Watching it in the original Japanese with the returning voice cast from the anime added an authentic touch to the series. I'm excited to rewatch it in English for a fresh perspective.

What sets this adaptation apart is its balance between loyalty to the source material and making necessary changes for the live-action format. Unlike some adaptations that lose the essence of the original, this one maintains the core concepts of One Piece while crafting a unique experience.

I’m happy it has “too much original source”

Iñaki Godoy deserves special recognition for his portrayal of Luffy. His performance truly brings the beloved character to life, capturing his optimism, seriousness, and fun-loving nature. Emily Rudd's dedication to Nami is evident in her acting, and she seamlessly embodies the character's personality, from her fighting skills to her thieving antics. Mackenyu's portrayal of Zoro is spot-on, delivering the right blend of seriousness and playful humor. Jacob Romero excels as Usopp, even without the long nose, nailing his storytelling and body language.

The entire cast shines, and their chemistry is evident on screen. This live-action adaptation is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved. Having Eiichiro Oda, the manga creator, on board was a brilliant move, and it's clear that his influence added depth to the series.

I appreciate that the creators didn't compromise the integrity of One Piece for the adaptation. Despite minor deviations, the essence remains intact. This, to me, is the best anime-to-live-action adaptation to date, and I'm thrilled with the outcome. I commend the efforts of Matt Owens and others who maintained a balance of seriousness while consulting Oda for authenticity.

In my book, this adaptation deserves an 8.5 out of 10—truly impressive!

Although I have never watched One Piece Anime or know anything about it before, I was still entertained by this. There’s mix of humor, action, and depth. It’s a nice watch.

But damn does this adaptation have heart. This whole thing was written by, made by, acted by, and guided by true One Piece fans. I'm just glad that this not only exists, but I'm also happy to say that it's legitimately good. Even if cut down a lot, this adaptation works all the plotlines together in a compelling way that mostly holds up. The changes they made never felt wrong or out of place, but perhaps execution on a whole sometimes fell flat.

While the Cast are all great choices, sometimes the 'Straw hats' feel less energetic compared to their other adaptations, but their chemistry only grows stronger as the series continues. Having a stronger Focus on The Marines, Coby and Garp especially, really ties the East Blue journey together for me. I wish we got more filler scenes of the 'Straw hats' sailing imo.
The final 2 episodes also don't really leave the same impression on me as the anime did either. But when it comes down to it, the show is campy and lively and after finding is rhythm certainly feels like one piece. It feels like a labour of love that I'm sure will carry the momentum and continue.

Now, is it perfect? No, does it go 1 to 1 to the Anime and Manga? No, I really don't think it could and be successful nor should it have to as long as it's keeping the core of the spirit of the show and this does and it wears it on its sleeve. You are getting an abridged version of the anime done with a lot of love and care with the potential to go on for years and years, I had no desire to watch this or give it a fair chance I expected a woke piece of garbage as is what so much stuff is nowadays but this delivered in a big way. OP has great characters, an infectious energetic and positive Main Character or MC as we call them in our little weeb world and the right mindset of wanting to tell a good story over all the nonsense that plagues modern media these days.

The Good

I cannot stop feeling charged up every time the MC yells over the top of his lungs, or says it with quiet resolve "I will be the King of the Pirates." Luffy is one character that has always aluded me in my anime watches, the anime show's color palate was always a little too psychedelic for my enjoyment so I never got around to watching it. But in retrospect I think it works out well, Nami, Sanji, Zoro, Usopp, Buggy Grandpappy Garp and most of the extended cast were amazing to experience for the first time. After the Live action show I even tried to go back to the anime and see if my taste has imporved, but even though I knew what was going on the color was still a little too in my face, and now I fully admit after all these years of shunning OP, this was a 'Me' problem.

Buggy was my favourite character in all of the show, and I am glad we are going to be seeing more of him, since I am not well versed with the story line I do not know if he joins the gang but I would like to see him as a returning character. The character was brought to life with a surprising amount of menace and silliness that somehow works. All in all, the slightly realistic feel of the Live action seems to have done wonders for my appreciation for one of the legendary anime I have all these years left untouched, however as Netflix tends to cancel good shows I will pray to the heavens that they realize they have a very serious contender in the OPLA to keep viewers around for a long long time, I will be one to stick around as well.

