Pacific Rim: The Black’s emphasis on its brother and sister leads provides a specific point of view that’s deeply, earnestly engaging. There’s a danger that its forays into Lost-esque mysteries will derail from this, but hopefully it won’t stray too far from its strength, which is, surprisingly enough, hopelessness. Without the chest-rattling boom of every seismic Jaeger footstep, or deafening din of a Kaiju shriek, the series packs less of a wallop. That said, the upside to this endeavor is over-the-top action that even Del Toro’s CGI magicians couldn’t quite pull off—a trade-off that makes Johnson and Kyle’s series maybe not a grand success, but certainly a worthwhile addition to the franchise. Pacific Rim: The Black certainly has a few missteps here and there, with some wonky animation, but it’s a great, world-expanding look at concepts and monsters that audiences who loved the original film can easily fall in love with. Opting for anime storytelling is the cherry on top, as it offers a medium that feels just right for the franchise’s lore. Read full review

Don't watch much anime, but gave this a shot since I watched the movies. Binge watched it, and would watch another season of it.

Clearly an American written Anime, where convienence and illogical story beats are the prime elements. How a young girls with NO training are just as qualified as a young man WITH training, or why upgrading their mech never occurs to them at multiple points in the story when they are modular and instantly integrate, are just some of the issues. The cell shaded Kaiju and FX are another, as they clash with the much higher quality anime hand shading, and contrast in a very unflattering way. But the greatest downfall is the video game quality story where dangers are scaled to what the main characters are capable of handling, with both a Mysterious Stranger to save them (that convienence I mentioned earlier), as well as what appears to be an Akira type character (foreshadowed to heck and back again).

The one raging question is why did all the tech have to be nuked in project Black? To keep the Kaiju from using it?!? Either that was terribly explained, or is just there for contrived difficulty. I am guessing the latter.… Expand
