Ridley Scott does no wrong. He helped produce Blade Runner 2049 with Harrison Ford which was also masterfully shot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The most interesting series I've seen for a while. I can understand that many are irritated by the constant turns the series takes. Always when you think you know now which direction it takes, it's not happening.

Basically, it's a series about the primal sources of religion and civilization. And it is a very smart idea that the protagonists that are declared atheists, one of them even an android, go on a spiritual journey, while the believers remain passive followers.

Some Dune references are quite ovbious. And I can imagine that it goes further in this direction in seasons to come. The ambiguity that the series keeps is its strenght. I'm very curious for the second season.

For me this show is 10 out of 10. I can understand the negative reviews, because this show is not for everyone, but if you're a sci-fi fan, this show will open a new dimension for you. Can't wait for 2nd season.

Most creative original sci-fi since interstellar. The story is amazing. The world building and vision of the future is not like anything I've seen. I didn't think there'd be any good sci-fi for awhile. Character development is also a priority in Scott's story I was invested in each of their motives. Pleasant surprise, considering Lovecraft put me to sleep.

Update, Just finished episode 9. Story is unlike anything I've seen. It's innovative in its story telling and reverberates like a human heart in its complexity and emotion, in each of its characters. I can not tell what is going to happen next and I'm anxious to find out because the way it presents each character's journey, how they have one perspective that evolves in ways that draw you in and make you care for them. Transcendant in its ideas of religion, reality, existentialism, what makes you human or alive, and the value of life. This is what I hoped prometheus 2 would be, but unlike Alien Covenant, this delivers. You're in for such a treat if you're starting at episode 1.

If you are interested in science fiction series, Raised by Wolves is a unique series in this genre. But it is too early to judge and there are many questions to answer but what is there is that we must be ready to see an exciting work.

TL;DR- If this is what Ridley wanted to focus on since Promethus how did these concepts get shoved into the his 'Alien/Xenomorph' universe ?? This whole season had far more interesting and amazing concepts, acting performances and atmosphereTL;DR- If this is what Ridley wanted to focus on since Promethus how did these concepts get shoved into the his 'Alien/Xenomorph' universe ?? This whole season had far more interesting and amazing concepts, acting performances and atmosphere than both of his recent Movies, even if the concepts are not novel the amalgamation of the sci-fi concepts and the bigger picture is quite the experience.

The Good

Donno if it was Ridley's insistence or the Producers who forced Scott to retroactively try and force the Xenomorph lore into his Android/Existentialism aspect which was clearly what he wanted to deal with. His movies were always an example of stellar cinematography which is one of the best parts of the show. The character performances were absolutely enthralling and engaging from start to finish, this is supported with really well written character interactions and character dialogue.

Being one of the main driving forces of this universe the show does really well to delve into both sides of Religion and Atheism, by both I mean the Positive and Negative successfully making sure this does not get too preachy on either side.
The twist of Androids encapsulating Adam and Eve, Mother Father, Married Couple was fascinatingly portrayed by both Salim and Amanda with the best performances in the show by the duo. Almost all of the children in their performances were well done and barring a few minor details here and there were believable and understandable.

The Bad

A few times I felt a pang of irritation rising up in me, everytime this was because of some link to the Xenomorph universe like the helmet being similar in design to the engineer helmet. The cinematography of the opening episode having similarities to Promethus which has been pointed out by many. And I almost lost it when I thought there was going to be a chest burster scene but thankfully it did not happen.

I am also a part of hate train as the mishmash of Promethus and Alien Covenant felt like everything good was overshadowed by bad and oddly disconnected.
Either way but I am glad Scott finally has an outlet for his passions again since this was quite a breath of fresh air from a Science Fiction standpoint.

Raised by Wolves is quite a refreshing watch on a whole even if parts of the whole are not anything new but the way the narrative is constructed is Ridley Scott at his best.

