I get that its supposed to be a kids show, but its freaking star wars. We grew up watching the live-action movies as little kids. This is honestly the goddamn backyardigans with lightsabers, even the computer animation has been softened up. It sucks this show is canon, huge disappointment. Maybe those that cant sit through the brain dead fluff fest that is Rebels will get a grittier novel or something. Have we forgotten that we grew up with violent cartoons? Batman beyond, Dragon Ball z, Transformers, Thundercats, He-man. People bleed, and people die, I have no honest idea why they made this cartoon just so damn weak! Expand

Sadly exclusively suited for kids aging 9 and below, Disney Cancer Wars stroke again. It's a disgrace TCW had to die for this, which was a very very solid show after the first two seasons.

The show, while not horrible, is very boring in my opinion. The characters aren't original, and are just rip offs from the original three movies. You got your wise Jedi teacher the young student who is just introduced to the force, and the crew that becomes his family. The show will try to bring in guess stars like R2 and Lando Carrissian, but this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. TheThe show, while not horrible, is very boring in my opinion. They're ruthless, don't except incompetence, and the inquisitor is by far the best character in the show. The 1st season had about 3 good episodes out of ten where I wasn't annoyed with the characters and the plot. Not horrible, but needs to improve greatly for me to continue watching. Expand

It doesn't request much attention, though you may once in a while be attracted to it's cute but simplistic graphics.
Honestly, if you've got nothing better to watch, why not ?

The main gripe I have with 'Rebels' is the complete murder of any sort of 'tone' or 'mood' established in 'The Clone Wars' which proved a success with both Children and Adults. 'Rebels' made a point of Injecting 'Disney' into the Star Wars franchise, You always knew Esra and his crew would make it out in the end, there'd be sparing character development, maybe something to lead onto another episode, but it all felt very... cookie-cutter.
    To sum it up:
Esra and co. steal something -> Something goes wrong -> Imperials turn up -> Esra and co. escape in the most Cliche way you can Imagine.
I know Disney has a reputation of appealing more to children in it's animated features / shows but the ignorance to 'Clone Wars' really felt like a missed opportunity.
    *SPOILERS*
Comparing an episode from both series, Episode one of 'Star wars: Rebels' shows the Merry band of rebels recruiting a young Esra and taking him under their wing as a budding Jedi in an effort to locate and rescue a bunch of Wookie prisoners, Although the characters make some very... strange logic calls in the episode (Imperial Commander choosing to shoot at the armed Jedi [Who he has seen deflect Blaster bolts with ease.] Instead of the defenseless Esra and wookie. Then having his blaster bolt reflected back at him. ) The episode follows through in a very 'Disney-esque' way with the heroes coming out on top with zero repercussions, leaving the bad guy stranded on the edge of a mining platform with a lippy storm-trooper. Horray, Happy ending, ( This trend is pretty much constant throughout the first season.)

In comparison I'll draw to one of the first episodes of 'The Clone Wars' I had ever seen, aptly named 'Rookies', In which a group of 'not-too-concerned about the war' clone troopers are stationed on a remote listening post that comes under attack from droid commandos, The episode ultimately ends in a rather sad way, with one of the troopers sacrificing his life to blow up the Station and all of the droids with it, even with a rather bad-ass one-liner.

Although sad, this is something I respected immensely from lucas-arts, the ability to confront the death of likeable characters, The continued a trend of realism throughout the show, Not painting the 'Seperatists' or 'Empire' in Rebels as stereotypical 'moustache-twirling' villains. The fact that perspective often changed between many different protagonists and even factions gave the show new breath when one arc seemed to loose it's steam, ( I can recall an entire arc devoted solely to Bounty-hunters! )
Whereas Rebels sticks to the same crew of six, the same villains, the same 'Poster people' of the Star-wars franchise, Rebels just seemed afraid to explore the lore of Star wars, voting to rather stick to it's cookie-cutter disney routine of "Good vs Evil, Good wins, Evil is back next week."

