This show is good, ignore the clueless critics. I find it hilarious that some of the same critics that panned this show gave Luke Cage good or decent reviews when that show was utter garbage. This is probably the 3rd best of the Netflix Marvel shows but its miles ahead of Luke Cage.

This is the best Marvel Series since the KingPin DareDevil one. For sure better than the critically over rated Cage and Jessica Jones. Give it a shot for yourself. The only reason it gets a 9 is because the lead actor is not how I see Danny Rand at all and I've been an Iron Fist fanatic since the Heroes For Hire.

I decided to rate and review, 'cos critics rate this show absurdly low, as is they're hired for such negative reviews.
For me The Iron Fist is deeper than any other superhero tv series.

I watched this show with little prior knowledge and no preconceptions. I've loved the previous Netflix Marvel series' but after Luke Cage didn't have high hopes. Luke Cage was boring for me and didn't speak to me in any way.

Iron Fist starts slow, after the 2nd episode I was actually frustrated. However I was really glad I kept with it. This was a fantastic experience for me, I enjoyed it almost as much as Daredevil. It is a different story to the previous series, actually very well crafted, excellently told, the only fault I would give the story telling is that it doesn't cater to well to the ADD audience and isn't highly attentive to pacing. For me this is a huge positive, the characterisation becomes much stronger for it, where the story is paying attention to the lives of the characters it doesn't throw in an action scene just to keep me watching, I get a real feel for who each of them are, and reveals more and plays with my assumptions as I go, revealing things I hadn't realised before.

The casting is very strong in my opinion, the main character Danny Rand is played as a non typical protagonist. He is brilliantly pulled off with child like naivety and innocence but believably kicks ass. I should mention the fight scenes are not the greatest part of the show, I have seen much better in the likes of Daredevil, that's not to say the action isn't fun, it is, it just isn't as impact-ful or artful as DD.
I also think the casting of the secondary characters is as good as the main protagonist, Colleen Wing is excellent and as likable as Danny Rand. There are very few weak performances.

This has left me very excited for the Defenders, Daredevil started me off in love, Jessica Jones was an enjoyable watch, DD season 2 got me excited again, then Luke Cage made me realise these series were being made by very different people. Iron Fist has put me back to how excited I was after Daredevil, it's a great character that will clearly be very different to the previous 3 and is as likable as any of them.

I'm not writing this review in defense of critical reception, however, the ire this series has received is completely unfounded. I wanted to leave my thoughts as follows. *No spoilers below, though I suggest you finish the series yourself before reading any reviews.*

"The Iron Fist" tells a fantastic story and while it does start out somewhat slow, it does a fantastic job of character development for the entire cast. The slow beginning is attributed to explaining Danny Rand (Finn Jones) and his past, bridging the gap to the series beginning. It's an origin story, much like every other Marvel series first season on Netflix.

Some critics had issues with Finn Jones' portrayal of the "Iron Fist" and I can only attribute that to his deliberately scripted naivety flying over their heads. The character has been disconnected from the world for the entirety of his teenage/adult life and entering the metropolitan mecca of New York city is strange to him initially. I thought it was a good representation of those events. He also goes through some powerful character development and ends in a great culmination as the character unravels his mysteries.

The supporting cast of the series is amazing, David Wenham's portrayal of "Howard Meachum" and Tom Pelphrey as "Ward Meachum" steal the series. The dynamic and chemistry between them both is amazing and I found myself just as invested in their character arc, if not more, than that of Iron Fist. Both showed stunning acting capability and should be recognized for their fantastic portrayal.

Jessica Henwick plays "Colleen Wing," the main protagonist's love interest. Some critics have suggested that it follows the same formula as other Netflix series. I however, found their dynamic unique and compelling. Both characters help unravel each-others past and surrounding mystique. It isn't simply thrust into the viewers face, and tells a complex tale with a engaging character arc. I actually found it more unique than that of the other Netflix series.

