That sets up the sci-fi expectations, but what really transpires is a crime drama. The comparisons to Yellowstone will be inevitable: Gruff rancher with a tough family (including Lily Taylor), border disputes, a dash of Native American flavor and a murder. While the abyss promises mysterious developments, every episode drops a tiny surprise near the end to encourage watching the next one. That means sitting thru the other stuff in hopes of a hint of explanation (doesn't happen). The personal conflicts are moderately interesting, but not really compelling enough to wait around for the big reveal. (Review based on 4 of 8 episodes). Expand

It's a decent show but does seem to lack focus. I'm excited to see a season 2 that can improve upon the first.

It tries very hard to be “Twin Peaks” in tone sometimes, but it takes it self too seriously. The “what a twist” moments are somewhat obvious and the CGI animals that show up from time to time looked awful. They took me out of the show. They should have cut most of the CGI animal interactions that happened. There’s not a lot of action, but the acting is pretty good. I think what had my interest was that you couldn’t quite tell what morality any of the characters had and I found that very interesting. I can’t recommend this unless maybe you’re from a small western town and you want to feel nostalgic for ranch or farm life. Expand

Lots of wasted potential here. Long story short, they managed to make an interesting premise very boring by largely ignoring the most interesting thing the show had going for it and replacing it with... well, nothing.

The scenes are filled with needlessly evasive conversations that go nowhere and add nothing to the plot, making it difficult to feel or build a connection to the characters or story. I tried grabbing on to something, but there was no shock, no thrills, and little to no intrigue. As the plot begins to unfold, It starts to feel like the directors worked against each other in telling this story. I would love to see all of these actors brought together again for a good story with a more seasoned team of writers and directors. As always, if you made it this far, thanks for reading, and if you watch this series, let me know what you think.

Keep it interesting, Stay Channel Surfing!
