If you’re interested in the Murdaugh story, and a lot of people obviously are, you’ll want to devour both. They necessarily cover a lot of the same ground, but talk to different people, which gives them a different feel and more perspectives. “Murdaugh Murders” goes in on tacky reenactments a little more. ... Of course it’s too much. That’s why people can’t look away.

Even if you’ve seen the HBO Max series [“Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty] and you’ve been following the current trial of Alex Murdaugh on charges of killing his wife and son, the story is so incredible, so bizarre and so chilling that the Netflix doc makes for a compelling viewing experience.

If you don’t already know its stranger-than-fiction twists, “Murdaugh Murders” is worth watching simply for its coherent, if slightly and predictably sensationalized, account of the events.

It provides a crash course in the scandals and deaths that have engulfed the old-money Murdaugh family for years. ... Filmmakers Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason do a fine job spinning the yarn, pulling the viewer this way and that, and letting the “Can you top this?” details slowly pile up.

A useful, and severely unflattering, primer on a story that true-crime junkies can continue following right now on the nightly news.

The series is competently told and I binged it in one sitting. It gives a strong sense of this corner of South Carolina, a world of oyster roasts and hunting trips and small-town gossip. But, without wishing to give away the ending, it reaches no conclusions. A criminal trial is yet to come, which begs the question of why the documentary has been released now when it is frustratingly short of answers.

Having a docuseries ready to go as Alex Murdaugh’s trial commands headlines falls squarely into that basket [right place at the right time] even if it is, by its very nature, chasing a moving target. What “Murdaugh Murders” doesn’t do, ultimately, is make much of a case for watching it.

While Murdaugh Murders is a somewhat concise guide to the murder charges around Alex Murdaugh, there are better options out there.

Creators spend too much time with the Wall Street Journal writer who had no information to provide other than rumors she heard from locals. There's plenty of evidence that's been covered by other sources, but you wouldn't know it watching this. Bad editing and research combine to make this a convoluted mess of a mini series. Full Review »
