Though this special still has more jokes per minute than just about any other show on TV, one tradeoff of this doubled runtime is that there aren’t quite as many blink-and-you-miss-it gags as in the regular episodes. But the core idea of having jokes in as many forms as possible still holds. Salahuddin is still a pro at delivering a punchline under his breath. ... If this “Black History Month Spectacular” proves anything, it’s that this is a show with both a timelessness and specificity to thrive in any era.

IFC has released quite a few of the sketches from the special, but while certainly funny on their own, Sherman’s Showcase is a sketch show that truly excels and delivers on the laughs once you can see it all put together.

A hilariously absurd sketch comedy that masquerades as a “Soul Train”-esque show.

Throughout the show, the smart ensemble of Sherman’s provides a wild ride through the past that includes wack after-school movies, a goofy game show called “Get Your Boy,” and a brilliant animated segment that transforms A Charlie Brown Christmas into a Black history cartoon with the Roots replacing The Peanuts. ... Moving at a speedy pace, the show constantly delivers.

The delightfully funny, sharp “Sherman’s Showcase Black History Month Spectacular” is a welcome return from writers and stars Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle.

“Black History Month Spectacular” is a full serving of, if not always joy, at least consistently sly amusement.
