The Starz Channel has not been notable for very high production values in its televised series shows. Things have taken a major turn for the better. My wife has read every one of the "Outlander" books and she approached this show with an extraordinary degree of suspicion, expecting a cheesy cartoon of the books she so enjoys. She is now a believer in this show and recommends it to all of Gabaldon's fans and to everyone else too.

I love what the director did with "The Wedding." It captured the anticipation and the intimacy that I felt in the book but did it in a different way and it worked beautifully! I love this show. I love Sam Heughan- he is different as the Jamie I imagined while reading but he has definitely stepped in as "my Jamie." He is strong, loyal and very sexy. I have also fell in love with Graham McTavish as Dougal. I love the pace of the show and I look forward to savoring each chapter of the show. Let me be honest. I watched the first episode of this show because it was something my husband was interested in. It slightly captured my attention and then I think I fell asleep. I found the second time around, watching it for myself and no one else (add to that, the fact my husband has a tendency to talk throughout the entire episode) I really enjoyed, even more so when I got to the fourth episode. Completely obsessed with this show! I thought game of thrones was addictive and now I have another fantasy/historical drama in which to absorb myself.

This is an excellent show. The acting is very good and the storyline is interesting and, I believe, reflective of the relationship between England and Scotland during this period in history.

I hope this show will continue for several seasons but am not sure it can continue past the battle between the British and the Scots.

Brilliant mini-series. Great acting. Kudos to leading actress (she's Irish, would have never guessed) and the actor that plays as Dougal. Great music score. Despite being a series that , in my opinion, is focused more to women I've got to say I love it. Looking forward to season 2.

In episode 3 you left out the tender part of Claire showing Jamie the extent of his scars on his back. Her touch was loving and a hint of what was to be between them. Where was the heartwarming connection between them. When I read the book I had a warm feeling, but the episode left me feeling nothing in this scene.

This series is starting to warm up to me. After 3 episodes, I can say I am hooked to know what hold for Claire's future. As a sci-fi fan, I was expecting fast build up but it was a bit slow but tastefully done. I have never read the book so I am expecting the element of surprises along the way.

Everything in this series is of very high quality, especially the writing, the characters, settings and actors. It's like literally watching a book rather than reading it. Sure, it is slow paced but after watching two episodes, you just crave to know and see more about this epic story.

The theme song is just wonderful and intoxicating, a great choice for the show that it is. The pilot set everything up nicely, at least the first part of things, we got to know Claire's life in 1945 before diving deep in 1743's Scotland.

The characters and the plots are slowly introduced and developed that they quickly feel real. The slow pace the show took created a solid base to amp up the drama, relate to the characters, and set up the era. I felt like with each episodes I learned a little bit more about Scottish culture. The voice over stayed throughout the season but I didn't mind it. It was on point, adding to the information that the images and/or the great performances were giving. It also made boring shots (people walking around, landscape shots - however beautiful they were) more interesting.

The show is full of little references, I did not expect to find e.g. "When you eliminate the impossible whatever remain, however improbable, must be the truth." a quote that many of you have heard in Sherlock.

The pilot's development on Claire's life in 1945 made even more sense once they started to use flashbacks. I don't know if the flashbacks would have made any sense if they hadn't spent a good portion of the pilot in 45. Claire strong, pigheaded AND annoying at times. Jack Randall is amazing, powerful, which is even more impressive when you compare the actor’s performance as Clair’s husband in 1945.

The further we went with the show, the more riveting, and beautiful Outlander was. I was giddy and excited to watch the show. Outlander was a little bit all over the place when it came to categorize it, it was a bit sappy, cheesy but it also got dark, I mean really DARK, which was a direction I didn’t exactly expect. Not having any spoilers from the books I thought I was imaging Jack Randall's proclivities but I wasn’t! It made the show all the more sweater because the creative team was not afraid to get into the sadism, get gritty, and graphic. It got so disturbing but the way it was edited made it bearable.