Disney must realize at some point that adults and children alike would do well to have a bit of morality to their 'Star wars' experience instead of the usual 'Good versus Evil' forumla, 'Clone wars' had the same formula granted, but it was put in a far more 'Digestible' form, with both sides having an impressive amount of depth.

My 11 year old nephew came from 'Clone wars' to 'Rebels' and frankly found it insulting how 'condescending' disney had decided to make Rebels.

Overall Disney has disappointed me in this latest dive into the animated world of 'Star wars' and I sincerely hope 'Rebels' takes a more mature spin in it's future seasons, developing new characters and adding to it's tiny rogues gallery / hero selection.

I tried, I couldn't. It's so mindlessly dumbed down that I can't watch it. THE MAIN CHARACTER IS ALADDIN (i'm not being racist, the point is the next sentence). The voice acting is overly cartoonish and goofy; the females sound like their talking to toddlers, cooing almost. The dialogue is as mindless as a Disney straight-to-dvd sequel. This isn't fitting for a huge universe like Star Wars. If you have to make this series so childish, how can you expect them to enjoy the films?! That is assuming the new films fit JJ's resume. If my enjoyment of the sequel trilogy rides on my knowledge of Rebels, that's just unfair. If you're still curious to watch it, please do. If this was the only thing that existed in Star Wars other than the films, I might give it a 5. When Disney asks me to choose between this and the likes of Heir to the Empire, Dark Forces, Shadows of the Empire, The New Jedi Order, and the hundreds of other novels, games, comics, etc. I've bought from the Star Wars EU over the years, I'll choose the latter every time, and this gets a 0 in comparison. Kids will love the show for its simplistic action, relatable protagonist, and of course, lightsabers and the Force. Adults looking for more mature themes, nuanced story, philosophical exposition, will find this show, like its Clone Wars predecessor, a massive disappointment. I'll stick to the non-YA books.

At the start of Season 1 the total viewers dropped from 3million down to remain at ~500,000. This is compared to a consistent 5million for The Clone Wars.
Season 1 is of zero consequence for the star wars universe, with which they have very little interaction. This is possibly the intention, as its based on a formula:
Ezra - The protagonist. Ezra is an utterly empty character.

Ezra - The protagonist. Ezra is an utterly empty character. Everything he says and does is simply reactive to events. With a stereotypically childish slingshot. Depth? Later he cuts his hair and grows 3 feet.

Zeb - "The muscle of the group. He's great at smashing things, including things he doesn't mean to smash."

Sabine - "The artistic one". She draws and has dyed hair that changes every season. Her stereotype is aggression. Shes a walking appeal to feminine emancipation (the disneyization kind).

Hera - Motherly character who always does the ethical thing and tells people what to do.

Kanan - Apparently a Jedi master without a backbone. Doesnt have anything wise to say other than typical jedi stuff. He gives in to Ezra most of the time, as they can't let a stroppy parental figure get in the way of the young viewers wishes. They later attempt to add some depth to him by removing his eyes.

Season 2 gets a little more interesting when some characters from the previous series/movies turn up.
I really hope this series doesnt infect the movies.

Featuring cameos from Bail Organa, Lando, Yoda and Darth Vader, the show really picks up towards the end of the season, when Grand Moff, Wilhuff Tarkin shows up to deal with the Rebels and consequences finally come to bear on them. Stephen Stanton voices Tarkin and does a fantastic job of evoking Peter Cushing's heartless, chilling portrayal.

The animation is beautifully clear with a subdued colour palete, very in keeping with the original trilogy, the characters are likeable and well acted and the music, by Kevin Kiner, mixes just the right amount of iconic themes in with new pieces. All in all, a great start to, hopefully, a fantastic ongoing show.

It shouldn't be compared to TWC, and after watching the first 5 episodes of this first season, I now understand that. Both children and adults alike will enjoy. They retained the adventurous Star Wars feel, with still keeping it child friendly for a TV-Y7 rating (and believe me, it doesn't get in the way of some deaths, in fact more deaths than I would have thought before seeing it). I'm glad that this is a alternative for the children who's parents wouldn't let them see The Clone Wars, due to its violence and even sometimes, gore.