The Bad

Very little here is what I would call bad, a few nitpicks here and there, one stand out of 'could be done better' was Luffy's Gum Gum powers, they keep going into the uncanny valley at times. But it seems to work with the not taking things seriously vibe that the show generally caries, still, a little more in the effects department, maybe a blend of practical and cgi will work wonders.

Conclusion
I can happy call myself a One Piece fan finally after more than a decade of being an Anime fan, the story of One Piece is finally begin for me and I will try and not spoil myself either through manga or the anime so I can experience this through the Live Action medium which is a shock to me considering the failures of LA anime's we have been served in the past.
The curse is hopefully finally broken.

I read the latest chapter several times a week and have all the manga volumes in my cupboard. Since no live-action adaptation of a manga has ever been able to convince me even remotely, I was very sceptical whether Netflix, who made a very poor attempt with Bleach and Cowboy Bebop, would manage to bring an epic like One Piece to the big screen. I was still sceptical if they could capture the chame, even after the first trailers. How wrong you can be, Netflix has succeeded. The actors are extremely well chosen and also my biggest concern, the CGI has been done cleanly. In some places you can tell it's a film set, but that doesn't bother me as much as I expected. The much criticised changes in the story, yes there are, I don't think they are bad. They make it a bit more adult than anime and manga. But what is often a difficult point for me is the dubbing, if you associate a character with a very specific voice, another voice is often wrong. For this reason I was also surprised when I heard the German dubbing, because what was very good for me as a German viewer of the anime was that it was the same voice actors as in the anime. Expand

The show has a youthful charm, is appropriatelyTrue to its manga origins, and filmed in homage to the style of the anime, “One Piece” does a wonderful job of recreating what is one of Japan’s most historic and ingenious works of fiction. The show has a youthful charm, is appropriately silly and is extremely “Woke”, but can be forgiven for the later, due to the respect it gives its roots. It’s extremely rare to see media stay true to form, as producers, directors and the requirements of filming often interfere with any authenticity a story might have as filming progresses. The small deviations this show does take are done in such good taste, that it can even be argued that they improve the story.
It’s difficult to ask this show to reproduce the frenetic fight scenes and rapid pace of its predecessor, the Japanese anime. To do so would require a higher bar in terms of emotional performance as well as action sequence. The anime presents incredibly exaggerated expressions and gestures thru creative vantage points. It’s very wise of developers Matt Owens and Steven Maeda to forego these requirements in this live-action remake, allowing the series to come down to Earth, while still delivering excitement and laughter to its audience! The cinematographers do a commendable job filming, and all other aspects of the show (including script, plot and sound) are delivered professionally, even down to each line being clearly spoken. “One Piece” is about friendship, character, and skill. It’s also about over-the-top villains and down-to-Earth protagonists. Monkey D. Luffy’s infectious confidence inspires others; he searches their hearts for their one true desire, and helps them achieve it. As such, he is a true hero, despite the clingy, brown-nose style this series exaggerates in his character. Sadly, the decision to include blood and gore in this show seriously detracts from its ability to be family friendly. Despite this setback, “One Piece” delivers on its goofy, action-packed premise, and is a great popcorn flick / series for parties and get togethers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Netflix had the heavy task of producing a Live Action on a deeply cartoonish universe as a whole. It is not a question of making superheroes in a realistic universe but of recreating the entire fantastic universe of One Piece (islands, boats, fish men, with secondary or iconic characters with a very particular style).

Another difficulty was being able to keep the spirit of the manga with 5 times less viewing time. This is precisely where the term rehabilitation takes on its full meaning.

By reorganizing the events as they did they were able to summarize 96 chapters in only 8 episodes without the mechanics of time acceleration (5 days later, etc.) while being fluid in the narration and preserving the story as that we know her.

Some modifications are even welcome for the series. The presence of Nami earlier and the fact that she knows how to fight from the start, the fact that Luffy witnesses Zoro's behavior towards the little girl from the bar, the death of Merry who is more coherent in the face of the injury than he undergoes.

I was also surprised by certain actors who were able to enhance their characters as is the case with Usopp and Hermep.

I knew that fans were going to have a good time but I didn't think the series was going to conquer Grand Line! Luffy makes everyone smile!!

