I grew up with Saturday morning cartoons with better plot lines. The Star Fleet in this re-imagined, to use a rather optimistic term, 23rd century so well established by the original show, is a ridiculous conglomerate of political correctness and upside-down reasoning. It's as if someone put Google in charge of military spaceships. Yes... JJ Abrams movies and Enterprise aside, by the time of Capt. Kirk, it's the military. Like it or not, that's how Roddenberry wrote it. Picard's time may have softened it a bit, but even in the 24th century it's very much the military. Or do science academies throw people in prison for breaking campus rules? Maybe in the SJW wannabe culture portrayed on this show. Not only is this show a horrifying vision of the future, it disappoints on nearly every level. There are things I didn't like about every show and movie, but I never cringed before (OK, maybe a little in ST V... sorry Shatner). I cringe now. It's the worst sci-fi on TV. Expand

    Illogical, disrespectful to fans and new viewers alike, unnecessary R-rated, hijacked by SJWs to promote their fringe propaganda of forced normalcy, no amount of cannibalizing the past can save it.

    An utter failure not worthy of anyone's time and money.

    CBS seem to want a serialised show as opposed to an episodic one, but for some reason haven't actually provided a season plot... in place of a season plot we have "war with the Klingons", and a lot (I mean SERIOUSLY A LOT!) of interpersonal drama, but there are only ever 3 characters with any real dialogue per episode (and one of those characters is always Michael), so we cycle through the same 5 characters having the same arguments over an over again. This is made more tedious as each character's personality and motivations change every episode, I have no idea what a character is going to do or why they are going to do it. I don't like or relate to any of them.

    The dialogue is very stilted, with each character taking it in turns to shout or cry their lines, to the point that each conversation follows the same structure: Conflict, exposition, resolution. At no point advancing the season plot, because there isn't one, there is no challenge or journey... Just a lot of people arguing.

    This is simply a bad show.

    I will not be watching Season 2. Other's on here have said watch Orville instead, I've seen a few episodes of that, and Orville is definitely a better show.

    This show has all of the markings of what they did to Star Wars the Last Jedi and yes my fellow nerds you should be very very angry!

    The writers must be second rate hacks. The only actual fan of Star Trek left this abomination before it began because he too saw that the monkeys had broken free from their cages and were reeking havoc on the creation. Gene Roddenberry would be rolling in his grave if he saw what they did to his beloved IP. This show will inspire no-one. It will not create any new scientists. It will not create any new military personnel who trained in medicine. It will not create any new engineers because none of the things that made any of the Star Treks great is in this show! None of the science, medicine, engineering, or command structures are in this show because the CBS CEO doesn't understand or care about scifi and how it can change a life. Leslie Moonves made the decision for both the new Star Trek movies and STD to be as far away from the original as they possibly can.

    Prepare yourselves for the abomination that's branching out to Jean-Luc Picard. He is next! When Sir Patrick Stewart said he might not be the man we recognize, that means the creators of his show will also be destroying Gene Roddenberry's genious by taking away everything that made Picard --- Picard! You have been warned!

Critics also need to get facts correct, Voyager was the first Star Trek with a leading female, not this horsepucky. DS9 also had several leading females and diversity in cast as well. The Star Trek universe is not about war and conquest, it is exploration and cooperation. Furthermore, Tilly is NOT a universally acclaimed "fan favorite". Do you ever hear what the fanbase is saying? Most fans agree that Michelle Yeoh does a much better job than Martin-Green or Wiseman do with their characters. But what I really wanted was some lovable characters, especially comedy characters who don't understand the way human interaction work like Data, the Doctor or Seven of Nine. Tilly is the closest to a lovable, positive Star Trek character and she disappeared into the background very quickly. At the end of the series, Dad and I turned to each other and asked the same question: Why do they keep giving Burnham monologues? She is SO boring. SO boring! And, dare I say it, I miss the space jargon! It made the show sound smart and I felt privileged for watching it! I learned the word "isotope" listening to them talk. Star Trek has always been about the better angels of our nature. It's about optimism, science, peaceful exploration, empathy, cooperation, maturity. It's about the best humans can be.

