Through DaCosta's Angela it sparks a dialogue about the language and lineage of Black hair that's intricate, detailed and celebratory. ... Another is subtler but important, which is that it depicts the exclusive stratum of Black America that runs on inherited generational fortune and power. ... You should watch because it's a reliable weekly dose of sparkle, glam and extra-ness, along with plenty of hair inspiration, in a dreary world.

Based on what [series creator Karin Gist] showed in the first two episodes, I doubt this series will devolve into the kind of soapy debauch seen on other Black-headlined dramas. She seems more interested in building a world, one where Black people run successful companies, hobnob in elite clubs of their own making and act as though the rest of us don't even exist.

Our Kind Of People is a frothy show with a more serious underlying message about wealth, racism and women supporting each other. If you miss Empire, it should fill that hole in your schedule quite nicely.
-
The pilot is uneven, but the cast is talented enough that I’m hoping things come together in future episodes.
-
A little bit of "Dallas," a little bit of "Empire," "Our Kind of People'' is a whole lot of what you expect it to be. ... Silly, fun, frothy, watchable.
-
It’s not the sociological critique that gives the show its shine — which, at least in the first two episodes, is too shallow and moralistic to take seriously anyway — but the inspirational spectacles of creative Black coiffure.
-
Our Kind of People will surely provide a welcome dose of escapism for some, while looking at a part of the Black community that isn't often presented. But while Daniels caught lightning in a bottle with "Empire," as constructed the underlying dynamics of Our Kind of People feel like a pretty played-out tune.
-
Joe Morton devours the scenery with gusto. Storytelling competency improves a little in episode two but not enough to recommend.
-
But mostly the problem with Our Kind of People is its silly parlor-game sensibility.
-
It’s frustrating to watch this one not only throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, but fail to give its characters enough space to be people outside of the twists defining their lives from second to salacious second. “Our Kind of People” has plenty of intrigue inherent in its premise and location without having to make its ever-changing plots the stars of the show.
-
It’s not just clunky, it’s forgettable — the last thing a show that seems designed for virtual watercooler chat should be.
-
What’s missing, though, is the fun you’d expect — the melodrama doesn’t have much juice, and the performances (even by Joe Morton as a ruthless patriarch) don’t rise above the pedestrian writing.
