This is a rare tv show. It has a terrific acting ensemble and equally great direction. The sets, camera work, music—everything is very intentional and intelligently crafted to help the wildly and wonderfully troubling story.

Severance works best for me when its scenes are spinning between comedy, sci-fi, horror, and absurdism without the need for conventional storytelling (even when it's going down that road more travelled, it does it well). If you like Kafka and Havel, or Pinter and Beckett, or Gilliam’s Brazil, this will be your cup of odd-tasting but delicious tea.

It is not for most (maybe younger generations) who seek TikTok video-length gratification. The story unfolds over the course of the season. Easter eggs are left. Mysteries unravel. By the finale, I was sitting on the edge of my seat screaming at the TV. I don't know if I've ever experienced this kind of intimate connection with a plot and before. Quite a stunning achievement. Feels kind of like I read a classic novel. Waiting for season 2 is torture! Expand

I normally really hate mysteries, partially because my autistic brain understands that mysteries are manipulative and deliberately withhold or redirect patterns to create tension, but this show does it well enough that I enjoy the journey. The acting is amazing and the overall structure of each episode is satisfying. The music is tense! There are enough breaks in the overall tension to keep you from burning out. It's genuinely funny too. Expand

It has probably the most original and creative concept of the last years. The Kafkaesque & surreal Lumon combined with the severance procedure is truly a genius idea. The show builds perfectly; it always adds something to the mystery so that you can't stop watching it. It's like a puzzle. An episode from The Twilight Zone made into an entire season. Felt like it was made for me, but I hope other people feel the same way. Criminally underrated show...easily a 9/10. (and ironic that Apple made it) Expand

I was unsure what to expect going into this but was pleasantly surprised by what was delivered. Loved the brutalist design of the workplace - reminded me of the control videogame i played recently. Although I kind of wanted it to remain a perfect self contained wonder, the second season has already been confirmed and I suspect that as more questions are answered and the mystery gets explained and the tension of not knowing fades away, so will much of the entertainment value. This was a great first season though. Now I must go back to enjoy my hard earned melon party.

I wanted to like this, I was pre-disposed to liking this, and I apologize to the shill army out there, but this is just horrible. Its banality is record-breaking, it's boring to the point of watching water boil. I seriously could not stomach this travesty past the second episode. It's like if both Twilight Zone and Black mirror got drunk at a party, did the deed, tried to Plan B the deed, but this was born anyway.

Black humour, surrealistic, unnerving,... those snob hipsters will dig that!" The thing is, Kafka was a master at using the fewest word, to compact his -short, very short- stories to launch a powerful punch to the gut.
This, as the LA Times critic pointed out, is the exact opposite: A tedious, impossibly slow paced road to -apparently- nowhere that is as behind the curve as the corporate culture (1980's) it depicts.

There was a far superior show on Adult Swim: Corporate. Plus it had a real Jewish humorous undertone to it, like the real Kafka.

As a result, each side doesn't know anything about the other. On the plus, the visuals are strikingly stark, sterile and stylized. On the negative, things happen with tedious slowness. While there are consistent ominous overtones, the tension doesn't develop. The final episode ramps up the stakes, but leaves things hanging for Season 2. The cast also includes Patricia Arquette (as the creepy boss), John Turturro (as one of the workers) and Christopher Walken (as the man he befriends). Another series that will be suspended and will never have an ending.
That's what I thought at the end of the first season, when I realised I knew very little about the characters, the setting, anything. 9 episodes with very few actors, a drawn out script and an almost non-existent setting.
Yet the very final episode runs too long, opens up so many scenarios that it calls for a renewal of at least five to six seasons. Which, as we all know, will never happen. It is more realistic to think that, cliffhanger after cliffhanger, we will find ourselves at the end of the second or third season without knowing much more than we do now and with the announcement: "We're sorry, it ends here, there won't be another season".
I was wrong to start seeing it and I do not recommend doing so. We should only start seeing finished products, because there is no respect for the audience.

This is my only suspicion as to why this gets such high reviews. That's why there are relatively few ratings here, and they're mostly positive. You go into this show either a fan of the actors / premise, or you don't, because within 2-3 episodes, it hits a brick wall in terms of popular appeal. Here's my issue with this show: it's literally devoid of charm. This is probably because of the actors, not just the dreary setting. The writing itself comes off as a wannabe highbrow, but ultimately just is boring, unfunny, and pedantic.

But overall, it's void of charm.

I know that people are going to say "that's the point of it." But the actors lack compunction. There's nothing there to the performance. You have to have screen presence, and the main actors generally lack it. From what I understand this show was probably done among a friend group and they hired only friends, rather than people who would have made for more compelling TV.

