Rick & Morty is a very funny and sometimes dark animated SF comedy series. Justin Roiland is an extremely talented individual and he's the heart of this show. Episodes are generally self-contained, but there are references to other episodes and there is an interesting overarching story. I'm really curious to see where it goes.

Episode 9 was the worst offender, and now I have some pretty good suspicions as to why the direction was changed.
From now on we can expect more tributes to psychopathy and violence, mixed with mediocre or plain bad jokes, and the occasional presumptuous attempt at preaching, written by a person who hasn't lived life enough to understand it.

Having become hopelessly, utterly addicted to the first two seasons of Rick & Morty, I was, as everyone else who was a fan of the show, virtually sweating in anticipation for the long-awaited third season. What a letdown it proved to be - so far. With 6 episodes in however, and only four to go, there's not much hope for recovery.

Rick & Morty captured my imagination, and my praise, with its first two seasons. The adventures were dark, incredibly funny, and made you think about things in ways you had perhaps never done so previously. I, and probably much like everyone else, felt a bit like Morty. A small, insecure, hopelessly average (even sub-par) individual who found themselves at the helm of attempting to steer the seemingly insane whims of mad genius Rick. It was a metaphor for life, in a lot of ways, and it was a perfect equation for an animated comedy. So perfect was the show in fact, that between both seasons, there were only one or two episodes which 'weren't that great', and even they were still excellent by the standards of modern cartoon comedies. The pressure was piling on the creators to match or exceed expectations with a third season installment. It seems they buckled under that pressure.
Aside from an excellent first episode, which premiered on April Fool's and sees Rick escape Galactic Prison and single-handedly destroy both the Galactic Federation and the Council of Ricks (what a badass this guy is), the other five episodes I've seen so far have been... well... boring. Incredibly boring. Not funny in any way, dragging out the 'emotional' family scenes featuring Jerry, Beth and Summer (yawn - like anyone cares about these characters), and uninspired, predictable storylines which wouldn't test the intelligence of a vole. You know what a vole is, Morty? Seriously - there were some episodes of the first season I had to watch twice or even three times to understand everything that was going on. I could probably understand every 'subtlety' of this new season whilst half-watching the show sat on the john.
The whole thing just 'feels' different. Something is off. When checking online for possible answers, there's literally a hate group of Reddit claiming it's due to hiring female writing staff. I'm not going to get into a debate about whether women are funny here, but perhaps the introduction of new staff (with very little writing experience) has upset the balance and made Rick and Morty... well, a bit rubbish. As a superfan of the series, I'll of course watch the rest and see if it redeems itself. So far though, I've been incredibly disappointed and it seems a shadow of its former self.

I think when people speak about Rick and Morty they tend to focus so much on how the show is so amazingly intellectual in terms of ideas, innovation and humor. And i'd agree with them, for the most part.

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have created a comedically rich, nihilistically moral corruption, absurdist tale about a Boy, his family, and their alcoholic genius of a Grandfather who might just be the most shallow creature to ever exist...and its hilarious.... It's almost a dark Back to the future/Doctor Who parody that is as equally funny, as it can be sentimental through a cynical lense. It is a very smart, very humorist show.

But this season, was kinda hollow...The humor felt flat at times, and I found myself cringing at some the more pop culture based jokes. It felt awfully unoriginal at times. Which is strange for a a show like Rick and Morty that has always based itself around the idea of absurdity and intensity. The parodies didn't have the same pay offs as the previous seasons. I wonder if at this point we know the comedic beats, we understand the flow of the show. Something just felt so flat this season. Like it was missing its soul and struggling to find new ways to capture an audience. The jokes where way to on the nose.

I still enjoyed the season regardless. I just hope that season 4 takes in these criticisms and tries to structure itself a little better and maybe take a few steps back to try something a little more different, innovative, and something fresh.

After just having watched yet another mediocre episode of season 3 I'm really confused: Has this brilliant show already run out of ideas after only two seasons? Are the rumors true that they hired these (apparently inexperienced) new writers just for a quota?

Hope there will be a 4th season, also hope it will be better

This season has really picked up momentum and is now confidently hitting it stride. Tales from the Citadel was so tightly executed with multiple fully developed plot lines. Morty's Mindbenders is more thought out and digs deeper than the prior Interdimensional Cable episodes. Pickle Rick was one of the highlights of the series.

Just not what it used to be. There are some good episodes but the overall story arc is ruined completely. The characters no longer behave like real people. It also seems that the show, this year, went more for shock value than actual dark comedy. It isn't a bad show but not a good one, either, after two seasons of being great.

This season of Rick and Morty shifts from the over-the-top high concept, sci-fi adventures to focus more on the family dynamic. While the amount of jokes is certainly lacking when compared to previous seasons, the addition of more serious themes doesn’t detract from the eccentric heart of this show.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm starting to worry that this is the beginning of the end for this series. With the season finale airing last night, We can look back on this season and ask ourselves weather or not this was really worth the wait, and I'm not sure if I can say it was. Now I'm not a long running fan of the show, I was brought in by the April fools day preview, and I watched the first two seasons in the time it took for adult swim to finish up season three. And while I may not have the longest relationship with this show, I can easily agree with the many people who considered the first two seasons of the show some of the best modern television. But that can't be said about season three. Due to a variety of reasons, this season has been the epitome of all of this series' flaws.

Season three had the set goal of being decidedly darker than the previous two, and yet there is no logical reason for this to be the case. (Mild spoilers in this paragraph.) The first episode ends with Jerry and Beth getting a divorce, and while early episodes deal with this topic, the rest of this season is just edgy and dark for no discernible reason. The design philosophy the writing staff has gone for is to just add an uncomfortable moral in every episode, and usually kill off an unnamed kid every now and then just to make you feel sad for a bit. This series has gone from using dark themes for the sake of story telling, to using dark themes to be edgy and rebellious, which leads me to my next topic.

