The movie is a decent love letter to the previous seasons, hammering home how far each of the characters have changed. The songs; as always, are catchy with some real hits that wouldn't be out of place on conventional radio. The songs; as always, are catchy with some real hits that wouldn't be out of place on conventional radio. The animation, on the main villain was quite good, you can tell the animators took advantage of a higher budget to have fun with her movement, with the rest looking more or less what we've come to expect from a standard episode.

However, if you were unsatisfied with the last season finale and was hoping the movie would flesh out the diamonds, you will still be disappointed. You may also feel like there is little point to the movie as much of it is retreaded familiar ground with regards to character arcs. All in all it's a fun enough romp for the fans of the show, it just doesn't do much in terms of plot or character.

Steven Universe: The Movie takes place after the finale of the TV series and it's what you would expect. It's more Steven Universe. Also, the villain is great.

If you liked the TV show, you will definitely like this movie.

Steven Universe: The Movie, a rollicking musical, revisits tried-and-true themes, like the power of love and friendship, finding strength in our ability to show empathy, and dealing with the past. This continuation, however, also explores the value in self-preservation and finding boundaries.

Pearl’s hard-won independence, Amethyst’s willingness to play nice with others, Garnet’s fierce belief in love, and Steven’s maturity all get moving spotlights, and catchy-as-hell musical numbers besides. It can feel repetitive; the show has already thoroughly explored all of these areas, and the format of “a surprise attack from an unknown gem rival with an unknown connection to our heroes” is one that “Steven Universe” has leaned on again and again. Yet it’s hard to be too annoyed by this fact, especially when Steven explicitly acknowledges it at the movie’s most climactic moment.