    Star Trek: Discovery is a sinister, twisted mockery of all the above. It's about what's worst in us. It's about conflict, war and immature behaviours. It's about corrupt Captains, about officers that mutiny without a second thought, about Starfleet officers that refer to prisoners as "trash" and "animals", about a whole crew that can completely disrespect any and all lifeforms if it suits its needs. Not even the echo of the Prime Directive can survive in this pithole of a show.

    It is NOT a show about exploration. No new (or even old) worlds are explored in this series. It is NOT a show about science. Evidently, so little thought has gone into the technology and science, and so utterly ridiculous are things like the new "spore drive" that whoever had these ideas is undoubtedly scientifically illiterate.

    You might think that the show could be enjoyable if you just try to go beyond the utter unpleasantness. But it is anything but. It is badly written, slow-paced, uninteresting, full of huge plot holes and unlikeable characters that no sane person could relate to.

    I wish I could score it negatively because not only does this abomination not add anything to the world of Star Trek - but it subtracts from it.

Between the constant bickering and undermining between crew members, the utterly bizarre and unnecessary way they've altered the Klingons (arguably the best villains in sci-fi history), or the introduction of radical new technology into a PREQUEL that's supposedly canon... it all adds up to a disaster. Fact is there's not ONE likeable character on the whole show. Everyone is either annoying, obnoxious, or just plain dumb. And this has nothing to do with 'diversity' or any of the controversial elements that people have been talking about... it's just a poorly written and executed show.

    I'm just really disappointed here. This show really is not Star Trek. Not tonally, not stylistically not in any recognizable sense. It's a shame too... with the budget they were given, they had a great opportunity here. Instead we got... well, not a whole lot other than some nice special effects.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Like hundreds have already said, this is absolutely no Star Trek. The most unforgivable aspects of this show are the utter lack of Federation ethics and the unbelievable behaviour of the characters.

    As per the first aspect:
    - There is no way on Earth (or any other planet) in which a mutineer, who has physically incapacitated her captain and single-handedly started a war, would become the go-to person on a Federation spaceship;
    - It goes against all the Federation believes in to exploit another lifeform for fuel, as the Discovery does with the tardigrade: they would literally rather die than do so;
    - There is no way a Federation captain who's abandoned his ship would gain command of another;

    As per the second aspect:
    - It doesn't make any sense the constant bickering of the characters with one another, the utter disrespect of the chain of command, especially in a war situation;
    - The character of Tilly would have never made it to Starfleet:
    - The character of Michael Burnham would have never made it to Starfleet;
    - Michael Burnham does not make any sense as a Vulcan-educated person: she is basically constantly emoting (anger, frustration, disappointment, boredom) and makes almost always illogical decisions;
    - the finale of the Lethe episode makes no sense whatsoever: letting a character who dominates time travel and is clearly deranged and takes pleasure in murdering people go scot-free like that?
    - the obligatory love story of Burnham and Ash is puerile, forced, and frankly cringeworthy.

    In one word, this show is a mess. And don't even get me started of the unforgivable disrespect of canon and the abysmal level of acting, especially from Sonequa Martin-Green.

    This is called "Star Trek" but is not set in the Star Trek universe. This is supposed to take place shortly before TOS, but the society we are shown is entirely different. Gone is the idea that people would be better in the future. No interest is shown in canon in general. Also, only one character really matters, while the others just stand around being impressed. Go watch The Orville.

They no longer work to better themselves with an optimistic view of the future - instead, they are petty, greedy, impulsive, rash, and adversarial. These are qualities that are suppressed by an evolved sensibility by the time Starfleet comes into being - but this is no longer true. The way Michael acts is disgraceful for a Vulcan and for a Human. The Captain, Lorca, would never, ever be entrusted with a ship. He would be cashiered out of Starfleet so fast his head would spin. Even the Maquis act with more dignity. The creator of Star Trek would be ashamed of what his creation has become. No critic, no actor, no producer could claim otherwise and at the same time understand the vision of the future that was Star Trek.