It comes off as trying to push the critique of corporate culture to new lengths, but it just feels like this was done before, many times over, better. It felt like a copy of something that we have all seen before. In a way it just felt like a corporate take on a corporate work setting. It's just silly.

I guess for some, it runs a bit slow. However, for me personally, every moment of this show is purposeful and cherished. I suppose it won't be for some; dark humor crossed with dystopian science fiction might be a little niche. But there's really something for everyone in here. I will say this: if you aren't willing to engage your mind and become curious about the elements of the act of severance, some of the most compelling bits of the show may sail over your head. If you are staying focused and curious, you will not only understand what is taking place, but you will start noticing the DEEP attention to detail that takes place in this show. There are visual metaphors with colors such as between red and blue (as in red pill and blue pill), there are subjective interpretations for critical dialogue that could go one way or another (specifically with Ms. Cobel), and there are mysteries we can only speculate about. My only reservation about the show is can the second season keep this quality going? Can it stay this perfect? Will the showrunners choke under the pressure? Was this a one off? My concerns are eased when I realize how creative and detailed the season actually is and that this couldn't possibly be a one off. Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller are two clever and genius creators. Holding my breath for the next season. But in the meantime, and for the rest of my life I am certain, I will be holding the first season of this show as some the best television I have ever experienced. EDIT: Looking at some of the negative reviews here and I am just aghast. One negative reviewer is quoted saying it is "devoid of charm". Umm....what? The endless hallways, the passive aggressive nature of Milchick, the refiner's incentives/office parties, the relationships in the office, the cult like worshipping of Kier, and I could go on and on. There is charm in spades here. Another reviewer couldn't get past the fact that this fictional world would allow the practice of severance at all. And I look at this reviewer's words and wonder if we watched the same show? Hey bud....that was covered multiple times. It is an EXTREMELY controversial practice in this fictional world. However, Lumon is using it's influence and money to buy favor in politics. The Eagans are even putting their own family into the severance program in order to show the world that it's all kosher. I won't say more than that.
Finally, another negative reviewer says they didn't make it past episode 2. Setting aside the fact that you didn't really give the slow burn of this show a chance, if you didn't get captured by episode one, there is something lacking in your fundamental curiosity when it comes to science fiction. Maybe this just isn't your genre. I can't remember the last time I was actually offended by someone not liking a show/film I like. I just have to wonder....if you don't like this show....what's wrong with you?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually wonderful, outstanding acting, above average writing. It's a refreshingly different, however there's just so many points where I lose the my suspension of disbelief, I had to go with a 7 for this.

Couple of examples -

Your chief of security is murdered and his all powerful key card is missing, how does a mega-corp like lumen not deactivate that immediately and ruin all the gangs plans?

How long does it really take to cut through a knit tie even with a dull knife...seriously.

The OTC switches, i was really expecting Dylan to wedge the little trinket he got in one of them. They way those switches rotate, especially with the guards on them are just asking for something to be wedged in there, A pencil would have worked, seriously, go back and look at them :). That way he could have held the door and being much bulkier than Milchick could have kept him completely out, even without his kevlar tie.

On that note why are the switches close enough together for a short pudgy fellow to reach both of them, that's a serious security design issue for a 2 man system lol....

Anyway, maybe I'm nit-picking, there are other examples I don't want to list here. It's a fun show. It's definitely worth the watch, and I'll dive into season 2 when it comes out.

The Stiller directed episodes are better than the others I think. Please do watch this , it's better than 90% of the crap being churned out now.

Oh and I forgot to mention, the way this show handles the gay relationship is the way it should be done...it's not tacked on as a statement, it's relevant to the plot and really heartfelt especially in the finale. I can't count the number of woke-washed **** shows I've turned off because they were political statements designed as entertainment. (looking at you Last of Us) - Bravo Severance.

Boy was I wrong! The premise behind the show is fascinating, raising many questions about how we treat work/life balance, but the story itself is amazing. The detailed blending of different decades in clothing, architecture, and decoration and technology to help depict the split between In and Out (not saying any more! no spoilers!) was incredible. Each episode ended with a New Event, making you go "ok what is this additional twist?!" - and then the ending of the season ... I do not remember the last time I was so enraged (in a really good way) that I have to wait for season 2! The actorrs are also incredible, a stellar cast. Hands down an amazing show Expand

The best show since Breaking Bad. I'm not kidding. The first season is one of the best seasons of TV ever created, and it will go down in history as such. Incredible, profound, haunting, blackly hilarious, and a brilliant labour of love.

If you thought this was just a story about taking down corporate culture, you're missing the point. It's about the nature of existence, consciousness, modern life, and self.

AMAZING !!!

First off, i had no idea Ben Stiller was capable of directing in the first place. Let alone direct this gem. Severance delivers suspense, mystery, thrills, and a few satire chuckles here and there. Every episode uncovers at least
