The episodes can feel sentimental and neutered, despite attempts to portray addiction in a multifaceted manner. However, with its quick dialogue and fully realized main character, Recovery Road just might flourish into a series that transcends its early trappings.

If those flashbacks occasionally feel too manipulative or visually overcooked, it’s because the character’s present-day interactions are so visceral and moving. Recovery Road achieves those effective moments by focusing on Maddie. The wonderful surrounding cast of characters adds add some serious depth to the recovery narrative thanks in large part to the solid performances, but this is still a show about one character.

Some of the plots travel in expected directions, and you won’t mistake this brightly lit show for something on AMC, but there’s sincerity and some grit to Recovery Road.

There are frequently times when the production comes across like an episode of late-period 7th Heaven. But at its best, Recovery Road does a good job of capturing the complex web of both emotions and actions that are taken in the journey to sobriety suggested by the show title.

This one’s preachy, overly dramatic and everything you would expect from a show like this.

Addiction issues are serious, and there's plenty of drama to be mined from that idea. However, "Recovery Road" doesn't feel like the show to tackle that. The pilot was dry, poorly constructed, and didn't do a lot to embody the subject matter well. Full Review »