I came to the review board thinking I would see praises but to my dismay, the masses have disliked this one. In my opinion, it is an extraordinary show. The film reminds me of the daydreams I used to have while trying to read Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles". I was too young to read the book properly but it did ignite my imagination. I am sad now thinking the poor reviews will kill this series. Please WarnerMedia, HBO Max, and anyone else who is involved in making this production possible, please do not cancel this series. And, if you must cancel it, do it justice by finishing the story. Expand

Putting aside the impeccable acting of Amanda Collin that carries a big part of the show, the production team managed to create a world that feels completely foreign and new even though it uses a lot of elements that we're all familiar with at this point. Although personally I find that one of the most intriguing aspects of the story is the challenging interplay of the spiritual/mythological and the scientific. Which, ironically seems to be what irks a lot of folks, I find those reactions distasteful. I can safely say it has earned its place in my top favorite TV series of all time. Expand

It grasps with pretty heavy social issues such as faith (in "Sol") vs atheism (there's no in-between for agnostics, etc) and associated trust or not, rights of androids, androids exhibiting emotions and even technologically capable of childbirth (sort of), whether androids have souls or not, self-governance without law enforcement, etc. The producers do a good job of not taking sides, so unlike sooooo many other series, this isn't your typical Hollywood Leftist propaganda, nice. The cast are all unknowns which helps to sell the alienation of other worlds. Amanda Collin stars as the android called "Mother" and her character's manner and voicing easily reminds me of "Queen Kane" in the series "See". But "Mother" can levitate and travel fast that way emitting a body-destroying shriek so that's fun. The pacing is kinda slow but it's deliberate, IOW there are little wasted moments. Normally I'd want to FF through slow parts but not with this one. The season finale is pretty bonkers and hooks you good for S02. Expand

Future humanity has split into two warring factions: atheists and mithraists. Both have little to do with their real world counterparts, but are recognizable nonetheless. The mithraists (arguably) won the religious war—that precedes the startFuture humanity has split into two warring factions: atheists and mithraists. Both have little to do with their real world counterparts, but are recognizable nonetheless. The mithraists (arguably) won the religious war—that precedes the start of the show—by deploying advanced weapons of death and destruction, called necromancers; state-of-the-art androids, equipped with the ability to kill all biological lifeforms in an instant. However, the war left earth uninhabitable and so both the atheists and mithraists sent colonists to another habitable planet, Kepler-22b.

The story initially focuses on two atheist-sent androids, Mother and Father. They arrive at Kepler-22b—years before the colonist ark of the mithraists does—in a small spacecraft, equipped with only some basic necessities. They’ve brought six human embryos with them, which they are tasked to grow into a new atheist society. Unfortunately, the living conditions on the new planet are harsh and as the story slowly unravels Kepler-22b appears to harbour more and more dark secrets. The inevitable arrival of the mithraist colonists is yet another obstacle in the androids’ mission.

Raised by Wolves is filled with symbolism, mysticism, and all kinds of other interesting constructs. It relies heavily on themes such as religion vs. atheism, parenthood, humanity, and identity—yet it wavers constantly in the direction it takes these themes. Raised by Wolves is as much a sci-fi series as it is a mystery series. This is especially true for the second season, during which the story evolves into something increasingly unfathomable, but also feels slightly more unhinged. This can be interesting, if you don’t mind the growing mystery without getting much answers, but for many viewers this might also be off-putting. In this respect the show reminds me a lot of LOST, and I both fear and hope that it will eventually wrap up just as open-ended, like LOST did.

The cinematography, acting and directing are all on par with what you may expect from a production this size and of this genre. None of it is groundbreaking, but it’s all pleasant enough. Stylistically I liked the first season better than the second, although the fact that both seasons are really different in tone is also a strength. I’m curious where the showrunners will take their story in the coming seasons!

I actually desperately wanted to love this show. The aesthetic is 9.5/10. If you like the Aliens franchise, this will be right up your alley.

The problem is that the showrunners went too far with the weird, convoluted storytelling and the artistic license. There's nothing wrong with complexity, but they went too far. I see some people negging this show as "thinking it's smart." I think that's a fair assessment. This show was and is high concept. But that doesn't mean you have to forgo sensible storytelling.

As far as concept and art goes, it may be one of the greatest of all time. But what killed it was its pretentiousness and convoluted nature.
