    It may feature some spectacularly dopey people but it’s a smart comedy, one that proves two things: There are, in fact, new places to take the half-hour-or-so sitcom format. And there is such a thing as a free lunch.

    We trust Greg Garcia to not beat a dead horse with pandemic gags on Sprung. But for the first episode, they are a good way to introduce the story of Jack and the rest of the characters, and Garcia is well on the way to establishing character humor as the center of the series.

    It’s full of talented actors, and they get into semi-interesting scrapes, but it doesn’t feel entirely consequential. The show seems like it’s trying to say something about everything.

    Pitiful white savior is arrested for what should be a slap on the wrist crime. While imprisoned with minorities, he learns how to be a real criminal, poor guy. Luckily, thanks to COVID, he's released a few years early from his over punishing sentence. He then is able to move in with his cellmate (who is an absolute caricature of a Mexican man) and his mother. Come to think of it, any character on this show who isn't white, is either gay or a complete stereotype. From the illiterate black man, to the Latino gangbanger in the neighborhood. Luckily our white savior is able to outwit them all, except of course the woman he decides to take for his mate, she happens to be a little smarter than all the others. Seriously, this show is like stepping back in time to when talented minority actors just didn't have many roles available to them. In addition to the overwhelming racially stereotypical characters, the writing just isn't that funny. It also feels like a relic to a bygone tv era. This may actually be what appealed to critics, since they seem to love the show. I, for one, won't be tuning in for any more of it.… Full Review »

My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope, and now Sprung features characters that would be at home shopping the home furnishings department at Goodwill. But Garcia doesn't look down at his characters. They may not be the brightest, but there's moments of heart, joy, optimism and self ealbetween the clever jokes and dialog.… Full Review »
