The second series of Skins contains a darker tone that pervades various plot-lines that include teenage pregnancy, academic struggles and death. During the character's attempts to mature and progress, many are willing to change their personality to achieve their goals such as Sid and Cassie. Meanwhile Tony, the anti-hero of the first series deals with the aftermath of last series' denouement, he unravels as a completely different character. Personally I view this as the break-out performance by Nicholas Hoult as Tony. Although not as a funny as the first series, the second relies on shock, sadness and hope from the audience in a bleak conclusion to the character's teenage lives. Full Review »

This is one of those unfortunate situations where nostalgia has definitely given me fonder memories of skins than it maybe really deserves. This is one of those unfortunate situations where nostalgia has definitely given me fonder memories of skins than it maybe really deserves. The show definitely shows glimpses of promise but so many of the storylines are so far-fetched and told with such a heavy hand. Some of the stories are definitely showing their age now also.

With that said, there's no denying that when Skins gets it right it really works. I particularly feel this about the finale which nails all of its goodbyes and really gives Gen 1 the send-off they deserve. I just wish that they kept this level of quality throughout the season.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. After I had watched the first series, I had high expectations of the second. I really loved Skins 1 and I can even say it's my favourite TV series. Season 2 really came as a shock to me. The first episode was in the line of the nine episodes of season 1 - I can't complain about that one - but it all starts with the second episode. Really, Maxxie being stalked by a little Welsh - at least, I think she's Welsh - girl who is really obsessing about him and even holds a diary in which she describes whatever Maxxie is doing? I think it's not that realistic.
But in comparison to that, there's even a worse thing that happens in series 2: Michelle and Sid have sex together. In series 1 Sid refuses to have sex, which is totally in line with his character. Now, he does have sex. Why the sudden change? Is it because he has just lost his father? Maybe it is. But in my opinion it is a bit strange. Sid's in love with Cassie - it was clearly stated that he was over Michelle.
Another point for my dismay is the deaths in this series. OK, sometimes there are good seasons to let people die in stories like Skins, but here there wasn't really a reason. Why did Sid's dad have to die? It only brings more darkness and maybe even a bit of sensation to the story. Sensation for sensation's sake can't make me love a series. It's the same with the two sex scenes (Anwar and Sketch, Michelle and Sid): it doesn't really contribute to the storyline and therefore it is sensation seeking.
    Some things just donâ
