You can laugh about ’The Clone Wars’, but only with ’Rebels’.

Our fan-friendly flick doesn't stop being so much more than a show for kids. Brand new storylines are slowly being built up and it’s a great ride of the classic SW-feel and, in comparison, much more intense and high-paced than S01. The non-stop adventures of Ezra & Kanan are good as always, even though the fascinating character-depth that made the first entry so great, has greatly decreased. The focus of this second season is on brand new stories, like for example; the friendship between a clone and a jedi. That’s highly original thinking! The childish aspects are not that noticeable, the humor can even be hilariously great, and it still is an animation! The show still lacks a more unique feel to the plot & the characters, and it desperately need less amount of expositions! Sure there are some less interesting episodes, but still; Star Wars Rebels continues to impress and follows what the original films gave us, even though it kind of mock them in a fan-positive way. And wow, what a stunning season finale!

The big problem for me, is that there is little detail beyond Ezra, and the predictable plots his gang get embroiled in. It lacks the expansive feel of star wars. Every scene is either in a ship or similar looking hangar, or the one planet (Lothal) where, for some reason, every plot it centred around. Different planets an factions were a regular in the clone, but the animators seem to be avoiding such a workload. Prime examples; space battle usually involve no more than 5 ships (will admit that the lack of war means less ships), a scene where they do run through a market not on Lothal and yet citizens on this world must be invisible, and in season 1 ("Out of Darkness") there is a season where they literally copy an animation during a fight (look out for it when Hera and Sabine are on their ship fighting off the creatures).

But, a little better in season 2. Helps that the fate of the characters are unknown.

Season 2 is an improvement. Now that the sparks have ignited the fire of rebellion against the Empire it will become an even harder fight. TheSeason 2 is an improvement. Now that the sparks have ignited the fire of rebellion against the Empire it will become an even harder fight. The Empire will do everything to extinguish these flames. This season has less weaker episodes, does a lot of good fan service and has a great overall story arc that leads to an epic final. Also we got some good character development for our main cast and some familiar faces made an appearance. To be more specific a lot of Clone Wars characters are becoming part of the cast and those add a lot to the enjoyment (Wont go into details to avoid spoilers). Lets go to my favourite episodes: “The Siege of Lothal part 1 and 2” starts the new status quo as the Empire sends their most feared enforcer to crush the rebels. Everything else from before is now was just a minor inconvenience. “The lost Commanders” and “Relics of the Old Republic” adds nostalgia to the show and brings in a fan favourite. Also quite a good tactical battle and quite a humorous game of fishing;-). “Brother of the Broken Horn” is a game of scoundrels, enjoyable and a welcome change of pace. “Blood Sisters” shows finally some of Sabine’s past and introduce a new interesting characters in form of Ketsu. “A Princess on Lothal” title alone is already a spoiler so I say a well done guest appearance and nice plot to archive the mutual goals. “Homecoming” is Hera’s episode and we get more of her backstory. It has an excellent and immersive storyline and (a bit foreseeable twists) atop on good character development. “The Honourable Ones” is Zeb’s and Agent Kallus episode and one of my favourites. It might be a bit stereotypical but flashes out the characters. “The forgotten Droid” is on my list because of AP-5 the mentioned droid. Won me over instantly and he and Chopper work well together. Finally we have season finale “Twilight of the Apprentice part 1 and 2”. This is an epic climax with impacts for the show and characters. The confrontation is set up during the whole season but there will be far more to it. Great story, good twist and a challenge for our characters. Also bonus for a familiar face returning. Overall this is a good improvement. While season 1 had more weaker episode this has nearly no clear weaknesses except the a bit cheesy “Legends of Lasat” and even that has some redeeming qualities. However there is a difference between good and awesome episodes. It does not reach the levels of the best Clone Wars seasons so I think a 8/10 is fair. Would still recommend to watch this as it might sound too negative and for some people anything below a 9/10 is utter garbage (Never understood this point of view). Full Review »
