The show is a daring take on the saturated genre. .... When it returns to the investigation and drops the “oh-too-predictable” bombshells, it contextualizes them beyond the gritty details. Hehir’s direction and story sequence is riveting, and the interview subjects have much to offer, whether it be from a first-hand account or through decades of research and advocacy.

Murder in Boston doesn’t break much formal ground: It hews mostly to the industry-standard mix of archival footage and talking-head interviews, and even includes Hehir’s much-memed Last Dance technique of occasionally having subjects watch footage of one another’s testimonies on an iPad. But the series is refreshingly nuanced, rich in context, and deftly assured in its narrative decisionmaking.

"Murder in Boston" in its three parts ("Roots" then "Rampage" then "Reckoning") is a captivating crime story, a socio-political treatise and even evidence that life can get better.

Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning gives voice to the people who were unjustly victimized by law enforcement and examines the legacy of that painful rush to judgment.