    If you put the above aside, the storytelling is sub-par. There are logical holes within the plots presented. An example: the first episode, the Captain allows the First Officer to get into a space suit and fly on out to a special anomaly they know nothing about, all the while on a time limit due to radiation. This is a plot hole so big you could drive a truck through it. No Captain would allow this. No Starfleet Officer would volunteer for this. And, for someone who lived on Vulcan and grew up in their culture, it is obviously illogical. This is blatant disregard for the intelligence of the fan base. Those in charge think you're stupid and that all you want to be entertained with is fancy, flashy effects and visuals accompanied by action, with no thought needed. Do not support this show. It will either become the standard for Star Trek, and we will have lost something great, or it will be the final nail in the coffin for the franchise. Either way, the outcome is sad.

    And a last remark: this is a show I would never allow my kids to watch. That says everything you need to know.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't pay, thank God! My brother was staying over and has a CBS all access and we watched it together. At the end of ep 1 I was so furious we had a half hour long talk about it. OK, I screamed and ranted and he listened to me rant.
    *Starts off with an irrelevant storyline wasting the gods only know how much time with ridiculous banter between CPT and #1 on a planet that has no bearing on the show. It was all about wandering in a desert and Talking. NO one cares!
    *Klingons arrive but I had run to the kitchen to grab a drink and came back and caught one glimpse and asked, Who are these new aliens? My brother answered, Those are Klingons. I said, No they aren't. And they aren't. They don't look or even speak like Klingons. Since when did the Klingon language sound like a Native American Tribe? Since when are their teeth so huge and in the way you can't even understand them when they're speaking English? What's up with Klingons wearing what looks like a Cardassian breastplate? This started an argument over where this show lies in the timeline, which I said it HAD to be a few hundred years after Janeway because at least that would explain the superior technology, Klingon changes and well...everything. But nope. A quick phone search and I discovered how wrong I was. We had to pause so I could rant about how stupid it was and how Klingons are established as near legendary canon. How they thought toying with that was a good idea is beyond comprehension. Then, nearly all 24 houses just decide to accept this Klingon as the embodiment of Kayless, in like 5 seconds... I should have turned it off then.
    *SEVEN YEARS and this is how you treat your 1st Officer? Where's the trust? Seven years and you decided NOW is the time to knock your captain unconscious and take over after only 5 mins contemplation about it? Even our logical Spock wouldn't have been that stupid. The show would have made more sense if the CPT ignored her 1st officer, started a war, got killed and then, knowing she was right but suffering from survivor guilt, our main character went on to be 1st Officer on another ship. But no...they did the most illogical thing possible and expect us to just play along.
    *The science officer. Don't know his name, don't care. How in the holy hell did an alien like that end up on a starship? Annoying, stupid, cowardly. Then, we get a dying crew member whining he couldn't understand how they were at war, they were explorers. Apparently, neither the character or the writers ever watched the original Star Trek. The Federation has always been at war or nearly at war constantly.
    *Against my better judgment I actually watched ep 2. Don't go that far. You'll just be disappointed.
    And CBS things people are going to pay extra for this? I wouldn't watch more if they paid me in hard cash.

    The first half of the season was perfectly watchable, with the revamped Klingons a lot more interesting than previous incarnations and great special effects. The story itself was average but held my interest to some degree.
    However the start of the second half of the season has been utter nonsense and in particular the fight scenes are just laughable. Just comes across as lazy direction

To the point, the producers of Star Trek Discovery have clearly done a bait and switch by using the name Start Trek as a cheap trick to try and reinvent the Sci-Fi franchise wheel. A huge gamble that I believe, will ultimately diminish their fan base rather than adding to it. Rather than holding true to the fundamental elements of good storytelling with well thought out characters and story arcs, there is this persistent and deliberate effort to reach for the sparkling sound bite at the expense of believable and cohesive story telling. The major themes of the series betray the history and lore of Star Trek with no plausible explanation. This is a thinly veiled attempt to appear substantive when in fact; each attempt leaves viewers laughing at the absurdity of what the writers are asking from the audience, to suspend disbelief, which is after all, the secret ingredient which makes all Sci-Fi work.

