Season 2 Review: The wildly incongruous but perfectly chosen rock soundtrack, the cool freeze-frames, the fist fights, the banter and of course the battle scenes are all unashamedly exciting – and the Sicily landing, with Mayne’s men dodging Italian bullets under powdery grey moonlight, is as cool as hell. Season 2 Review: Several of his new recruits are compelling in a brutal kind of way, with Mark Rowley a hilariously unhinged Jock McDiarmid, and Theo Barklem-Biggs’s Reg Seekings getting a particularly disturbing storyline later on. But it’s the contrast between Mayne and his new superior, Gwilym Lee’s suave Bill Stirling (brother of the SAS “midwife” David, now languishing in a prison with a beard), that distinguishes the early episodes. Season 1 Review: For people raised on a diet of Call of Duty and sub-Tarantino knock-offs, SAS Rogue Heroes will feel like a breath of fresh air. For others, it will feel like an indulgent and messy rewriting of recent(ish) history, where each sequence has a 50:50 chance of hitting a bum note. Adapted by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) from the official history and war diary of the SAS, this is the whip smart and bitterly funny story of "ungentlemanly warfare" in North Africa. Excellent casting, lots of twists, and real heroics. Loved it.

Sounds like a winner, right? A British WWII spec.ops origin story. Add some modern kick ass music and action, voila! It's just missing something. I find no connection with any of the characters. I get the appeal, but this show simply does not make anyone aside from Dominic West remotely interesting or likeable. I know, I know, they're the "rogue heroes" and they got **** done. All due respect to the real SAS, but this show seems to have excised any honor that unit had, and it does a disservice to them.… Expand
