Season 1 Review:
Characters spend a lot of time convincing us, and each other, of their beautiful-loser bona fides. But any dramatic shortcomings will be overlooked by those attracted to the show’s basic premise: young people living unsupervised, on the margins of society, but who still get to behave like they have a team of lawyers on retainer. ... Motivations, generally speaking, are less convincing than the hurricane that blows through episode 1. But when everyone looks so good in so little, narrative coherence is lucky to be an afterthought.

If you are looking for a breezy teen-focused series that brings good drama, the compass does not point this way. If you want guns, FBI raids, endless screaming, kidnapping, psychopathic family members, and murderous intentions at every turn… well, you’re getting closer.

Season Three sacrifices nearly all of the show’s original charm to keep its already-unbelievable treasure hunt theme going just a little while longer. Season Three of Outer Banks relies heavily on narration and flashbacks to keep its momentum going, a party trick that does little to hide its thin plot.

Outer Banks is Goonies meets The O.C. by way of Red Dawn and Netflix's very own Stranger Things and possibly On My Block, with just a dash of a high-school Simple Plan — and maybe your affection for those titles will carry you through the long stretches during which Outer Banks veers between stupid, ridiculous and, in little bursts, fun.