Jessica Stroup plays "Joy Meachum" and while she doesn't steal the show, she deserves a mention for her formidable acting and plays her role to near perfection. She's a powerful woman dealing with the death of her father while trying to forward the success of the business empire she inherited, leading down twists and turns of complex situations and eventually finding out who she really is inside.

Rosario Dawson reprises her role as "Claire Temple" as well as Wai Ching Ho as "Madame Gao". If you're familiar with previous Marvel series on Netflix you're intimate with both characters. Both play their roles similarly and very well. One criticism of Rosario Dawson's character throughout these series is that she seems to pop up at critical plot points. I do wish they'd introduce her more subtly. However, she ultimately delivers as intended.

There are other supporting members of the cast that play their roles solidly, such as the mysterious Ramon Rodriguez as "Bakuto" and Sacha Dhawan as "Davos." I have nothing but praise for both actors.

The fighting in the series is true to Marvel's style in the Netflix universe, with a touch of Ninja themed combat and more hand to hand violence. I found it enjoyable. It was a nice change from the typical masked warrior with his gadgets. It has more of a human mortal element to it and it had me more personally invested in each fight scene, though as far as "gore" it was toned down in comparison to the other series. In this situation it's probably for the best. The lack of a huge super hero ability and corny costume made me connect more with the character.

The overall plot twists and turns with beautiful character development for the surrounding cast, and the tale that is spun kept me engaged from episode 1 to 13. I was never not entertained, and went into the series actually expecting the worst due to some of the critical reception. However, an engaging story presented itself and left me more than satisfied upon its ending, and I do hope a second season eventually transpires. You might want to resist the urge to binge watch and take in the series at your own pace, I found it more enjoyable that way. I highly suggest viewers give it a try blindly and use freedom of thought when watching. When compared to other Marvel Netflix series it holds up more than satisfactory. I believe most of the negative criticism comes from those not wishing for an "Iron fist' series, and yearning for more of their already familiar heroes or those they desire to be introduced. However, if you can put that past yourself and think of the series objectively you can enjoy the beginning of the "Iron Fist" from start to finish and leave adequately satisfied, and possibly wanting more. If there was another season in the works I'd hardly object. Iron fist was another fantastic edition to Netflix's marvel universe and if you're familiar with the superhero genre it will leave you ultimately pleased and wanting more!

Wow. The critics reviews on this are so far off i don't even know where to start. In fact i won't try to. Watch the show and I can tell you it will not disappoint and is way better than the critics are letting on. Plenty of action, good story and pacing for the most part, and while i would agree that Finn is maybe the weakest actor on the show, it is still really well done.

This is a really good show , A short one but fits the entire back story of the Iron Fist. The show has some twists and turns , but in the end the ending turned out to be cliche. If season 2 starts to make the series more interesting story wise I might consider a 10/10!

