This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed season 1, but first 10 hours of season 2 have been taxing. The show has become self-indulgent and forgotten drama. If I have to watch unresponsive characters staring silently into the middle distance for one minute longer...
There are speeches that the writer obviously felt really chuffed with and imagined to be extraordinarily profound. They needed cutting. The characters are not reacting in any kind of emotionally honest way in most scenes, which is fine for Elliot, because we know he's pretty insane, but for the others it becomes irritating.
To be really engaging we need a genuine sense of journey, but 10 hours in to season 2 the journey has been limited. Angela, we don't know her real motivations, and has one demeanour - constant inner agony.
Elliot, has been on a farcical journey of insanity, which even the TV show apologised for - his narration promised not to do it again (it only took 3 eps).
Mr Robot, is just Mr Robot, no real character to him.
Tyrell was a great character, but he's dead or not, we dont know. Mrs Wellick hasn't really learnt any new tricks, so she's not very interesting. Madame executioner sounded promising, but they killed her. Gideon was even interesting as the one decent human, but they killed him. Philip Price is turning into a self parody full of completely unnatural speeches that try to explain the nature of power, totally unbelievable. Darlene, we don't really know what motivates her, so not an interesting journey. Her boyfriend slightly more interesting, but seemingly pretty dumb.
I will watch this to the end in the hope that they pull something out of the bag, but I am losing heart.

While Mr. Robot stumbles with its 1st and 3rd acts, it doesn't matter when the show is still intriguing and the performances are still top notch. But the last episode is truly confusingly cliffhangery.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I did not like the second season. It was generally slow with a few better episodes, but nowhere as good the first one which was superb. Frankly the show should have been finished at season 1. Now when the hackers achieved their goal it's all about FBI tracking them which is much less interesting and also about Elliot schizpfrenia getting worse to the point that not only he talks to his dead father but also having problems with differentiating between what is real and what is not. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After a weekend of binge-rewatching all of season 1, I was ready for some heady stuff. I'm pretty pleased by the 2-part season opener. Fired up that Craig Robinson is part of the proceedings, and the introduction of Gummer as an FBI agent is great. Not sure what to make of Gideon's death - is it real? I surely hope not - I'm very much a fan of the actor and the character. I hope the season doesn't spend too much time on that battle between Elliot and Mr. Robot - I mean, sure, it's at the heart of the show. But too much of a good thing can be a problem. I"m digging the aesthetics of Angela's new life at E-corp, and Darlen's smart-house hack sequence is brilliant. The trip to Washington by the E-corp CEO may have been the weakest part of the opener, especially because that actor is brilliant, and the scene isn't worthy of his presence. Oh! And the Battery Park burning of the cash is super-effective, preceded by a highly realistic random note by fsociety. Excellent beginning of the new season. Fired up to see more. Expand

When a show's whole premise revolves around characters trying to accomlish a specific goal, they're always going to run into trouble once that goal is accomplished. Call it the "Who Killed Laura Palmer" problem.

Season 2 of Mr Robot runs into this problem hard. With the hack of Evil Corp accomplished and the secret of Mr Robot revealed, there's just nowhere else for the plot to go.

Elliot spins his wheels in the suburbs, being generically insane and listening to pointless existentialist monologues from a couple "numinous negro" stereotypes. Darlene decides to... hack Evil Corp again? Because it didn't work the first time, thus rendering the whole first season pointless. Angela listens to self-help tapes, random FBI chick buys sandwiches, Tyrell Wellick breathes heavily into phones, and Romero commits suicide due to boredom. The only likeable character is Christian Slater, as he bellows at Elliot to get off his ass and do something dramatic and interesting for cripe's sake. One sympathizes.

The artsy cinematography and haunting score are still present, but in the absence of a compelling storyline they're just cutesy and cloying. There's no narrative drive or momentum anymore, just a lot of flailing around punctuated by random bursts of violence. In the absence of anything interesting for them to do it becomes tough to care what happens to the established characters, and the new additions of Flat-Affect FBI Girl and Gangster Fat Albert don't help.

It's always a shame to see a good show push past its sell-by date, but it's looking like this should've been a 10-episode miniseries from the start.

Bad-ass start to the new season. Keep it coming, Sam! It's just such a rich, textured series. I tend to agree with the one critic who suggested that this could be as good as Breaking Bad eventually. Esmail wears his influences on his sleeve, but so what? He does it extremely well. I hope this goes 5 - 6 - 7 seasons. No early deaths!

Over-hyped, Instagram-filter-ish, self-important vacuousness populated by cardboard-cutout, two-dimensional characters performed by lackluster actors. Rami Malek, the lead, is actually alright in his performance, though the "autistic and/or socially inept genius" cliché was already an exhausted resource by the time Mr. Robot was first released: Sherlock, Elementary, Monk, the Mentalist, etc... Not to mention that the whole premise behind Mr Robot (both the split personality and the project to bring down financial institutions) are literally lifted from Fight Club. MR RBT & Esmail are taking risks few other series have before. Would The Sopranos have aired a single episode without Tony? Is Breaking bad as interesting without Jessie Pinkman & Walter White appearing in an episode? Episode "eps 2.6_succ3ss0r.p12" does exactly that. While we sit around Doxing WTF happened to Elliot one week earlier, Darlene's unpredictable actions and cat & mouse FBI / Dark Army story propels the story full speed ahead into a brick fire wall without a trace of Emmy Award winner Rami Malek or Christian Slater yelling in his ear. We even hang out with with Alf this season for Christ sake. Tyrell Wellick, finally makes an appearance and is simply reduced to tied up baggage, an after thought in the back up Elliot's twisted psyche that Sam Esmail couldn't possibly mine any deeper.