I have a few nitpicks about rebels, but the first season of TWC was WAY more rocky than this season. In fact, it's 2x the better start of a season than TWC was. I thought I wouldn't return after the first few episodes, but after watching it, I'm certain I'll keep watching every week as long as they retain this more light hearted adventurous - but serious, alternative to the animated Star Wars series most Star Wars fans adored.

I very much look forward to watching Ezra become a Jedi under Kanan's tutelage. You can already tell what a dangerous choice it is to train him (Kanan never actually becoming a Knight and Ezra being headstrong, impatient, and frustrated) and I'm sure some seriously awesome adventure will ensue with that arc while they take on Palpatine's new born empire.

'Star Wars Rebels' is the show for the fanboys. There haven't been a show like this one before, that really respects the original material of the films. Add fascinating references and humor to the plot and you got real entertainment like this one! It's a funny ride into the galaxy far, far away, and it's much different to 'The Clone Wars'. We see human connection, humor, understanding and real feel for them. They interact in a natural and clever way that's never forced nor bad. Attachment and likability is a present thing only after a few episodes! The plot often got a real purpose, and to follow these characters against the evil empire and at the same time getting stronger against them is a fun thing to do.

Many deep characteristic moments are a present thing in Rebels, especially between the character Kanan and Ezra, who often fight against their past and the want-to of the dark side of the force. Our main characters are wonderful, both from a personal and critical point of view. The villain however, does not have that much depth nor feel to him. Sure he's very menacing what a protagonist should be like, but I want more fear and depth to him in the future! The way 'Star Wars Rebels' was made is extraordinary. The animation is very good for a tv-show, and there's even some very good camerawork and splendid visuals here and there. My biggest complains however must be on the show itself. It's very flawless, but it still could have been much more. Take the action for example; it's not that unique nor mind-blowing. The plot might be too simple too, it's not something advanced. 'Star Wars Rebels' need a more nuanced and complex story. Sure, it's primarely a show made for kids, but I still think it can improve to the better! A secondary "flaw" might be the dialogs; which are incredible in comparison with what 'The Clone Wars' had. But it sometimes can feel a bit too forced, especially in situations where characters have exposition-reveals through their dialogs. Some lines are unnecessary too, even for a tv-show for kids. But other than that is 'Star Wars Rebels' really a great show that really is funny and entertaining for kids as adults, and that really got the original feel of Star Wars.

The movie also incorporates the ingenious writing that the films have incorporated without having to rip off the dialogue of the original or prequels, although there is one moment when they borrow one of the most famous line from the original film to incorporate what the Force actually is, but it plays it so smoothly, you barely even notice it unless you listen carefully. While the film incorporates the weight, and the style perfectly well, it doesn't incorporate the same pacing as the films. Given that this is only a 44 minute long movie, it show that its structure isn't too perfectly pieced together, and at times, it feels a little bit rushed even in times that are crucial to the film. However, even with its slightly clunky pacing, the film lasts longer than 44 minutes, as it keeps you perfectly entertained throughout the entirety of the movie, so well that you forget that this movie is shorter than it is, something that I've never seen many movies do before.

To anyone who's skeptical about Disney's take into the Star Wars Canon, this movie has everything perfectly fitted for everyone, kiddies, teens, adults, fans, non fans, family, it has everything for everyone without falling to any dumb little tropes that many people associate Disney with, which is completely unfair and untrue given Disney's track record with its classic and even recently its modern animation. Overall, Star Wars Rebels: The Spark of Rebellion is a wonderfully crafted movie, more than well-deserving of having its place in the Star Wars timeline. Given that the film and the show was made by Dave Filoni, who also worked with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and also directed a few episodes of Avatar The Last Airbender, its obvious that this movie and its show are in great hands, and I'm very excited for the beginning of the show which I have purchased the seasons pass on iTunes for. The movie had some occasional clunky pacing, but the writing, animation, characters and story give this movie and its show a perfect start into a new story in the Star Wars saga.