    The occasional suspension of believability is necessary for any successful Sci-Fi story, but when the audience is asked to do so in at least half the scenes, or by rewriting Star Trek lore and history, the producers are not asking us to watch Star Trek any longer. Instead they are asking us to take what amounts to an acid trip into the disconnected world of meaningless fantasy.

    First impressions, when Star Trek Enterprise debuted the bridge of the ship was what you would expect given the timeline of the series. But in Discovery, the bridge looks more like a massive sound stage four or five times the size of the original Star Trek and two to three times that of STNG. With more computer screens than crew members to monitor them, it all sparkles and screams high tech, yet with all this displayed information, crew members continue to pull up fantastical bits of information from only two or three consoles. Let’s get real for a moment, if a crew member has to run, not walk, from one console to the next because of the distance, aren’t we a bit over the top of what is practical? Especially when you have a voice activated AI with the ship's computer. This is what I mean by all sparkle and no substance. Star Trek Discovery requires the audience to completely dismiss all practicality and leap into magic thinking.

    Second impression, how in the world do human or alien crew members’ get from the hello’s of just having met, to I love you so much I’m willing to die for you, all in less than 15 minutes of storytelling? If you want your audience to buy in emotionally with its characters, there needs to be some plausible plot development around the relationships. Suspending disbelief on this aspect of storytelling truly is alien and not of this world. Maybe Star Trek Discovery would play better on another network in a galaxy far, far away.

    It's not Star Trek. Whatever this mess is, they paid the "professional" shills (critics) off to mislead the public into purchasing a CBS online subscription. Bait-n-switch.

    I will say this for it, STD has exposed the professional critics for what they are... paid advertising without credibility.

    There shouldnt be a season finale. It should be a series finale. The show stinks to high heaven. They are trying too hard to appease every group, gender, etc. and its totally obvious.

Overall a good scifi but not star trek in any way, i can watch any star trek series all day every day and i do every day and night, but this series is not and never will be one of them, i wanted to like it but i simply can't.

    This isnt true diversity this is just pandering. Not to mention the Star Trek has always been one of most diverse shows ever. I still feel like this is all shoehorned in there, and it didn't need it.

    But in this quest to represent everybody and everything at all times they forgot to represent one thing, smart science fiction and good storytelling. Things that have always been the hallmark of Star Trek at its best. Tho honestly at this point we have way more messages than hits.

    Instead of attacking fanfiction they should hire the guys because most of those low budget productions have a much better story to tell than any of their commercial products of the last 20 years.

    What is there to say, Discovery is one of the worst series I had the misfortune to watch (partially, I canceled my Netflix subscription because of that junk within the trial period). Seldom have I seen a less engaging cast act their way through a quagmire of bad writing and bad characterizations. I was rooting every minute I watched for the protagonist to die so that the torment ends...

    Kirk would have ejected this show in space...It is Not for trekkies and if by any chance you have a trek nostalgia, you can always watch The Orville. Even though the SFX are top, it just relies too much on action, shooting, firing torpedoes, simplified logic and silly thinking and too much straying from Strafleet directives. No exploration and no surprises await the crew this time. Simply boring..