The flair of this series extends beyond visual seduction and gnarly needle drops. It's topical and relevant societal, political scenarios which frankly are so possible it's a horror show. One of my favorite scenes of the season: Elliot literally embracing (himself) to tears for Mr. Robot protecting well, (himself) from a horrible beating at the hands of Ray's henchmen and it's some touching **** somehow. Also, equally as compelling & beautiful is a young Elliot carrying the weight of his fathers unemployment & secret illness, hiding this truth from his own mother. Elliot's father rewards his loyalty with the task of naming the new family business. Any guesses to the name? The bottom line kiddo, is this is a show that could give a **** what you think about it, and is all the better for it. This isn't Burn Notice, it's Mr. ****ing Robot. So, FSociety & **** you too.

Hey, Mr. Robot. WTF!?! This is the best approximation I can give the second season of this thrilling first
class drama, which shocked and impressed us again and again.

Even though the season started out bumpy, with a few too long episodes (running time over 60 minutes!), which were hard too follow and felt a bit stretched, Mr. Robot improved enormously. after episode 4. Overall I did adore the season.

This season went through some creative changes and most notable of them all was that Elliot's mentality became the center of storytelling (at least in the first half of the season). Rather than letting the story around Elliot progress placidly, it was pushed down constantly because of Elliot's paranoia and mental problems. Throughout the season I was not able to figure out what was real and what not. And even now - what really happened (Ray? Tyrell?)?. Where does the imagination stop? That kind of confusing narrative can destroy a really good story. Unfortunately.

Nevertheless, this season was saved by everything that was happening around three best characters on the show - Darlene, Dom, and Angela. Grace Gummer portrayed the overly - complex Dominique, for who we root for even though we are meant to root for fsociety (kinda). Carly Chaikin upgraded Darlene to astonishing rebel - figure. And Portia Doubleday overcame not only herself but the whole cast as well.

Apart from the award - deserving performances, the story lines of these characters were very intense and beautifully executed. From Dom meeting Whiterose to Darlene becoming the leader of a worldwide revolution.

Mr. Robot is only reflection of society today. Isn't it? Aren't we all caught up in the corporate - neoliberal frame that we can not escape? We are all in some kind of debt. And we all own something to someone.
And we now collectively own Sam Esmail a big thank you for bringing us a gut - wrenching, beautifully directed and overly - smart season of one of the best shows around the world.

    Thank you Sam.

Ignoring that we get these redundant scenes, I also feel there's a lot of padding in the sense scenes take longer than necessary. We need to be shown for almost 3 minutes that a smart house became a noise hell due to hacking. The same with a chess scene, where we find out you can't beat yourself playing chess........ There are a lot of these kind of scenes, which feel stretched out because frankly there was not much else happening to fill the time better with.

Probably due to the big 'reveal' midway in the season which pretty much made most of what you saw in the first half of the season pointless. Because of this constraint they couldn't really further the story.. A reveal which made no sense at all, because why would he lie to his 'invisible firend' to begin with? Other than the writers wanting to force another "Fight Club"-esque reveal moment into the season.

It's the 2nd half of the season which sort of saves it in my opinion. mainly because things actually happen and the story gets furthered along. Yeah some characters are turning into charicatures with their speeches or conversations which seem unrealistic. Especially the 'bad guy' and the sister. And we get some silly scenes with the girlfriend being tested by a little girl. But at least things happened, for real and not make believe,

Not nearly as strong as the first, but still great. There seem to be a few confusing plot points and it's not nearly as exciting or interesting as the first, but good additions (characters), thought-provoking plot twists, and all around great television keep this interesting.

Nothing like season 1, which is 10/10. It was confusing, like at all. To many fillers, too little actually happening. It just like they made something they invented it during the shooting process. I will admit that I skipped many scenes, because it was simply boring. Music and sounds - also disappointing.

in second season the rhythm is so slow, the pace isn't pleasant, the storyline is ok though.

This season chokes on its own cleverness. It's hard to say if anything really happens other than the director yanking the blindfold away to yell "surprise!!" This season makes somewhat more sense as it sets up season 3, but seriously? Not much happens this season.

Just as good as season 1 if not a bit better. Maleks acting of the Eliot character is sublime and even surpasses Christian Slaters acting. The attention to detail is great and the show always keeps you guessing, as to whether what is being shown or told by the narrator is actually true or a figment of Eliots imagination

For me, it continues with the spirit of the first season but it does not reach it in quality.

Mr. Robot is one of the best TV series I've ever seen. I consider it to be on par with the likes of Breaking Bad. It blew my goddamn mind. It's original, unique, and unpredictable. There isn't any other show like this. The story is excellent and you're always wondering what will happen next. I cared about pretty much all the characters. Solid performances from the actors across the board, especially from Rami Malek. Mr. Robot starts on a high note, continues on a high note, and ends on a high note. The quality and the consistency never falter at all. I **** love it. Go watch it right now. Expand

Season 2 of Mr. Robot is incredible. The season starts of slightly more slower than the first allowing us to understand the lifestyle of Elliot after the unexpected events of season 1. Sam Esmail’s weirdly mesmerizing cyberthriller continues to pull off an audacious feat of boldly original, eerily relevant and daringly surreal storytelling, reminiscent of the visionary cinema of the 1970s. [25 Jul-7 Aug 2016, p.14]

Mr. Robot may be self-serious, but it’s also a rarity on TV, capturing a modern mood, an ambient distrust based on genuine social betrayals. For all its flaws, it feels like an alarm going off. It’s worth paying attention to.

Mr. Robot continues to use its distinct aesthetic to explore some of the fundamental tensions at the heart of what made both politicians’ campaigns so popular.