Overall Rating: 9 out of 10!

I think they do a good job with this series, I'd still give it a higher rating for children though as some children might find it a little overwhelming for their still undeveloped brains...At least they have moral values unlike most programs on TV today...Violence breeds violence Hate begets Hatred this leads to war's...
Don't we have enough of that in our present world today?

It's one of my go to shows to keep my head in the stars. I'm a big sci-if fan and this has a lot of what I like. Ships, blaster and especially droids and mandolorian armor. Keep it up.

The season finale includes a great surprise.

The second season is incredibly satisfying as it deals with resolving many of the arcs, previously started in ''The Clone Wars'' including the return of many fan favorites from the former show, the Season Finale is a show changer, and probably the highlight of the show so far. And promises a darker 3rd Season.

The 3rd Season includes the long awaited return of a Fan Favorite, from the classic ''Legends'' books.

The only minor complaint is that it seems to show less violence than ''The Clone Wars''. There's man guest characters reprising their roles from the Saga but I didn't mention them due to the spolierific nature.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rebels tried to follow The Clone Wars steps, but it has failed. Not entirely, I think they've developed good characters and story-lines, but they've failed in some aspects. The Jedi never kill anyone in the series. The only "murder" is done at stormtroopers with blasters, they don't kill anyone with the lighsabers. Even when Darth Maul kills one of the Inquisitors, Disney censured the scene. Rebels is made for children, and you, as an adult cannot have further involvement with it. It tries to pass a moral lesson in the 2nd season's last episodes, but it failed miserably. But, Rebels is good and nothing is going to change that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (This review may be lengthy but worth the read as to advertise my distaste for this show)
How come so many people love this show? I will literally list the countless problems with it below:

Biggest issue: They need to stop marketing this show towards adults. It is so obviously exclusively for little kids. They add things like Thrawn and Season trailers, things kids dont even know about. I wouldnt have a problem with this show if they just marketed it for little kids but i guess they think its a "sequel to Clone wars"...

Concept art; It ends up being ruined by cringey animation. They tried to hype up the show by revealing that the characters and models would be based off of concept art for the original Star Wars movies but since they are being paid a ton by Disney they don't put enough effort into the animation and it ends up looking really bad.

The characters; Zeb is actually a knock-off of Chewbacca, except he can talk. His design is even based off of concept art for Chewie. Ezra doesn't change at all for the entire show but apparently if the team thinks giving him a haircut gives him a personality change, then they are wrong.

The show itself; Back when I watched The Clone wars, every episode was amazing, even cinematic. The animation quality and effects were astounding and you can take away actual lessons and even be willing to watch it again, and again. For Rebels, literally there is nothing to take away from each episode. Every episode is exactly the same. They make a plan to annoy the empire. They steal stormtrooper armor and everyone falls for it. They blow something up. They fly away. Nothing bad ever really happens to them.

Oh yeah, and did i ever mention, that nobody ever dies in this show? I mean sure, a few tie fighters crash and you can presume that they died, But you will never see a character death on-screen. In Clone wars, characters died left and right, even if they were main characters or secondary characters. Sure it was a bit graphic at times but thats what made that show good and a bit dark. There are a few scenes, such as when Ezra runs towards the stormtroopers with his lightsaber and cuts their guns in half, and they run away.(See 'Stormtroopers' below) Like, what? And there is another scene where chopper picks up a blaster and, instead of shooting a stormtrooper with it, Runs up to him and hits him in the head with it, knocking him out.

Stormtroopers; Ok, they are idiots. remember in A New Hope, when the empire was menacing and seemed like they were invincible? You won't get that feeling in this show. The empire is so idiotic sometimes Its just really shocking. For example: there is a scene where the Rebels throw this pig-midget-thing on the window of the imperial base, which is obviously a distraction, and every person in the room immediately whip out their guns and start shooting the impervious glass, repeatedly. And they keep shooting, even after the discovery that, oh, I don't know, the windows in the building that you've been working at for years are invincible, which they should have known, they DONT. STOP. SHOOTING.