Outlander is an emotionally charged and riveting new show, arguably one of the best that came out this year. @wornoutspines

FANTASTIC!!!! I have not loved a series in years like this one. This has got to be by far one of the most accurate (by the book) series in the history of TV series, movies, mini-series etc. It's romance, sci-fi, history and SCOTTISH MEN in kilts and it's so very realistic. Having read all of Diana Gabaldon's books in the Outlander series, I have been waiting for 20 years for someone to take on the challenge of adapting them for TV. To say that I am "thrilled" with the result is an understatement--long-time fans are being rewarded with a series that is remaining very true to the source texts. While some may find the pace slow and cumbersome, I find it refreshing: producer Ron Moore has turned away from the pitfall of trying to cram every episode full of action. Those unfamiliar with the books may not like the use of voice-over narration by Claire in some places, but since the entire story is told from her point of view, it is absolutely essential that we understand what is going through her mind.

I am very pleased with the casting: Sam Heughan (Jamie) and Caitriona Balfe (Claire) have such terrific chemistry on the screen that the viewer can practically see the sparks fly. I was initially skeptical of casting Tobias Menzies as both Frank and Black Jack Randall, but he makes it work. And Graham McTavish as Dougal is phenomenal--one look at his eyes and you know to step carefully around him.

One feature of the production that intrigues me is the use of the Gaelic language without subtitles. It is used just enough to make the viewer feel the disorientation of Claire as she tries to navigate this new reality in which she finds herself. The Gaelic conversations are short enough that the viewer can follow the meaning of what is being said without being so long as to cause the viewer to 'tune out'.

Fans of Gabaldon's books will be hooked on the show as they see the story brought to life (even if their vision of the characters was different from what is portrayed); those who have never read the books should prepare for their newest addiction!

Second, restraint. The show is okay with having characters' motivations be unclear, or having unsubtitled conversations. Things take time to happen. It doesn't have to be in your face every week.

Where it struggles are in some eye-rolling decisions by the main character, who seems to vacillate and complain endlessly. I don't know the source material, so I can only say it irks me. But given the creative staff behind the show and the substance of most of the narrative thusfar, I'm willing to believe it goes somewhere good.

While it is a little slow towards the beginning I trust that the show will pick up the pace like the book does after the (spoiler Marriage of Claire and Jamie) Having read the book I know it is about to get very good very quickly but I will then have to wait until 2015.
Still it is the best show STARZ has done since Boss and Party Down.

There a couple of very interesting scenes coming up which will be very interesting to see how they do it. The pace is slow but maybe necessary in order build the world of Outlander.
I presume the many female fans were attracted to the books and now the show because of Jamie. For me one of the reasons I like watching the show is Claire played by the very attractive Caitriona Balfe. People were worried that only women would tune in but women have been watching male shows for years and men enjoy watching female lead shows. One of my favourite tv shows is Orange is the New Black and almost entirely female cast.
Very good show those put off by the slow pace I urge to stick with it just a little longer it will pay off I promise.

Unlike so many others I never had the privilege of reading the books and in all honesty I don't really consider that a loss. The story is so well told and the atmosphere so palpable that it draws you in and captures the imagination. While the show had a strong first episode it was really the second episode that sealed the deal. The depiction of life in the Scottish highlands feels authentic and the actors, whom are mostly unknown, completely inhabit their characters.

From reading the comments I understand that some of the characters are not aesthetically identical to their novel counterparts. This was enough to warrant lower scores for some reviewers. I find this puzzling as the show stands so well on it's own. Who cares if someones hair was longer in the book? Does it really detract from the experience?

I would have given the show a 10 if not for the somewhat cynical side of me believing that nothing is ever perfect. I also have a personal gripe with the fair amount of nudity. While the nudity itself doesn't offend me, I felt it was forced in a bid to compete with shows like Game of Thrones and the like. It's unnecessary to have nudity only for the sake of nudity. Claire's expletive of choice also feels forced and rarely comes across as a natural reaction to a given situation. In the end these concerns are minimal in the bigger scheme of things and should not deter anyone from enjoying this masterpiece.

So far I love it all - the cast, the set & art dec, historical accuracy, costume design, direction, the pace and most of all we can really feel the chemistry building between Claire & Jamie so I expect the screen to get a little steamy this fall!

