While the third season gets some easy, well-worn comic mileage from Annie’s new forays into dating, it’s elevated by budding, complicated, familiar, occasionally disastrous relationships with two very different men that define most of the back half of the season.
-
Throughout the season, we watch as a more confident Annie struggles to navigate self-empowerment with her own privileges, and “Shrill” makes the smart move not to excuse Annie’s bad behavior but instead allows her to face actual consequences.
-
There are shoutier shows out there about what it means to be a woman, but Shrill, despite its title, excels in quiet confidence and subtlety.
-
The third and final season, which dropped May 7 on Hulu, firmly establishes the series as one entirely comfortable in its own skin.
-
It’s an insightful and enjoyably low-key send-off for a show whose low-key vibe is one of its greatest assets.
-
From season one’s beloved Fat Babe Pool Party to the sparkling banter between Annie and Fran, Shrill has always been its strongest when exploring joy. The final season forgets that.
-
An entire season of no conflicts and Shrill’s series finale ends with a mess of loose ends, that makes it feel like all Annie’s and Fran’s personal accomplishments have amounted to nothing and leaves viewers with no resolution.
