They’re Los Angeles’ prime weed dealers, and they economically blast through the quick wit and gunfire dialogue expected of the modern sitcom, delivering a show that’s not all that original, but (unlike MTV’s other new sitcom, Loosely Exactly Nicole) does enough new and weird things with the formula as to slightly stand out from the crowd.

Mary + Jane feels like a corporate entity, which isn't without its positives. It has money behind it, so it never feels sloppy or cheap or raw or amateurish. And Kaplan and Elfont are trained and experienced auteurs of quippy, poppy female empowerment as fans of Can't Hardly Wait and Josie and the Pussycats know. But it isn't hard to look at the character of Jordan in Mary + Jane, see how much she comes across like Ilana Wexler from Broad City.

Actually, there’s really nothing special about Paige and Jordan, or Mary + Jane, which may not bode well for its long-term survival odds.

An uneven buddy comedy about two women who deliver weed--excuse me, two women who, as they put it in polite company, run a “legal prescription delivery service.”