The only curiosity I have is how/why/when the change of Claire's costume - post henge took place? I guess I missed the part when Jack removed her belt, skirt and blouse leaving her in nothing but her 'slip'/'shift'? I'm a continuity and period costume design buff.

She came through the henge with her 40's ensemble but I didn't notice the belt and change of neck line until she stood up following a roll through the leaves down a hill. If anyone can clarify this for me I'd be most appreciative otherwise I will just wait for a repeat as I expect the entire series with be worth watching a second or third time!!

I'm just so happy to have a TV series that appeals to my demographic. The CSI types and Vampire shows that are so popular right now are completely lost on me so I am really grateful to have something to watch this season.

The Starzs series could have done without the graphic violence in this episode. Jamie's whipping was handled well in the previous episodes. It was pivotal to the novel, but to subject the viewers to the prolonged violence again, just took away from a brilliant story. Diana Gabaldon should be more insistent over how the producers interpret her books.

Sam Heughan, Graham McTavish (along with the assemble) give the only believable performances, although I believe Dougal is only 45 years old in the book and he looks much older on screen. What has gotten me in a froth is the casting of Caitriona Balfe as Claire. In the book Claire is 5"6, buxom with golden eyes and whiskey hair. Caitronia Balfe is 5"10, emaciated with two sticks for legs and unattractive breasts. Every time she says "Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ," I cringe. I feel like she is playing Cate Blancett playing Claire. I've heard she doesn't have much acting experience which really sounds crazy given that that she has the lead. Lastly, those voiceovers are so flat it makes me want to turn the sound and just watch the pretty scenery.
Tobias Menzies is a fine actor. I saw him in "Rome" and thought he was fabulous. That being said he doesn't fit what Frank is supposed to look like but he is good enough actor to get past the physical miscast. Just to recap and close, I understand casting a new comer if she really looks the part but, Caitronia Balfe neither looks the part or can act. I suggest she try a few more lessons

The only reason I didn't give this show a 10 is that I think it will take a bit more time to see the cast truly gel together. These are big roles for leads without significant acting credentials. I believe they are coming along nicely and we will see them nominated along side of some of our greats.

While having the body of a tall 12 year old boy works for the runway, it looks like **** for this story. There is no depth to her portrayal of Claire I actually found myself rooting against her hoping the redcoats would just throw her irritating ass in a dungeon. I would hope they recast that character because I think the show would be better off if Balfe was replaced.
Fitz was great casting as is Jamie.
The costumes...ehhh you can tell the wife of the shows 'runner' was at the helm of those nothing especially noteworthy or that a first year art student couldn't come up. But lets all just **** over ourselves because it's Ron's behemoth wife doing them.
The scenery is stunning...Scotland is truly one of the most stunning places on earth so they are doing a great job there.
Not sure I am going to stick with this as Balfe's portrayal of Claire makes me not care about the story...recast!!!!

