I love the lenses through which Alien and Star Trek view the world, and this episode smashes the two together in a way that strips each of them of what makes it so insightful. It still works. It still works. There is a base layer of horror, and a solid throughline of emotion, both of which are effective. But the episode never rises beyond that.

Edit: Saw a criticism of how this went back from Serene Squall's "maybe you're neither" to encouraging Spock to embrace his humanity. I don't think that's really an issue. Spock can simultaneously learn to embrace the cultures he is a part of and his own individuality. If anything, his arc is better for it. Plus, embracing humanity is how this arc ends in Undiscovered Country, so it only makes sense.

EDIT #2: I feel like Hemmer and Uhura's story would've worked better if we'd seen how Hemmer's words in this episode were a part of how he approaches life in previous episodes, and if that contrast between him and Uhura was visible in their earlier interactions. Another drawback of going too episodic.
