It’s a bluntly entertaining, thoroughly disposable series nestled partway between prestige antihero drama and enjoyably brainless pulp, not quite providing the pleasures of either but not exactly failing at its mid-level aspirations.

M.I.A. is at its best when it stops trying to be Ozark and lets itself be Ozark's sweatier, more deranged cousin. From the nine episodes provided for review, it hasn’t fully accepted that fact yet, but maybe a Season 2 pickup will help it come to terms.

The elements are all there, and the show is dripping with potential, but for now, M.I.A. is still finding itself.

If you’re looking for a darkly violent Florida revenge saga with its vices and its sensationalism right up front, and a cliffhanger to close it out, give it a try. All I’ll say is, no more for me.

There’s one more big, silly twist at the end that begs for a second season. By then, any reason to see this as more than dispensable fluff has been thoroughly killed off.
