Just gave this show a shot. it has some truly fantastic elements and some great comedy woven in but, sadly, the lead just can’t keep up with the supporting cast. Next to world-class actors like Hiam Abbass and truly talented comics like Mohammed Amer, Ramy himself is as flat and milquetoast as an unbuttered pancake. Next to world-class actors like Hiam Abbass and truly talented comics like Mohammed Amer, Ramy himself is as flat and milquetoast as an unbuttered pancake. The episode featuring Hiam’s character as a lonely housewife was excellent and is the highlight of the show and season. I would even say the episode that features Ramy’s onscreen sister who is seemingly more charming, likable, and smarter than Ramy is, was also the highlight of the season.

The show tries too hard to channel Master of None which is why I presume Hulu picked it up, but Ramy is just not as cool, charming, or even funny as Aziz is, as you'll find yourself more wincing and shaking your head at his behavior and often stupid decisions than laughing or agreeing with him, as he is not a likable or sympathetic character by any means. Hopefully, Ramy changes that and steps it up for Season two.

It’s initially a slow burn, but through it all, Ramy consistently subverts and redirects expectations, and doesn’t hide from tough contradictions, such as Muslim relatives who admire Trump or Ramy’s unsuccessful attempts to abstain for Ramadan.

Ramy is an earnest exploration of Muslim identity that at times runs toward saccharine; one gets the impression that the show, mindful that the mere act of being Muslim in America is provocative, has carefully neutered itself of anger. But Ramy makes up for this with an unflinching, transgressive portrait of American Islam, one that holds both its traditions and its deviations from tradition in the same embrace. With squirming detail, Ramy pays attention to the bodies of its characters.

The deeper explorations of Shadi and Maysa’s lives are welcome, but they’re too brief. The season might have had even greater impact had it focused more on developing its supporting characters, though one imagines Ramy will make room for that in its inevitable second season. But that’s a minor complaint, as the weight of Ramy’s journey is both significant and unforgettable.
