Duff, Marsan and Ayling-Ellis are the big names but the charismatic Gurney is a revelation in the lead role, with an intense performance that wavers between volatility and vulnerability.

In many ways, Reunion is a fairly conventional thriller. .... But Gurney is a revelation. He is an effortlessly compelling physical presence, but makes Brennan a mass of delicate layers – volatile, but wrapped in the frustrations of circumstance.

Reunion isn’t an easy watch for a number of reasons – the subject matter is difficult, and the format means full commitment is required. But it is unapologetically itself, and the world it creates is all the more convincing as a result.

Reunion could easily have become “that deaf show”, cart before horse. But this is an excellent four-parter that never lets its own backstory overshadow the enduring demands of good drama.

It is a well-worked thriller, not a pious BBC invocation to eat your greens and spread awareness about disability (although it does that very well). The precise details of Brennan’s crime are deliberately withheld in the drama’s early skirmishes, intensifying the sense of disorientation and nimbly ramping up the intrigue.

While the plot gets a little convoluted, the performances feel real.