Rebellion; This entire show is supposed to be about how the Rebellion formed, hence the name, But wanna know a secret? It doesn't At the end of the show the "rebellion" they started is defeated. Even Leia talked about the Rebellion she started was growing. (So what on earth are WE watching if the actual stuff isnt even going to be in the show?). So basically the entire show has nothing to do with the continuity.

Thrawn; I get it, he's a strategic mastermind, so how come he literally does nothing In season 3 and 4, except steal a piece of wood and try to attack a city? So we're supposed to care about Lothal just because Ezra was BORN there? What?? Anyways, a strategic mastermind gets tricked by a dumb kid and gets kidnapped by whales and then gets teleported away, never to be seen again. (Not joking)

Helicopter inquisitors; There are some people who think The Last jedi ruined star wars, and this "show" saved Star wars. Oh, are you talking about the show where the inquisitors start spinning their lightsabers and fly away like helicopters. I am kidding you not, that is what they do. Can you imagine if during the Duel of the fates, Darth Maul just starts spinning his lightsaber, and flies away, like a helicopter?! Not only that, but at the beginning of season 2, it just starts with Kanan and Ezra fighting 2 inquisitors, without any introduction or explanation where they came from or who trained them.

Darth Maul; So the only chance we get for seeing an episode without the other characters is ruined by stinking Ezra. We COULD OF HAD a episode showcasing exclusively darth-mauls final stand and journey to find and defeat Obi-wan but instead we get to watch Ezra prance around in the desert for 90% of the episode. He literally does nothing.

Ok, this lengthy review is finished, for now. But honestly this show just sucks.

They have won me over and I like the patch work family style. We have Hera Syndulla who is the captain of the Ghost and team mom. Kanan Jarrus is a former Padawan who survived Order 66. Sabine Wren is a Mandalorian warrior and skilled artist (Maybe close to an obsession). Erza Bridger who was a scoundrel or con artist. Garazeb Orrelios who is the muscle of the team with a more complex character than it seems. Finally we have the droid Chopper who enters the list of great droid characters in Star Wars. The crew has a great dynamic, good chemistry and enjoyable quirks that result often in interesting situations. For the antagonist we got agent Kallus who looks like he will become their nemesis for the whole show (only have seen season 1 so far), the grand inquisitor who is enjoyable evil and another character late in the show I wont spoil (Also a teaser for 2 awesome character for season 2). Of cause there will be so familiar faces making appearances too. So far the characters are really good. For the story there a better and weaker episodes. This prevents a higher rating for me. Like I already said the beginning and final episodes of season 1 are really good. Visually the style of the show is impressively good. I liked it better that The Clone Wars which was not bad either. I think I give my recommendations / favorite episodes list before my conclusion: “Spark of Rebellion part 1 and 2” set up the character, setting and premise of the show. It won me over and it is truly enjoyable. “Rise of the Old Masters” for the idea, plot and resolve that deepens the characters. “Path of the Jedi” for valuable lessons, a special guest appearance and character growth. “Idiots Array” for the hilarious plot, cat and mouse game, humor and resolve. The 3 final episodes “Call to Action”, “Rebel Resolve” and “Fire Across the Galaxy” because of another great guest character, good plot, resolve for the character and great set up for the next season. Overall this was a good start but is also improvable. The weaker episodes took the rating down. Still I would recommend this season for the characters, ideas and enjoyable moments. Expand

Though firmly in the Lucas tradition, this is also a Disney cartoon, for a Disney crowd and a Disney corporation--watching, you can almost feel the plastic and the plush--and whatever the characters are up to, however cute or sentimental the business, it is smartly designed and cinematically staged, and not hard to enjoy.

It’s a better-than-average, serious-minded science-fiction cartoon, with well-executed space chases and battles but also an introspection more reminiscent of Japanese anime than of the usual American children’s animation.