I've spent almost 5 months, trying to persuade myself to watch Jessica Jones to the end. I didn't spent so much effort with Luke Cage; it lasted till the first episode. I couldn't disagree more with the negative critic reviews on this show. It's actually been quite good. I still think Daredevil and Jessica Jones is better, but Iron Fist is really enjoyable. I've read the criticisms and the biggest ones I've seen are that the pacing is bad, the storytelling is sloppy, the villains bland and the lead Finn Jones not being convincing. While I understand the last criticism, I disagree with ALL of them.
I found the pacing to be fine, if not better than in Luke Cage (the first half was solid and the second half felt like it dragged in LC). The storytelling is fine. I don't agree with the notion it's a slow grind. Each scene builds layers into the story, from Danny's time in the hospital to his encounter with each "villain." I say "villain" in quotes by the way because Joy, Harold and Ward Meachum each have several layers. I find this no more impressive by the way than in Ward Meachum, portrayed by Tom Pelphrey. There is a depth to his character that the actor conveys with subtle facial expressions. I think one of the highlights of the show is Ward Meachum and the simmering resentment you understand his character feels with each episode. As for Finn Jones as Danny Rand. Some people have said he seems more like a frat boy who took a karate lesson. This is intentional. Danny is a well meaning rich boy who tows the line of two worlds, one with spirituality and black-white views on the notion of material wealth, and the other being the elite world in Manhattan. Danny is jovial in his martial arts. At first it seems awkward, until you understand his background. At one point he says he was "trained for an enemy that never came." He has never had to see the real fruits of his labor, the finish line of his training, his purpose. So he's very much a boy with all these abilities with no one to appreciate them, no one to say "WOW, that's why Iron Fist was trained." Not only that, but he spent his life in a monastery longing for a life he so violently lost. The character of Danny Rand is accurately portrayed here, and Finn Jones brings a tenderness that I find endearing. It's a good foil as well for the brooding conflict of Matt Murdock and trauma of Jessica Jones.
One last thing, the combat. I've seen criticism of the fight scenes and while I do agree Daredevil's were better, I think Iron Fist's are quite good. From the trailers it looks like Danny Rand is just playing around. This is intentional. Those you see him fighting were never a threat. They were an exercise and he didn't exert himself. Keep watching. There's a great scene in the second episode where you realize "oh **** Danny Rand can hurt people." His kung-fu background is the explanation for his water-like movements, and it works.
OH, and Jessica Henwick is amazing as Colleen. Her portrayal of a woman with a strict moral code that's slowly crumbling because of her growing displeasure with her circumstances is brilliantly portrayed. She brings such life to the character, and she's a badass.
There are a few issues with the series. The fight scenes could use better camera angles, but they are still quite enjoyable and up to par from what you would expect. There is an awkward "get-to-know-you-scene" in episode 5 that shouldn't occur where it does, but the scenes that follow more than make up for it.

Iron Fist is a story that I don't expect most professional critics to like, since it's central theme is refusing other people's ideas and deciding for yourself. The story is confusing and convoluted and there is little in the way of easy answers. it's not social commentary in the same vein as Jessica Jones or Luke Cage and it's not an underdog story like Daredevil. This is the story of a supernaturally competent warrior who abandons his duty to follow his own path and in doing so enters a world filled with people who lie, use and manipulate him. It's the story of a man out of control and floundering for purpose and meaning.

In short, it's very much like normal life, minus the mysticism, martial arts and conspiracies. ...and ninjas.

Danny Rand is off-kilter and filled with rage and doubt. He doesn't understand how ugly and filled with lies the world is. With each betrayal he becomes angrier and less focused, and like the man-child he is, he is unable to process these emotions because in K'un-Lun he was taught to bury their emotions instead of deal with them.

I love the story, it speaks to the basic duplicity of American society and the ease with which we lie to one another. It doesn't challenge social norms, it exposes them for the sometimes horrible things that they are.

Compared to Luke Cage, it has a similar rate of plot development (aka slow), and gives good insight into lack of morality in the corporate world, in the same way that Luke Cage gives insight into the African-American community in Harlem. Analyzing the show on its own, it has good fight scenes, especially given the fact that the actor had to do it instead of a stunt double (since he's not a masked hero). The show gives the main character a good moral compass, and gives a unique story of how he accustoms himself to the modern world and to certain human emotions which he was forbidden from expressing, mainly love. I think most critics bashed this show because they want to see less white leads, even though the majority of the U.S. is white. Unlike critics, I see the good in shows, and this show has a lot of it. 1) Actual moral grey. Yes, I know the punisher killed people, but he only kills BAD GUYS. Having villains who can be reasonable and even sympathetic contrasted with heroes who screw up is just more interesting to me, and Iron Fist does a better job of that than any of the previous series.

    2) Good characterization. Every person in the story has believable motivations and takes reasonable actions to further those goals. None of that "I'm going to destroy the world because I'm eeeeviiiiillll" nonsense.

