With cinematographer Sophia Constantinou, and a haunting musical score by Laura Karpman and Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum, Kates has created a fact-based profile, but with boldly evocative impressionist strokes that mirror the complexity of Sontag’s life and career.

[Sontag's] personal magnetism is very much part of the story.... This alone makes for a highly watchable film, though Kates also dresses the screen with poetical visual interludes.

Sontag, simply put, was a very interesting person, who fully inhabited some interesting times--which this film captures. But as to that genuine, lasting impact? Who knows: Regarding is so busy trying to capture this busy life, that it never gets around to an answer.

Rather than tackle Ms. Sontag’s ideas or their value head-on, the director, Nancy Kates, continually deflects the discussion along other lines: Ms. Sontag as closeted bisexual, serial heartbreaker, liberal provocateur, narcissist, celebrity, camera subject, Jew, cancer survivor.