    Star Trek fans have had to either bail or adapt to a lot of big changes over the last ten years. First there were the Abrams films that both upped the emphasis on often mindless action and Star Wars visual style (just compare the new phasers to the old if you missed it). Nevertheless, that step was doable for most because at the end of the day there was still the core beating heart of Star Trek that many of us recognized – that ever present warm and optimistic view of the future that even with sometimes dark themes could be enjoyed as a family. Now, in comes Star Trek: Discovery. Like the Abrams’ films, it largely spits on cannon more often than it doesn’t (a cannon wink here and there is meant to placate fans so they can convince themselves it’s the same universe), but this new show goes even further. It continues to up the action, and jettison the brains, but now it goes where no Trek has gone before – because it was never what Trek was about in the first place. This new Trek incorporates a hardcore TV-MA tone which makes it decidedly not an optimistic or family tone vibe. Not only does the show loose it’s optimism tone, but fans all over the world lose something they’d always valued about it. There’s plenty of room and reason in this world for TV-MA shows. The Walking Dead, Vikings, Game of Thrones – there is no shortage of them right now, but why CONSCRIPT a show with a 50 year legacy to be something it’s not? Why INTENTIONALLY narrow your viewership? Disney protects the Star Wars legacy while CBS cares nothing about Star Trek’s – even if it was the best written and best acted show we’ve ever seen, aborting the optimistic tone that was a 50 year tradition’s hallmark isn’t worth the trade. It’s shocking how little confidence CBS displays in this 50 year franchise. I have PLENTY of hardcore science fiction films available to me if I want them. Hardcore has ALWAYS been the most common sci fi on television and movie screens. What I don’t have is plenty of new optimistic Star Trek to watch, and now I never will. What’s worse, once you open that Pandora’s box the safety net is gone forever. From this time forward, comic books, novels, movies, shows, video games, they all can suddenly jump into the decidedly R rated territory this new show has brought in. Sound like a slippery slope? Recent news points to the next Star Trek film being done by Quentin Tarantino with a contractual R rated obligation. Perhaps the slipper slope fallacy isn’t a fallacy after all, but one thing is certain, from the cannon changes, to the action changes, to the philosophical changes, and most importantly, to the tonal changes, this show is Star Trek in name only. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Seriously ... it's as bad as Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The horrible Mary Sue character of Michael (virtue signaling by the producers), combined with REALLY wooden acting is just a complete turn off. That, and the fact that this just isnt Star Trek. It's a FAR below average, amateurish take on war in outer space with a Star Trek logo stamped on it.

    Seriously?

    although this iteration of Star Trek is visually amazing (it blows every other Trek series out of the water in terms of visual effects and just purely awesome camera work and art direction) it's like Disney has taken over Star Trek too.

    I'm all for human rights, and plurality, and infinite diversity in infinite combinations. So, I don't have a problem with a female captain or a female lead character.

    I DO have a problem with the overly emotional femme themes (similar to the horrible line by the also horrible female Asian character in Star Wars, Rose Tico, "We're going to win this war not by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love!" *Huge groan and eye roll.*)

    Yes, and if the Allies had similar notions to fighting Nazis, Hitler would be ruler of the galaxy.

    The same crap is going on in the Star Trek universe. (Not to mention the retarded writing that made the female lead character a ward of Spock's parents, who calls Sarek "father," and who apparently got bed time stories together WITH Spock as a child.

    (Never mind that this was never ever mentioned by any Trek series ever, and none of the relevant characters ever mentioned her previously. You want to make her grow up on Vulcan? Fine. Make her the first human to be schooled on Vulcan? Fine. But writing her into Spock's family? It's like going to an Online forum and reading very very bad fan fiction. Who writes this total and utter CRAP?)

    Oh yeah.

    The Millenial SJWs and their Gen-X enablers who have taken over everything in California.

    So ... to sum up.

    These jackasses have ruined TWO of my childhood's most cherished franchises. No money from me is going to these people ever again.

    They asked for a season - so I watched the whole season before delivering a final verdict, which was: I hated this show so much I registered on this site to vent my anger.

    The lead character is an unlikeable mutineer who shows disrespect to all of her peers and superiors in the 1st half of the season.

    The other characters are peripheral and don't get to do a lot. We still know nothing about the majority of the bridge crew (you know, the highly trained professionals who actually run the ship in EVERY iteration of Star Trek) at the end of the season.

    Praising "diversity" and shouting to the world about having a black female lead isn't enough if the character is not engaging or there are no other characters of note in the show. It just smacks of brow beating the fans to like the show otherwise you are "racist", or "sexist" which I find offensive. In this case the emperor has no clothes, Micahel Burnham just isn't good enough to carry the show on her own in my opinion.

    The Klingon re-design is frankly awful. The terrible new make up doesn't let the characters emote well, the Klingon dialogue likewise, and the Klingon ships look like they belong in a different franchise altogether. The changes made to them are so radical that they look like another species altogether and I have to say I would respect the show runners more if they had created a new race instead of despoiling an existing fan favourite.

    Even JJ Trek had Klingons and ships that were recognisably like the ones we are familiar with.

    The changes to Starfleet are only slightly less jarring. Case in point the Andorians and Tellarites get ugly redesigns - but the Vulcans don't for some reason.