I had several reservations about the casting, but put my faith in Diana and Ron not to let bad acting ruin all of their hard work and passion! I hate to say that my intuition was right. Furthermore I'm sad to realize that for as talented as Ron Moore is, there has definitely been something lost in translation between the book (which is extremely compelling) and the show (which truly is not)! I never wanted to put the book down! The show leaves no hook at the end, nothing to grab me in to see what will happen next. I will continue to watch the show and have my fingers crossed that it will continue on, because there is something wonderful about seeing the books I have loved for so many years come to life. And there is absolutely no denying that the scenery and sets are extraordinary, better than any full-budget Hollywood movie! They are a big part of what has pulled me back each week. But the truth is I'm no longer excited about the show, I am merely watching for the vague amusement of it. I had my husband and older female roommate excited to watch the pilot with me, and both have trailed off. Neither one of them wanted to watch beyond the second episode that I forced them to sit through! As far as specific feedback: 1) The pacing of the show is PAINFULLY slow. I fully understand this book could not be fit into a 2 hour movie. But 16 episodes is too, too many! As critic Tim Goodman said, "In many ways, this is a story well and thoroughly told but with almost none of the smart pacing of similarly dense fictions like Game of Thrones." SO TRUE. 2) Cat as Claire: First off, she is way too soft. When she gets particularly upset, she breaks into a whiney, cracking voice. Not cunning, not quick on her toes, not convincingly witty. Just… not. And yes, her waifish figure DOES matter!! A lot! She should have gained some weight for the show. Why not? Lots of actors do. All it does is add to her overall flimsiness. She looks like a strong breeze would knock her over. I want so badly to like her, but she is not my beloved Claire! And yeah, as others have said, her J.H.R. Christ's are painful to witness. She doesn't understand the phrase or its application whatsoever. 3) Sam as Jamie: Overall, he's doing an EXCELLENT job, way beyond my expectations! He is very charming and definitely holding his own in the role. However, I feel he is a bit too flirty with Claire. I don't believe for ONE SECOND that he is a virgin!! They didn't get that right. He lacks the innocence needed to be truly as endearing as Jamie. 4) Tobias as Frank: Major blah factor. I like his look, but had I not read the books, I wouldn't understand a word he said!!! SO mumbly, and SO monotone especially when talking history (supposedly, his greatest PASSION). As for the "chemistry" between him and Claire, there was none. She clearly loves him, but he seems to merely be tolerating her. I get that there is a disconnect between them due to distance and war. But there still needed to be passion tying them together! Boo. 5) Tobias as Jack Randall: Completely laughable!! Sorry to say it but it's true! That guy wouldn't hurt a fly. Between Randall and all of the clansmen, I have NOT ONCE, since the season began, honestly feared for Claire's safety or well-being. And that is really sad. 6) Lotte as Geillis: She has the potential, and the look, and the general idea. But holy OVER-ACTING, Batman!!!! I can barely stomach her performance. We are not supposed to know so much about her, so early on! Her evil is supposed to sneak up on us, like in the book. She is trying WAY too hard to be mysterious, and the directors aren't catching it which is especially concerning/disappointing! Also, 7) Laura as Jenny: WTH?!? Jenny is a FIGHTER, even as a young girl she wouldn't have taken crap from anyone! Yes, she would have been forced into subservience as a woman in those times. But she would not have been so doe-eyed and wimpy about it. She would have had her chin out and had a very willful demeanor. How could the directors have possibly gotten that wrong? I'm just a little confused how certain things could have been SO misinterpreted, especially when it has such a negative effect on the overall feeling of the story. :( So yeah… lots of good things I could say about the show as well, including many other actors cast well and doing great work. But it's nice to leave some honest and anonymous feedback. I'd be skinned alive for saying any of this on FB! Love you Diana! Expand

I found myself wanting to go back to reading the book. The actor who plays Jamie does play just right and will probably the only reason I watch the rest of the series. Not to mention he's easy on the eyes. I just came back from Scotland and I'm not seeing enough of the great scenery in this show yet, either. It would be an improvement if they added subtitles during the Gaelic exchanges. Even most people in Scotland wouldn’t understand.
If you haven't read the book, read it. It's definitely better, but also slow, but you get more of the travelog aspect of Gabaldon's work. If you want shows with Scottish scenery watch the TV series Monarch of the Glen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a tedious show! This is supposed to be a sci-fi/historical drama, but this far the only drama that happend ... actually, really nothing dramatic has happened apart form Claire being blasted back to the 1700's. Yes, there was the wedding and the midseason finale, but those aren't the big plot twists I was hoping for. The story seems to be going nowhere and after the 8th episode I really don't care what will happen.
I have seen a good amount of tv series, but this is by far the most boring and tedious show I've seen in a long time. I could rant on and on and point out everything that I think is bad about Outlander, but I'll get to the point immediately and just list them. (Obviously beware of spoilers!!)

    Bad things about Outlander:
    - the annoying voice overs that ruin the fun of figuring things out yourself
    - Claire is a strong woman and the show has every intention of pointing that out at every given chance
    - it has taken this show 8!! episodes to show us what Frank has been up to since Claire has gone missing
    - the opening song, but why has everything about this show got to be so literal and obnoxious (including the theme song)
    - nothing happens!!! (there's an episode where Claire and the Scottish gang go out to collect taxes, literally)
    - Claire's constant outrage about the medical treatment in the 1700's (what did she expect really?)
    - Outlander doesn't play all its cards quickly, but there's such a thing as too much foreplay (see: sexual tension between Claire and Jamie). Also the payoff is not really rewarding.

