While the subject matter is heavy, Rescue Me is seldom heavy-going. It still makes times to revel in the boisterous camaraderie of its firefighters, and it still takes great advantage of one of the sexiest, funniest casts on television.

The drama can be over the top, and sometimes it feels like one big ego trip for Leary.... But the show is like the comic: imperfect but lovable.

There are no actual fires involved, and several key scenes are played in near-silence. The emotional intensity, though, rips right through the screen.

Rescue Me remains a crazy mix of drama and comedy that's heart-wrenching and hilarious. Can't wait to see how it ends.

What Rescue Me has shined and polished to a high gloss, though, is those scenes of aggressive camaraderie between men. They're smart, funny and utterly realistic in terms of the ways that men relate to each other.

The comic relief we have come to rely on in the macho camaraderie has more of a tinge of gallows humor this season, which isn't to say that Rescue Me feels like a show on its last legs, more like it's nearing its natural (or, given the frequency of Tommy's post-traumatic hallucinations, unnatural) end.

Uneven but irreverent, Rescue Me manages to rescue itself, immersing us in the tumultuous firefighting life that is the reason we watch the show.

Can Rescue Me wrap all this up in the short time left? I hope so, but this episode feels like so much temporizing.

Rescue Me needs rescusing from itself and deliverance will soon come. Until then, fans of the series can enjoy the ride--even if it sometimes feels like a rerun.

After watching the first four episodes of the sixth season back-to-back--an endurance test I don’t recommend--it’s apparent Rescue Me is recycling plots.
