This season is an improvement from last year but not by much. A major battle between the evil Emma versus the former Evil Queen would really highlight this season. What I find interesting is that the show now centers around Emma and Regina where the rest of the cast seems to have faded into the background; especially David and Mary Margaret.

I've reached my breaking point with the show. The writing has just gotten too asinine. There is no long any consistency with the characters as they will constantly go back and forth against everything they've previously stood for just to create artificial drama. The writing has just gotten too asinine. There is no long any consistency with the characters as they will constantly go back and forth against everything they've previously stood for just to create artificial drama. Any and all character development goes right out the window as the writers do whatever they can to ensure everyone onscreen ends up right back in the same position they started from, regardless of whether it makes any sense or not. Then there's just how incompetent and outright stupid these fairytale heroes are...

Admittedly, these are all issues that have more or less plagued the show from the beginning. It's just that they're worse than ever in season 5. Not even a midseason trip to hell complete with a darker, more horror-like vibe could restore my interest. Especially not since this where the show starts trying to go for shock value in an effort to come off as more mature and introduces us to the most annoying villain yet; Hades. Greg Germann's performance is so hammy and irritating that it kills any menace the foe might have otherwise had.

The only positive things I can say about this season are that the visuals are better than ever and it takes the time to show us what happened to some of those small supporting characters who just kind of disappeared, like Little Red Riding Hood. It even manages to give one or two of them some nice conclusions to their time of the show. Largely though, season 5 is just a mess of bad writing that has really killed my enjoyment of the show. Whether or not I stick around to see what happens to the characters in season 6 before the soft reboot is currently up in the air. Even if I do, I won't be returning after to see the new direction taken from there.

With a smart decision to focus on the lead characters and not the overall "gimmick" plot of the season, Once Upon A Time feels renewed with a dark energy in its shockingly sprightly fifth year.