    Good things about Outlander
    - good music by Bear McReary (except for the opening song)
    - great scenery
    - I haven't read the books so I don't know where the story's headed. This might be the only thing that motivated me to stick with Outlander till the midseason finale.

Because the Claire character is so hard to love the relationship with Jamie is just flat and is just about having sex to just get off, no passion.

I do appreciate the decision to not add subtitles for the Gaelic within the show, as it puts the viewer in the same position as Claire who doesn't speak Gaelic. The acting from Sam Heughan really carries the show, and the rest of the main assemble does a fine job. The overall production quality is good. With mystical stories, eulogies of historical factual excerpts, solicited sexual encounters and a fortune teller/druid spewing tales of a world of wonderment and adventure and an ensuing disjointed lifeline is awaiting for the nurse.

What follows is a blandest foray of circumstances that catapults the nurse into a different century and the story unfolds as she touches one of the ancient stone circles and suddenly all isn’t as it seems.

It is just not as interesting as Sleepy Hollow as the lead actress wavering accent and combined vulnerability and stroppiness masks her lack of commanding status. Maybe an older actress would have been more compelling in handling her hostile environment that she is now aligned. I feel it would have been better as a radio play although we would miss out on the gorgeous visuals of the Scottish countryside.

Overall it’s cheap and tacky similar to Salem and developing into Catherine Cookson/Mills & Boon romantic bile. If you watch it without expectation and you may like it.

If I was going to be absolutely technical I'd say that Dougal is actually supposed to be a bit younger, with more hair and a handsome face. What is the most atrocious casting by far is Caitriona Balfe as Claire, who is the focal point of the whole story and who is supposed to be the strongest character. In the book Claire is 5"6, buxom, and feisty. She is supposed to have light brown hair and light brown eyes. I thought that because she was so far off from all of that being 5"10, stick thin, dark haired, green eyed and an Irish supermodel that she must be an excellent actress, but sadly that was not the case. Her performance was lackluster and failed to bring the character of Claire to life. Every time she said, "Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ," I cringed not from the use of the expletive, but because it sounded forced and unnatural. You can clearly hear the Irish roots in her voice, which half the time sounds very monotone and almost bored particularly in the narratives. The man chosen to play Frank and Jack Randall, Tobias Menzies was also another complete train wreck. Frank Randall is supposed to be delicately handsome in an almost feminine way, which is supposed to contrast with Jamie's obviously masculine and ruggedly handsome character. Tobias Menzies maybe a decent actor, but I'm sorry he definitely doesn't fit the bill in that way, and also the makeup job they did for his ancestor and counter part Black Jack Randall was so terrible that I laughed the first time I saw it, and every time afterwards. It looked like they just smudged a bunch of dirt on his face, in attempt to make him look more dashing and slightly different. (They did not succeed) And then there's the chemistry or should I say lack of chemistry between Claire and Frank, which they tried to counteract by adding unnecessary sex scenes. What makes the story so great is that the characters are so dimensional and tangible in the book. None of that came across in this first episode, it was unbelievable and felt flat. Despite their large budget the whole production had a cheap look and feel to it. Needless to say I was very disappointed, but will keep watching in the hopes that maybe Balfe will get better and everything else will get better. (I doubt it though) Expand

One of the best adaptations of book source material ever. The first half of the season seemed slowly paced to get to know the characters and historical setting, but the second half has turned into a roller coaster of emotions. Perfect casting (and chemistry), great writing, costuming, and beautiful scenery. Kudos all around!