    3) For the love of god, this wasn't suppose to wrap up Danny's story in a neat little bow. The Hand are going to be the major villains the Defenders fight against. Obviously there's going to be more to come in his character arc, so he's not going to finish dealing with his demons here.

    4) Ninjas. You can hate on it all you want, but I thought the fight choreography was just as good as Daredevil.

    5) Acting. In addition to the returning cast that we love from the other shows, I thought Finn Jones did a credible job, and Jessica Henwick was FANTASTIC as Colleen. Supporting cast was solid too.

    6) Diversity. I liked the wide variety of characters and culture presented in the show. I find it amusing to see people complaining about how the characters aren't fitting into their neat little ethnic boxes like they're supposed to. Why? Is it bad for people to adopt other cultures as their own?

    7) Character growth. Arguably, Danny didn't change that much, and I can see why that would annoy Iron Fist fans, but every other major character in the season went through complete arcs, which is nothing short of amazing. As someone who wasn't a fan of the Iron Fist before this show, I'm just as interested in the Beechems and Colleen as I am in the titular character.

I don't know. To each their own. My order of favorites right now is: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage. I'm looking forward to the Defenders.

Well before it came out Iron Fist was being attacked for 'white washing' and everyone should have known that mainstream media outlets would never give the show the same applause it gave to Luke Cage's BLM friendly storyline. Nonetheless, the degree to which critics are attacking the show is still surprising. 3 out of 10? That's ridiculous. It may not be the best of the recent Marvel wave but its still well acted, with likeable leads and plenty of action. If you really disliked the story you could perhaps stretch to a justifiable 5/10 but any lower than that would be almost impossible to justify in the same way that the show clearly doesn't deserve a 9 or 10. There'S a lot of things that could have been done better, most importantly for me, the fight choreography. Given the premise the fights scenes needed to stand out and pack a real sense of danger and force. As it is they are simply serviceable where they could have been awesome. It is a missed opportunity and likely disappointing for fans of the character. But this only means that the show fails to be a 'great' show, not that doing so makes it skip several grades straight to bad. Thankfully I think most fans of genre entertainment now know that its the fan score rather than the critic score which carries most weight (tbh do critics carry any weight anymore?). Expand

Some people don't get it that Danny has been away from "normal" civilization since he was 10, that's why he still has that naive childish personality, and it makes sense.

The ending is way more satisfying than all of the other Netflix shows so far, they had cool starts and bad endings, this one has a slow start (not bad) and a great ending.

As for the fights, Daredevil had better fight scenes when his fighting henchmen, but in Iron Fist when he fights some cool characters who are not just random thugs, the best fighters from The Hand for example, during those times i felt Iron Fist was really cool, the fight against Zhao Cheng was awesome. There were so many memorable fights.

The problems i had with this show was the camera cuts on the first fights of the series, thankfully the camera calmed down later on the season. Other problem was some characters that didn't quite work and just were there to make the plot move, like Ward Meachum.

I'm giving it a 8, really enjoyed this series, and if you're not getting butthurt because they didn't make Iron Fist asian, then you're going to enjoy it also.

Is it great? No. Is it good? Definitely. It's a shame that you can't rate the critic reviews as helpful or not. They did a shameful job. And I don't even know why. In the comic books, the character is white, and his being white is integral to the story. I'm Asian and I don't care about your crappy politics, but it seems like a double standard when a Finn Jones is cast to play a white character that is white in the source material and the show gets mercilessly chastised, while Idris Elba gets cheered when he's talked about as being the next James Bond, who has been traditionally white.

Every initial critic review had a score of less than 40, which I think held back later reviewers from giving it a higher score. That not one of the critic review has a positive score is very telling, when far worse shows have a lot better critic reviews.

