They honor the job without trivializing it, or turning it into melodramatic entertainment pap for the masses.
-
It is, in its artfulness and drama, a smashing pilot and--from the evidence of the next episodes--a reliable indicator of the quality to come.
-
The series, written by Price and produced by Robert DeNiro, has NYC cred, and it, like its characters, grows with each episode.
-
It boasts at least a whiff of the grittiness to be found in creator/writer Richard Price's 1992 novel about drug dealer, Clockers. [13 Apr 2012, p.79]
-
While the broad strokes tend to remind you that you're watching a fiction, the finer details are well done - the bits and pieces are satisfying, even as you note the rivets and seams that join them.
-
It's a well-done, somewhat sleepy ensemble drama about newbies on patrol. [7 May 2012, p.46]
-
The first episode is not a courageous start, despite good acting from the ensemble cast, generous location shooting, and a quirkily realized context.
-
Some of the bits are awfully predictable, like tough-guy Sands mellowing into a big-brother type for a young street punk who (amazing coincidence alert) has a hottie older sister. Others are more interesting, particularly a debate between Goldberg and Marte over whether warring on drugs makes any sense.
-
The dialogue is crisp, no scene lasts too long, and despite the large cast, we can follow what's happening. What's not clear yet is whether this show has its own style and vision.
-
NYC 22 feels like the TV version of the show it wants to be.
-
NYC 22 isn't the best or worst show you'll ever see.
-
The show is pretty much a by-the-numbers cop show.
-
The scripts are efficient. The acting is decent. But you're likely to find yourself just waiting for the familiar crises and character complications to come along, and sure enough, they do.
-
When it comes to most of the rookie characters and the plot, nothing in the pilot of NYC 22 jumps out as being particularly original or interesting.
-
It's better-acted than some shows, less grating than others. Its greatest flaw is it's too familiar and predictable.
-
While the show's vision encompasses a touch more character than the average procedural, this latest case of the NYPD blues is hardly a reason to start spreading the news.
-
In short, nothing really jumps off the screen here.
-
NYC 22 (for the 22nd Precinct in Harlem) is pretty average, which is to say: Nothing to write home about and probably nothing that you'll stick with very long.
-
NYC 22 is very much a prototypical CBS show--it lacks ambition but it's not terrible.
-
NYC 22 isn't even trying. It's not too too, it's too little.
-
TV this dull should be outlawed.