Jamie is EVERYTHING to the story and while I think they cast a fine actor in Sam Heugan, I do not think he comes close to being able to sustain the kind of charisma, strength, gregariousness, intensity and masculinity that the character is imbibed with; that we as the reader have been knocked over the head with!. I'm sure they had a battle in casting but really....the part for Jamie is a total shame. The actor cast does not have exude the 'wise beyond his years' nor the command of a room. The books go on and on and on and on.....about Jamie's character and this actor doesn't have it. That brings me to your site, if Jamie doesn't have the content, surely they could have cast someone with the height and breadth of the man they describe!! Surely they could have invested a bit into colouring his hair!!! I mean if I read ONE more line about the various tones of red and the shocking swatch atop his tall standing crown! The Beauty department has the ability to, at least, give him that to work with since he appears only a bit taller than "Old Claire". I don't really mind "Old Claire" although I find her voice a bit grating....I would watch her but I think you have presented us with SO many better physical options for 'Jamie' that I am totally confused as to WHY on earth Diana Gabaldon would have allowed them to so miscast 'Jamie". So sad because some of the other cast is great and the Production Design is FANTASTIC as if the Wardrobe department. Period Drama is the most difficult and to then live up to this beloved series of books....well it was a tough task and it seems they have really tried by hiring some astute professionals. Too bad the most important element for the show, is for me, a deal breaker and an epic fail. Expand

I didn't like the pacing - it felt as though there were a lot of idle moments and episodes could have been shorter. The abundance of sex scenes came across as unnecessary sometimes or even silly. I also failed to grow attached to most recurring characters, except for the two regulars Claire and Jamie; and even that took a fairly long time.

Now on the positive experiences: I think the 3 main actors did a good job, if not consistently. The art direction and the costumes made the series very pleasing to watch, but what really impressed me was the atmospheric and sometimes even catchy soundtrack. I liked the grounded approach of the fantasy side of the story, even though I still want answers for the questions they raised. Additionally, the two final episodes were very powerful in my opinion, however hard it was to watch.

Finally, I liked it and had a pretty good time watching. Would probably not re-watch anytime soon, though. 7.4/10

It’s based on the ‘Outlander series’ written by Diana Gabaldon, and strictly follows the books -- and doesn’t take any wild turns from its source material. It’s a beautifully directed show that’s highly realistic due to its big focus on history and location shooting. History comes real and it feels like a totally different world. Characters come alive in this 1700s -- they give you this inside to how it was to live in this, to us -- strange world. Its vast focus on this is a major plus -- but can, for some, be its greatest “meh-factor”. The plot is interesting, got exciting revelations -- but it can be draggy. The plot takes its time to develop, but when it does it’s a great one! The characters do on the other hand not take long to feel attachment to. Just the realistic chemistry, extensive ardor and the splendid character depth. Wow! Add a never seen before antagonist and a love/hate relationship with the protagonist, just wow! Our main character Claire Randall is a wonder. Expositions are told in a fascinating way through her -- and the story firmly follows her, one step at a time. Yes; lack of plot development is a fact -- and on a personal level is this the show's greatest problem. But other than that; well -- it’s almost flawless.

It's historically ridiculous in many parts. The witchcraft business is nonsense. Because when the English and Scottish Parliaments united in 1707 they outlawed witchcraft trials.

It's also incredibly redundant. They kept doing far-fetched things to put Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in danger. The "damsel in distress" thing was overdone way past the point of absurdity. I may be done with this thing after the first season. Because I'm sick of the "oh, she's danger, now she's captured, now she's rescued, rinse and repeat. I was wondering just how many times she was going to be taken prisoner by different people in the first season. I actually lost count. It was like five or six times. She's almost raped constantly, was even almost burned at the stake. It's ridiculous how much they overdo that. And why are they always, always traveling? Her husband probably tells 50 people "i have a price on my head." Why would anybody really with a price on his head keep telling people that? And wouldn't he might think about staying with the protection of his Laird instead of constantly traveling the countryside and dragging his wife along with a price on his head? She was also wanted by the British. There really is no logical or important reason for them to be traveling like that. It was completely insane. They rarely explain why they are always on the move like gypsies and why that is even necessary. But then, unnecessary and completely illogical travel was essential to the overdone "damsel in distress" nonsense.

