is not a problem. The Netflix original has eight episodes, totaling around seven hours. This may be just the right length. If shortened to a 120 minute feature, it would be strong with decently well-drawn characters and well moving plot. With the extra five hours, it gives more time for the characters to develop and the many intersecting plotting groups to come together as they each solve different aspects of the mystery of the missing pre-teen geek Will Banks. It’s odd to look back and realize the full show was seven hours long because it doesn’t feel like it, not at all. This sucker moves. Character moments and arcs are given breathing room to develop well but does not feel like there is stalling or unnatural in moving across plot points too fast: how many times in films can you remember when a character suddenly has a revelation or other deus-ex-machina that exists just to push to the climax? With the excess time the plot threads can come together naturally. I won’t ruin here the ways those plots play out at all, leaving you to see how wonderful and clever (and often referential) they are.
Those several plot threads each contain their own sets of interconnecting characters, approaching the many mysteries and secrets of STRANGER THINGS from different angles. There is the nasty monster escaped from a shadowy government agency near the town, a psychic kid, other dimensions and other fantastical elements built around a grounded set of characters who lend heart to the story. Will’s mother is played by Winona Ryder in her best role since the 80s; her journey of searching, connecting with something (did I mention there is the possibility of a haunting too?), and trying to accept loss while not giving up on Will is heartbreaking and a true arc. There are times where she gets a little scenery chewing but usually gives a commanding performance, setting the pathos for the show. Joining her is the Small-Town-Sheriff ™, balancing the duties of his department and what he knows he needs to do. Will’s friends are all so well ripped from the 80s that I’m positive they were frozen in 1983 for the very purpose to make this show now. They ARE the quintessential 80s dorky-outcasts: bullied D&D players who love their science fiction and horror movies and TV and science itself. The characters and the actors are sincere: lovable but not twee. They provide many of the 70s and 80s reference drops as geeks like us tend to do (and cover their walls in now classic posters of THE THING – which does appear on screen and JAWS). The influences are on the sleeves of these kids. I want to particularly note Gaten Matarazzo as the adorkable Dusty, the most enthusiastic of the group, and Millie Bobbie Brown as Eleven, a young girl trying to figure herself out. Also along are Will’s older brother and one of Will’s friend’s sister who is looking for her own missing best friend.
As has been stated – STRANGER THINGS feels fully 80s. Huge love for the production and set designers create this world. The look of every home and more importantly, stuff in them from furniture (the Byer’s home coffee table…) to posters to the damned wood paneling, is ripped from my memories. I’m about ten years younger than the protagonists but it feels how I remember. The production design is top notch. This isn’t a parody or over-the-top 80s that pop-culture often latches to, but a true 80s.
    Finally, the music.

If you are looking for horror, monsters, great 80s homages, amazing acting, directing and writing be sure to watch The Duffer brothers' TV series debut, Stranger Things. Due to great internet popularity(and overall greatness!), we can already call it an instant cult classic.

The series, which gets its inspiration from 80s fantasy and horror film(and book) hitmakers like John Carpenter, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Stephen King is set in a fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. On the surface, the premise seems simple(ish) and quite familiar. A group of young friends battle a big monster, which is a result of conspiracy-like military experiments. But the show is much much more.

Stranger Things starts immediately, with the cold open. It features series' main plot device - mysterious disappearance of Will Byers. Ever since then, the story has been fast moving, interesting, but at the same time just enough careful to explore the characters(and their development). It follows different people, whose storylines become combined in the end.

The show benefits from great performances. On the one hand, we have an experienced, older cast members(Winona Ryder's performance as a single mother who is trying(despite everyone and everything against her) her best to find her missing son is deep and equally amusing, David Harbour is there as a anti-pole to Ryder's character, as a warm, but calm police chief) and on the other, we have less-experienced cast, who all gave a moving and original performances(especially Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, whose chemistry is special, to say the least)
    .
Though not renewed(yet)-I wonder what would the show do for its sophomore season. It left itself an open door to continue the same story, on the other hand, the Hawkins storyline seems to be(at least for now) concluded.