This series has been praised for being unique, and different, and the folks at adult swim have turned that quality from a feat on behalf of their writers, to a bureaucratic business model, where the story isn't written with the intention of being a good story, it's written with the intention of being different, which leads to all sorts of infuriating, and poorly thrown together plot points. Now, the way the last season ended on a cliffhanger, it seemed like the show was finally gearing up for a much larger scale story, but this seemingly season long arc essentially became a two part episode. But that's not terrible, as long as the series is still able to keep providing a good story, then that is forgivable, but... about that.... That whole "We must be different" philosophy has torn apart every remotely interesting part of the series canon. Plot points which seemed like they would matter are thrown aside and ignored in exchange for meaningless episodes with no substance. The series has always liked trolling the audience a bit, but this season reaches a new milestone, featuring some of the most deceptive, misleading, and downright disappointing moments in franchise history. a few bait and switch moments were more entertaining than what was promised, but most of it just came down to showing you something much better, and then giving you nothing.

An issue that has only been a mild deterrence in the past has become a major problem with season three, and that issue is just how much of an overpowered main character rick is. Now, it has always been part of Ricks character dynamic that he can do anything as long as he wants to, but that has gone from an interesting idea to a drama destroying plot device. Rick always wins, and It gets boring seeing him always know the answer to every question, and never being at a loss. Hell, he is even referred to as a god at some points in this season because of just how unstoppable they made him. And Ricks invulnerability isn't just limited to perilous situations, the writers also make sure that he is never wrong about anything either. Even when committing literal murder the series still insists he was right because the people he murdered were "stupid". as previously mentioned, this season is only different so adult swim can market it as different, and part of this artificial innovation is how morality goes from being questioned to frequently being labeled as wrong. This series has gone from exploring the idea of nihilism to embracing it, and forcing it on you, the viewer, with almost every episode having a moral involving how **** life is, and how you're only a "smart person" if you accept that your actions don't matter. It's essentially just a trip to 4 chan but with animation.

And finally, there's just the quality of the episodes themselves this season. Too much of the season was hit or miss. While on one hand, there are two stand out episodes this season which are just some of the best in the series as a whole, There are three clunkers. Especially "Vindicators 3", which is so abysmal it might just be one of the worst cartoons I've ever seen, in this series or otherwise. The other two bad episodes are just poorly written and flawed, and on top of all that, the episodes which aren't amazing or terrible are just okay. Not nearly the quality of seasons one and two.
Every successful TV show eventually hits a wall where it can't keep on going, and I fear this show has hit it's wall very early.

1 star for the one good episode, ironically featuring a character who basically has been kicked off the show. I enjoyed the first season and much of the second, but a large part of what made it enjoyable was the dynamic between the characters - which gets completely destroyed this time around. Suddenly everyone turns into a min-Rick, which is just not interesting. Just as a great sports1 star for the one good episode, ironically featuring a character who basically has been kicked off the show. I enjoyed the first season and much of the second, but a large part of what made it enjoyable was the dynamic between the characters - which gets completely destroyed this time around. Suddenly everyone turns into a min-Rick, which is just not interesting. Just as a great sports team requires role players to do the "dirty work" - the thankless but necessary tasks essential for success - so too does a show need "normal" characters to ground the narrative and provide a foil for the "star" (i.e. Rick). So the innocent, anxious and not particularly intelligent Morty, the cynical but good-hearted slave-to-trends Summer, and the ol' parental unit - ambitious but feeling-boxed-in-by-her-marriage/family Beth and trying-too-hard and not-too-bright Jerry provide fodder for Rick to play with and against.

But now, in our everyone-must-be-special age, "role players" are no longer allowed. Every character must get their own episode, in which they do things completely alien to just about everything we know about them, and the hard work of making it believable is completely absent. You get a picture of a bunch of bored writers in a room taking turns saying "wouldn't it be cool if..." rather than systemically thinking through the organic evolution of the characters (or non-evolution, as the case may be).

And the result is that immersion becomes impossible as the seams in the story show themselves, and various stereotypical agendas of the writers become clear. We are not listening to Rick and Morty speak, but rather California liberals who took their instruction at Pomona far too seriously.

    5) Pickle Rick - Outrageous and yet still down to Earth

Solid (Fun in a way only R&M can be)

    6) Morty's Mind Blowers - I personally vastly prefer this to the Interdimensional cable

    7) Rickmancing the Stone - I didn't like Mad Max as much as everyone else either

Fine (Still happy for the attempt, though not my favorites)

    8) The ABC's of Beth - Definitely the most interesting turn for Beth's character

    9) The Rickchurian Candidate - Which kind of lost itself in the weeds to yet another battle of egos w/ Rick

    10) Vindicators 3 - Maybe I should go back and watch the first 2?

Overall I think Season 3 had more weak points than either of the previous 2, but its highs reached the levels of the best episodes in the series, and w/ The Ricklantis Mixup probably the very highest thus far. If I had to rank it, it'd be:

    1) Season 2
    2) Season 1
    3) Season 3

It remains my favorite show on TV by a wide margin.

The series is shockingly funny, even when it goes into dark/disturbing mode, but moments like these confirmed that there was more going on than a bawdy, violent, nihilistically hilarious riff on science-fiction clichés and scientific principles, built around a character who’s like the Doctor reimagined by Armando Iannucci. ... Rick and Morty has always been one of wildest shows on TV. It’s time to admit that it’s also one of the best.