    The writers seem to have focused on shock tactics and plot twists for the sake of them, and as a result the alleged serialised format just falls flat. The end to the season felt rushed and made little sense. In fact much of the show has people doing things that are plain stupid "because plot" and things that are vitally important to the overall story tend to disappear with no real explanation or reason.

    I am glad that I didn't have to pay to watch this show, as it is on NETFLIX in the UK. I won't be bothering with season 2 when it arrives.

    Many of my friends feel the same way.

    My real fear is that this iteration of Star Trek may irreversibly damage one of my favourite fictional settings. I hope this show dies fast before that happens.

    Gene was a pilot in WW2 and a decorated veteran. He worked in the Los Angeles Police Department. He honed his writing craft writing speeches for the Police Department then moving into Hollywood scripts; mostly in Westerns, Police Procedurals, and Cop Shows. Star Trek was born of two shows one he wrote for was about a US Marine Corp base that was made and the other was about a muli-ethnic crew of an Airship in the 1930's that traveled the World that was not made.
    Any signs of SJW yet?
    In the 1st season of TOS he enlisted Harlan Ellison to promote the show. At the time Harlan was considered liberal but at the time of death he was hounded by the hashtag me too movement for playing a practical joke on a woman.
    Roddenberry injected Patriotic and Christian themes into TOS through out it's run. He hired and encourage Nichelle Nichols to stay on the series even before the MLK call. Through out his life he was a sexual libertine with an open relationship with his wives. Raised a Southern Baptist but later in life considered himself a Humanist and sometimes even a Pagan but still contributed to Churches and advocated Christian and Moral themes in television shows.
    Gene never wore a Man Bun, ate Soy, or considered himself a Socialist.
    Gene had all the Marks of Cain for a SJW; he was White, Male, Hetero, a Veteran, a Cop, and a Patriot.
    Gene would have considered STD an abomination and a cancer on television if he had lived to see it.
    It is void of any on his establishing values and ethics.

    I watched the first 4 episodes and I find this show to be inferior to most fanfics for its disregard to established lore. The Klingons are a embarrassment and Sarek's personality and backstory get twisted to the point where I think that it's a grave insult to Mark Lenard's work on the character.

    Don't watch this if you love Star Trek, watch Orville instead, that show has the heart and spirit of what made the original Star Trek great.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made it to 13 episodes. I really tried to like it. The problem is that apart from Jason Isaacs performance as the captain, this show really has nothing going for it. It tries to mix a dark and gritty tone with characters that are mostly starry-eyed idealists, and what you end up with is a whole lot of boring with a side of non-sensical writing. *spoilers below*

    As I said, Jason Isaacs character was the lone bright spot for me. It felt fresh to have a daredevil sort of captain who didn't shy away from hard choices, even morally ambigious ones, if thats what it took to win the war against the Klingons. The grittiness and tone of the story matched his character perfectly. He was a warrior captain surrounded by sheep, and it was kind of amazing to see him rally Discovery to several big victories against the Klingon.

    Unfortunately, you only get a couple episodes of this, as the show goes into this ridiculous parallel universe plotline wherein its revealed Isaac's character is the main villain, and then is killed off. This all happens in one episode, Episode 13 to be exact.

    With the sole compelling character in the show killed off, I don't see a reason to keep watching. The story is ridiculous, the remaining characters are either boring or spend most of their time barreling from one emotional breakdown to another. Doug Jones is decent as Saru, but he can't carry the show alone.

    This show fails as Star Trek, but perhaps worse, it fails as good sci-fi.

Clear breakdowns in Military / Star Fleet protocols obvious to anyone except the writers who obviously either never watched the show or had any structure in their lives. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is so bad it is unbelievable. I have stomached up to episode 7, and can literally take no more. The story-lines are so unbelievable and tired. Right off the top of my head here are some issues that come to mind that give you an idea of what to expect. Episode 7 involves a time loop. The script is so drawn out it is hard to actually watch it because it is irritatingly stupid. How about just destroying the creature before it gets on the ship, which would completely fix the problem? Instead they go about some convoluted response involving DANCING!!! Another stupid example of inconsistencies among the dozens I've encountered that ruin it is the fact that in this version of Star Trek you can't transport people if they have no vitals. But shortly before using this to ramp up the plot they transported a bomb?