However, that does not really matter. Stranger Things is more than just a great refreshing summer watch, its a deep and meaningful series, which deserves wide(r) recognition

The best thing Netflix has ever put out, starring some of the best child actors. A few moments of predictability here and there (especially if you've seen ET), but overall this show is great. Fine history, perfectly given plot and good acting. Excellent story about friendship of teenagers and eccentric woman. Action looks live and captures literally you. It is impossible to come off. Perhaps the best series of Netflix in 2016.

I am a 15-year-old teenager and had no idea on how the TV shows were in the 80's, and this show got me totally into it. The complete cast has done a very good job in acting their characters where each of them has his own background story, that is telled so detailed that you can really comprehend each decision anyone is making; the music fits the scenes and their atmospheres very well and goes from 80's Rock to stunning and thrilling synthie-sounds; the animations and effects are on a very high level and the plot is mysterious and supernatural in a way that it entertains but stays realistic.
At some few moments it's a bit too much a cheesy and cliched 80's-Lovestory, but I think that's only my subjective opinion.
So all in all 'Stranger Things' is a sci-fi-fantasy-drama that everyone loving the sci-fi-classics of the 80's or being a fan of high-level-produced mystery-/fantasy-thriller should watch.

Not perfect and not likely to win awards, but it is well-crafted, thrilling, and really does take you back to feel the nostalgia of the 80's classic vibe really well. There are quality chilling moments. In addition to the obvious films/series it pulls from I also feel it is reminiscent of both the more recent excellent film, Midnight Special, and a really great cult-favorite film from only a few years ago called Beyond The Black Rainbow (the film was more artsy and not mainstream at all, but there are similar elements. BTBR is incredible if you can suss out the story on your own instead of being spoonfed). Some of the acting is a bit over-the-top and occasionally unintentionally funny, but I can overlook those flaws. For the most part the series has had me eager to watch all eight episodes as quickly as possible. It doesn't feel like a rip-off. It does feel like a loving echo of past classics pulled together in mosaic respect. As of now, my only feeling is that it doesn't necessarily offer much we haven't seen before, but offers it to us in an exciting, vintage fashion. I am about to press play on the final episode. This has been a fun rollercoaster ride. I am hoping for a second season. The creators, etc have already stated that season 2 will be more of a sequel cousin than a direct continuation of Season 1. We shall see. One strength is that there aren't alot of big name actors/actresses here so it really lends to the feeling of this being everyday folks experiencing an usual disturbance in their small town. It is a very good science fiction tv show, it has a lot but a lot of references to the 80's and it's good because it's a good adaptation to that time, the kids do an amazing job, the adults also do a great job with their co-protagonist, is a really good job worthy of a 10 but it has some fails, sometimes the story is not very clear but it's well narrate Expand

Mucha gente esperaba muchas referencias

It could be said it is a well done mix of all the pop culture we loved in the 80´s. But for me is far more than that. The acting, the visuals, the music, the story, this is a well crafted creative effort made by the rising stars, The Duffer Brothers. Netflix's best original series by a whole lot. Powerful. Stunning. Thrilling.

What is there to hate about Stranger Things? I mean sure there are plot holes, some bad jokes, Episode 7 of Season 2, but besides that, I have no idea. The child acting plus the amazing FX just make it perfect.

    Awesome first season

Stranger things is a series that i personally think it could control my feelings the way it wanted. It could make me excited , happy , sad, etc . And it never was boring to me , i mean , it is entertaining every moment . It also has one of the most powerful stories. Just perfect.

This film noir portrait of corruption and morally-compromised obsessions stars Welles as Hank Quinlan, a crooked police chief who frames a Mexican youth as part of an intricate criminal plot. Charlton Heston plays an honorable Mexican narcotics investigator who clashes with the bigoted Quinlan after probing into his dark past. A memorable

Stranger Things season 1 has no sense of direction, which is what one might think at once. While that may sound as a negative, it looks like a positive to me. The audience knows absolutely nothing about what is going to happen, until it is revealed and they are full of shock. Packed with emotion and most importantly, mystery, Stranger Things Season 1 is the epitome of mystery TV at its finest.

This is astoundingly efficient storytelling, eight hours that pass in a blink, with even minor characters getting sharp dialogue, dark humor, or moments of pathos.

There’s a higher bar for original stories--even homages--to clear when it comes to incorporating the lessons Hollywood has learned recently about depicting female characters who are as layered as their male counterparts. For all its charms, Stranger Things doesn’t quite meet that standard.
