Berry handles this all with the understated, dignified charm longtime viewers of GBBS will find utterly familiar.

Berry’s primary aim was to minimise the stress through preparation, and I chimed with her love of a good list. Hacks included pre-cooked roast potatoes and a turkey prepped on Christmas Eve.

The show is nothing new in cookery TV but there are several reasons to watch: Amid the blizzard of holiday programming little is so deliberately upbeat and optimistic as being told by the former “Great British Baking Show” host that you can actually do what she’s doing. The music is a bit insistent about creating a mood, but Ms. Berry’s enthusiasm is real and never wavers.

[Mary Berry] does everything with class even when she had to pretend it was Christmas Day when it was clearly mid-October. ... It all looked very aesthetically pleasing, apart from the turkey, which always looks gross, but I couldn’t help wondering how willing people will be in the energy cost crisis to spend hours steaming a pudding. Berry’s ruby red cabbage looked gorgeous, but three hours of cooking time? No chance.