As to the quality of the show, as I mentioned before, it's not a masterpiece, but it often does a good job. There's some stilted dialog, and sometimes you feel like the show isn't going anywhere. But mostly you'll be kept entertained. I agree with other reviewers in that it's on the same level as Luke Cage and Daredevil. The actors do a fine job, but there's nothing truly original about any of the characters. Although you don't have a standout action sequence like in the two seasons of Daredevil, the action is overall pretty good.

Go watch it for yourself. DON'T TRUST THE CRITICS ON THIS ONE.

Maybe it was because of the outrage prior to it starting because the main character wasn't played by an Asian. Maybe it's because the Marvel canon seems to get so huge and remain so good that they felt the need to knock them down a bit. But it sure wasn't based on the actual quality of this show and in all actuality, this is just as entertaining as the other three Marvel/Netflix ventures. I felt that all of the characters on this show had interesting story lines; and as much as they revolved around the Iron Fist (aka Danny Rand), they worked on their own individual levels as well. That's not something you see all the time, and many subplots can get in the way of a show as a whole. I was especially intrigued about the twists and turns of the Meachum family and I liked how the dynamics kept switching. I also felt the Colleen Wing character had her own troubles and beliefs she had to struggle with to be interesting as well. So what was their major beef? Well, let's start with the most obvious and the one that is actually true. The Iron Fist's fight scenes were not up to par; that is glaringly obvious and something they truly need to look at when season 2 comes around. Especially when you're comparing them to Colleen Wing's. She was awesome and I don't know if I should credit the actress, Jessica Henrick, or her stunt double, but I'm going to give more credit to the actress because she also did a good job in the role other than the fight scenes. The second biggest complaint that I've read was Danny's character as a whole. Let's be honest, he's not always likable. He's stubborn & pigheaded, a bit childish as well as a little quick tempered. I'm going to assume the majority of the critics did not watch the whole series, but only the first few. Because as the story progresses, it becomes clear that he is like that for a reason. And really, it isn't truly out in the open until the final episode when Gao bluntly tells him why he is the way he is. He also has a very immature, naive side of him as well that some may have found annoying. I found his utter lack of understanding business a bit ridiculous. But I pose this question: what if you entered into the real world after only being surrounded by mountains and monks and your education was limited to the philosophies of life and learning your "chi"? Yeah, you probably be a little confused and stupid too. So maybe get over it now. Maybe there was a problem with the pacing of the show; is that it? Well, we all know that each one of the Marvel/Netflix shows has a problem w/ pacing (and quite frankly, alot of other quality shows suffer that same thing). Jessica Jones could have been a whole 2 episodes shorter. And Daredevil, as much as I enjoy it, is even worse. So it's a non-issue, really. Especially since the second half of Iron Fist doesn't suffer that problem at all.

I think I've made my point. You can watch this on it's own or as part of the Marvel Universe and I think you'd enjoy it. There's alot to like. The plot that drives the story is interesting and will keep you wanting to keep watching.

One more shout out: to Rosario Dawson, because I don't think her, or her character Claire Temple, get enough credit. She's the backbone to these superheroes and Rosario does an awesome f--king job playing the part. Can't wait to see her in the Defenders!

There's good commentary about social views of mental illness, vagrancy, a hard look at the 1% and how any sort of Outsider culture makes you seen as a pariah. They also managed to give Danny a unique fighting style where he seems to flow around his opponents and doesn't take the beatings that Daredevil and the Punisher seem to take. Finn Jones does an admirable job capturing this mix of cultural naivety, zen wisdom and agitation after having grown up in an enlightened society and now being thrust into the materialistic and judgmental world of NYC. Perhaps the critics were expecting more punching and action from a show called Iron Fist, or perhaps they were still annoyed that the character is a "white savior" trope and wanted to play social justice warrior and see an Asian Actor cast in the role. Even though in so doing you'd greatly lose some of the themes prevalent in and its source material and just reinforce an already beaten to death stereotype that all Asians know martial arts. Expand

