A novel twist on a familiar premise, and bound to entice those who can’t get enough of the undead.
-
Through its first three episodes, “Revival” showrunners/writers Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce seem more interested in the impacts of Revival Day — personally, politically and culturally — than the mystery of it all, and that is to the show’s benefit.
-
In adapting Revival for the small screen, Koontz and Boyce dutifully hit all the right dramatic notes while breezing past the heft of its ideas.
-
Revival might not have sufficient bite to leave a mark. But as simply a fun mystery to escape into, familiar enough to be comforting but fresh enough to feel unpredictable, it does what it has to do.
-
While some of its side plots are less compelling, the main mystery, which gradually spools out to cover more of this small town and its eclectic characters, is packed with plenty of intriguing twists and turns to keep viewers hooked.
-
It’s really the cast that helps elevate “Revival,” particularly Scrofano, who carries the entire piece on her resolute shoulders. .... One hopes that the show’s remaining episodes will continue to build on the solid foundation the first stretch serves up.
-
While Revival struggles to distinguish itself as a crime drama, that's hardly a dealbreaker. We're here for its blend of small-town hijinks and cheerfully morbid supernatural mysteries — and, I'd wager, because a lot of Wynonna Earp fans want to see Melanie Scrofano star in another genre show.
-
Revival features a solid cast, though no one gives a particularly standout performance. Similarly, there are several narrative threads in each episode, but the writing and visuals pop.