Great show! It's deeper than the original manga or anime. I like how authors show us more connections between straw hats. More dialogues, more violence, more mooore! We surely need future seasons! UNTIL WE FIND THE ONE PIECE!

Plotlines have been severely truncated and butchered to the point of lacking most of the soul of the original series. Very 'quippy' Marvel-esque humor that audiences were already tired with 4-5 years ago. Overall it would seem that Tomorrow Studios learned absolutely nothing from Cowboy Bebop because this is almost as bad as that show was. Expand

I’ve started the anime now and can’t wait for season 2 of this. From what I’ve seen some of the changes they made from the anime were seriously out of love. Like the part where the crew gifts Luffy the Jolly Roger mainsail was so touching. The part at the end where they put their feet on the barrel and we see them as kids legit made me cry. The acting was so good Expand

Unfortunately, as an objective refutation of the review, I am a fan, but I'd argue the adaptation is still a "good place to start". The wild mix in tone and influences IS the point, it's a hodgepodge of stuff with surreal elements, horror, and children's influences (what, Americans STILL think fantasy/fairy tales are only for kids? The Grimm Brothers and Japanese Anime both defy you)
At the heart, Luffy is some wildcard character that rounds up a bunch of people who are reluctant to chase their dreams, and he tells them "it's all right, go for it".
At the same time, he leads them towards a common goal, to get the One Piece treasure. I'd call Luffy's approach to motivating his crew the "Self-actualization" level in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. I gave the series a 9/10.

One Piece is a very weird and wacky world that I just don't believe could be brought accuratelyOne Piece is one of my favourite manga. I was genuinely flabbergasted when I heard that there was going to be a live-action adaptation of this. One Piece is a very weird and wacky world that I just don't believe could be brought accurately into live-action. Additionally, Netflix was going to make it and they have failed miserably with manga/anime live-action adaptations. Death Note completely butchered the characters and was not a faithful story. Cowboy Bebop had none of the charm of the anime with terrible writing and also not a faithful story. My expectations for this were at an all-time low but the creator of One Piece, Oda, was involved in this project. So maybe 3rd time is the charm?

The first thing I noticed from the first couple of episodes, was the stunning set designs and costumes. I was surprised at the amount of practical sets that felt like great replications of places in the source material. The iconic ship, The Going Merry, looks 1 to 1 exactly like it does in the manga and it looks beautiful! CGI is implemented to further bring the world to life but it is never overused or bad to look at. The characters look exactly like the source material from their clothes to their hair. They use practical make-up and prosthetics for non-human characters and they look great! The action scenes are also very well choreographed while having no shaky camera which is awesome! Nami, Zoro and Sanji have such terrific fight scenes. I was worried about how they would do Luffy's rubber powers in live action but it is done very well. The music score by Sonya and Giona is terrific. They created a score that really gives off the adventure and pirate feeling. They also do an awesome cover of the iconic opening "We Are" as well.

On that note, the casting of the Straw Hats is perfect. Inaki Godoy captures the optimism and silliness of Luffy without feeling cringy. Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson and Taz Skylar manage to bring the core personalities of their characters Nami, Zoro, Usopp and Sanji to live action respectfully. For example, Nami still has her flirty scenes to trick people and Sanji still has the flirty treatment with women albeit no longer bothering them which is an understandable change. The villains are also well cast with each of them pulling off the character in live action phenomenally. The great highlight is Jeff Ward as Buggy who somehow manages to be incredibly scary yet silly which is exactly who Buggy is.

One of the biggest reasons for the failure of previous adaptations by Netflix is the butchering of the story. I can thankfully say that this is not the case in One Piece (2023). The main core of each story is still here and the iconic moments are replicated here as well. It was awesome seeing the moments I loved in the anime being done here in the same manner. The adventurous and fun yet violent nature of One Piece is still retained here. There are changes to the story which is understandable because they need to put the story in an 8-hour series. For example, they removed side characters like Johnny, Yosaku and Jango or changed how fights are resolved and how arcs end. Nonetheless, these changes don't hurt the series and it is quite impressive that they managed to still tell the same story. The tone of the show is a bit more serious than the source material but this is also understandable. Manga and Anime are different types of media than a live-action TV show. Not everything can be brought to live-action without coming off as weird but the showrunners understood that and struck a good balance between serious and wacky fun without leaning too hard in either direction.
