The new entry is more action-oriented and less morally ponderous than the recent Star Trek series. But it still suffers from its predecessors' overdeveloped air of gravitas.
-
An immensely enjoyable, carefully crafted, well-performed creation. Take it from a viewer who has given every Trek incarnation a try and always come away admiring the concept but disappointed with the execution: Voyager hits pay dirt.
-
An impressive, handsomely engineered launch. ... "Voyager" includes all the elements of Roddenberry's original vision: a future full of hope, curiosity, wonder and respect for all cultures; sexual and racial (and for that matter, species) equality, embodied in a diverse but largely harmonious crew; and adventures that intrigue rather than lull viewers. [16 Jan 1995]

It seems an imaginative improvement over previous sequels "Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine." [16 Jan 1995]
-
As well as The Next Generation and better than Deep Space Nine, the new series' two-hour premiere entertainingly balances action/adventure with sociology. [16 Jan 1995]
-
It efficiently, if unevenly, introduces nine new characters and recaptures some of the sense of wonder that made NBC's 1966-69 original the Holy Writ of screen sci-fi. [16 Jan 1995]
-
The cast around Mulgrew is excellent. ... Mulgrew, however, drags it all down. Starfleet commanders are not supposed to be this dull, stiff and joyless. As a woman, she's all cardboard and mannish. [16 Jan 1995]

Comedy isn't the idea behind the "Voyager," the newest spinoff in the Federation franchise, but tonight's debut delivers campy laughs galore... That said, it's also evident that "Voyager" offers more energy and action than either of the previous spinoffs, "The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine," with an adventurous and distinctly less solemn spirit that more recalls the original "Star Trek." [16 Jan 1995]
-
It's still pretty much the same old ride, maybe a little better than DS-9, as the Trekkers call it, not quite as good as Next Generation. [16 Jan 1995]
-
The cast of Voyager is adequate, despite the rocky start. Maybe after the rushed introduction, the show will slow the pace and allow the characters to evolve at a more natural pace. And while doing that, the writers could stretch their imaginations to where no starship has gone before and deliver something better than rehashed Klingons for villains. [15 Jan 1995]