    The show has way too much romance. Every chance the writers get they throw love scenes or platitudes about how humanity can be soooo much better if it wasn't for all the bad people. The Klingons look fake and nothing like traditional Klingons. When they do show Klingons, they use subtitles that scroll so fast you can't actually think about the implication of what you are reading.

    The actors are okay. Not great, but mediocre. Passable. But the writers are trying so hard to put SJW and PC nonsense into the scrip that it has totally ruined the show. IT IS HORRIBLE!!

    About CBS all access. You will regret the fee they require, simply because there is nothing worthwhile on CBS. The owners thought they had the greatest idea since sliced bread: Use a tried and true franchise (Start Trek) to draw loyal fans who wouldn't be able to help but pay a fee. Everyone was going to get rich, until it turned out the show was unwatchable.
    The Initial season opener wasn't too bad, but trust me, it goes down hill rapidly. I'd definitely wager a bet that Orville lasts longer than Discovery, by a WIDE margin. Two seasons of Discovery at the VERY max. #startrekdiscovery killed the franchise.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is like a badly written fan fic. Everyone is an idiot (at least some of them gets killed for their stupidity), not one character is likable. This is not the Starfleet i know for decades, and it was never like this even at their lowest (ex: Dominion war). Star Trek was always about the bright future and (ironically) discovery. It was about curiosity, to wonder at the universe. ST had shown the best of humanity a future we can aspire for. But not this series. This is just a generic sci-fi with a Star Trek skin on it. None of these characters would have made trough Starfleet academy even just a few years later...

    The Expanse is way better at being a sci-fi with much better stories to tell.

    The Metacritic page says this: "Summary: 10 years before the Enterprise, the U.S.S. Discovery sets out to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before."
    Except nothing of this is true.

    SPOILERS
    The ship sets out to war and jumps all over the place with a new drive tech which is a bad joke (at least a little bit of sci-fi is in it).

    Some things the protagonist did at the outset of the series:
    - She (Michael) disregard for orders after Captain Geogiou stated to simply do a flyby of the alien ship/probe/whatever. There was no "exceed this mandate at your discretion" clause. She consciously disobeyed and landed
    - She then, instead of avoiding the Klingon warrior's defense by moving in any other way, she chose to surge forward into him and killed the warrior
    - She then proceeded to incapacitate her own superior or commandeered her ship
    - Then she murdered the Klingon boss (her weapon was on stun during the boarding of the Klingon vessel, but she had set it to kill and then shot this dude on purpose (while the whole purpose of the boarding was to capture the guy, which would have been possible even after the captains death, but she choose to kill the Klingon))

    Are we supposed to like this character? She should be in jail for her crimes (she even gets a life sentence but they just wave it, cause she got plot-shield).

    The acting is not inspiring. The dialog is terrible. The glingons dont look even close to the original ones. The captain calls michael number one like she is forced to use that expression, not at all like it is her pet name. Nothing flows. Everything is all over the place. I was not at all impressed with the graphics. The way the ships appear suddenly and always move slightly is so unrealistic. I found nothing good about the new star trek. Expand

    Discovery feels like it’s adrift between the adventure-of-the-week format of its network-TV predecessors and the kind of complex serial favored by cable and streaming.

    Star Trek: Discovery feels like it's just finding its footing. On the promising side, Doug Jones is already a standout as Science Officer Lt. Saru, who's from an alien race called Kelpiens. And James Frain is perfectly cast as Sarek, the Vulcan who veteran "Trek" fans know as the father of Spock. The relationship between Burnham and Sarek is one of the more intriguing aspects of Star Trek: Discovery.

    Happily Star Trek: Discovery strikes a balance between what diehard Trekkies love about Roddenberry’s universe and what J.J. Abrams injected into its theatrical resurrection. Ethical dilemmas and a clash between cultures and traditions comprise the fore of the narrative, but the hours don’t skimp on phaser blasts and broadcast-appropriate carnage.