Claire's husband Jaime (Sam Heughan) gets some camera time and character development. But rarely does such a big production with a big cast revolve so dominantly around one actor as it does in this production. If I were other actors in this I'd wonder when I was finally going to get a line. Because if you use a stop watch, you might find that in all of Season One you can't go even 90 seconds without seeing Balfe's face close-up on the screen. She is absolutely dominant in scenes and dialog. So much so that it really prevents any other characters from being developed. If it doesn't work in a plot line directly involved with Balfe, they character doesn't get dialog or scenes. I can't remember anything I've ever watched like it. She's a scene hog, a dialog hog, and a camera hog. Was her husband directing or something? It reminds me of the kid in high school on the yearbook staff who was assigned to take candid photos of students for the yearbook. And every photo he submits is one of his girlfriend. She just doesn't put her face on the screen in every scene. She bares it all constantly. I think I saw her breasts twenty times in the first season. There's a ridiculous amount of obligatory sex. An unnecessary and excessive amount. You see Caitriana Balfe naked so much you can practically memorize every contour of her body and count the fine hairs on her behind. I've seen her hard nipples so many times i have their exact shape in my head. It's like they thought they were making soft porn.

It is remarkable that they give this much face time on camera to a woman with such a limited range of expression. She's got only a couple looks. Her "mona lisa" look which is kind of solemn and mournful. She has that on about 80 per cent of the time. An unhappy scowl is another. You think if she smiles her face might break. Can't the lead character laugh in this thing? I don't remember her laughing once in the first season. She's just so glum. She doesn't even look happy when she's having sex. There's no humor to her, no joy in anything at all. Every time you look at Caitriona Balfe's face in this movie she looks like she's on her way to a funeral. Like she needs to be on anti-depressants or something. It's like they wanted the atmosphere of the thing to be sad and mournful. just as dismal as the Scottish weather. In this production I was relieved to see two actors exchanging dialog on the scene for 60 seconds without one of them being Caitriona Balfe. It's always a rare moment in the production. But refreshing nonetheless.

I wanted to like this as the cast, photography and costuming is very good. I watched the first season and found the incessant "capture/torture/rescue" scenario to be way overused and quite off-putting. I was shocked to find that the source material was penned by a woman given how often rape is used as a plot device, and it happens A LOT. Also for a show/book series that is considered HISTORICAL FICTION it does a terrible job of it, it is really a romance story in a historical setting. The biggest sin was the witch trial which occurred 20 years too late in history and was only include because the author really wanted to have one in her novel. I get that this story is really just a "bodice ripper" romance and is squarely aimed at female audiences.

I was curious as to how the story unfolded in subsequent novels so I read a detailed synopsis of each of them. I'm not going to spoil anything, but the direction this story takes is so weird and convoluted that I'm glad I have not become invested in it. Also with the big change that happens in book three it will be really odd to see how that is handled in a show where the main appeal is young attractive actors as the leads. I was also shocked to find that the fifth novel is 1300 pages long and fan consensus seemed to agree that not much happens to move the plot forward.

As I stated prior the big appeal is Caitriona Balfe as Claire, she is very beautiful and quite talented but seeing her constantly being brutalized got to be a bit too much. The character of Jamie doesn't fare much better, every horrible thing that can happen to someone happens and will happen to him. It's a shame that the show writers didn't just take Diana Gabaldon's work and make it their own as there is a good premise underneath all the problems present in her novels.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As many have noted, there's no one genre to which this fascinating, often terrifying, romantic and amazing story belongs which may, perhaps, be part of its charm. Who could have better guides for each week's journey than the clear-eyed, level-headed Clare and the brave and strong Jamie?
Season 201's opening horrified me--the very idea that Clare should ever be with pudding-face (and Black Jack Randall face) Frank again instead of Jamie is too horrifying to bear. (I pray that is a dream or one possible future and Clare goes back through the stones...)
The actors are so fine, they do justice to the writing and make the words their own--so it is impossible not to think of the actors as real. Wonderful show! And the only reason I subscribe to Starz.

I am very pleased with the series and hope it continues for many of the books to come. I do take exception to some of the critics of the cast. It is a marvelous cast and pointing out body parts to criticize is ridiculous. I hope Catriona never sees these. She has a real woman's body, not implants and other fake parts. Did you ever see the real tears in her eyes and the realistic crying scenes? She is terrific.

I just watched the first season and I must realise that I don't think this is a very good series. I found myself often bored to hell, mainly because the interesting aspects of the series, like the time-travelling, are almost dropped immediately. Also, the characters are often bland and one-dimensional, making them less recognizable and less believable.
