There are trope-ish reenactments, grainy footage, paper headlines slowly zoomed into, and audio clips all subtitled in old-timey typewriter font, with just enough string section swell and ba dum bass to make it late-night spooky. Even though, at the core, this is all just as much about listening, compiling information, and breaking the barriers of the boys club of the FBI.

If you like gimmicky bells and whistles in your documentaries, this is probably isn't for you. .... I found her [Burgess] a hypnotic person to listen to, her demeanour - like a cross between Miss Marple and Julie Andrews.

The action, so to speak, has taken place in the mind of the subject and all the archival material in the world isn’t going to make it cinematic. Where “Mastermind” really picks up momentum, though, is in episode 3. .... Unlike with her earlier efforts, Dr. Burgess came under fire for both cases [Menendez brothers and Cosby accuser Andrea Constand], but that may be why they prove to be more interesting—the conflict, the relatively recent history and the consistency of Dr. Burgess.