Whilst critics reviews rated Iron Fist poorly, I believe they were overly harsh. Despite not being the best of the netflix series, Iron Fist was solidly entertaining, and lacked the cheesiness that caused Luke Cage not to work for me.
It is worth noting that pacing continues to be an issue for these series, and that Iron Fist contains less comedic elements than other series. The show does however do a good job of presenting Danny Rand as a character, playing up a combination of naivite brought on by living outside the world and emotional trouble papered over by a calm exterior, played well by Finn Jones. Whilst the casting of a 'white saviour' is problematic as many have stated, it is only a little more pronounced here than in Batman or similar. In addition, Rand's role as an outsider in both worlds due to the young age at which his training began is used as a more significant plot point than would normally be expected, especially as his background becomes more clear- this does not excuse the issue, but the situation surrounding certain decisions in the plot does derive more meaning, and emotional significance than many takes on the trope. In fact, a more jarring casting decision seems to be that of Davos, one of Rands friends from the monastery who is explicitly stated to be a local, yet speaks with one of the most obvious south of England accents I have heard in American TV. Apart from this, Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing provides a more grounded counterpoint to Jones' cheery optimism and bravado, getting the part spot on and forming a major draw to the series. The side characters are well played and mostly interesting, though the aforementioned pacing issues do lead to their stories being a little convoluted.
In terms of the main arc and themes, loss and revenge feature heavily after the mid point of the series, whilst duty is another important factor in Rands development- I do however think the themes were a little unfocused and patchy perhaps because the writers lacked a good way to pair Rand's optimism and naivite with the more serious emotional aspects of the character. Iron Fist also takes a reasonably well discussed look at the cult like set up of the Hand, making good parallels with less respectable real world organizations and cults, especially given the mix of mysticism and pragmatic organization involved.
For fans of Daredevil, the re-ocuring Hand are explored in more depth, with a generally good appreciation of the previous story-telling. It is especially notable that the events of Daredevil S2 seem to have quite depleted the army of ninjas available to them, with their leaders resorting to more conventional gun wielding goons at times- while this may be a reasonable plot point, as it seems unlikely the supposedly secret Hand could have literally hundreds of ninjas hiding just in New York, it does remove some of the threat from the hand, who are overall messier and less sinister than their previous counterparts. There is a notable exception to this, in a scene which directly calls back to one of their most nefarious activities, but otherwise their evil seems limited by comparison to Nobu's efforts in Daredevil season 2.
Overall, whilst Iron Fist suffers from the same pacing issues as previous Marvel-Netflix collaberation's and lacks the intimidating bad guys of Jessica Jones or Daredevil, it is entertaining and is, even in its worst moments, on a level with some of the better seasons of non-MCU super hero TV. In fact, the only regard in which it suffers by this comparison is that, in being somewhat late to the party, it can be fairly criticized for lacking originality, given the reasonably well trodden path of its setting and world.

    3) Colleen Wing is a terrific sidekick, but is thrust into a more parental role than most. Her character shows stress of the real world like the rest of the Defenders, but she is kind enough to help Raynd. can't wait to see where this goes.
    4) The brother/sister relationship between the Meachum children really shines. They love each other but are both of various degrees of ruthlessness. Ward looks like the most stressed and tired 30 year old billionaire the world has ever produced.

    Cons:
    1) Some of the dialogue isn't well written. There is uncomfortable silence and cliche lines. This happens occasionally, but not often. Jone's is usually the victim and tries his best, but come on writers... make it a little snappier!

In regards to character development, it would be interesting to compare Danny to Spiderman and DC's Green Arrow. Spiderman in that it truly is indicative of the post high school searching for yourself kind of story. I don't expect to like Danny, in fact I kind of can't stand him in the first few episodes, as he represents the I know-it-all kind of attitude and then is faced with read world challenges and flakes or folds. The similarities to DC's Green Arrow on the CW is that Danny suddenly is a billionaire and has to understand how to navigate the nuances of politics as well as social relationships. Green arrow is silly, campy, and many times unbelievable. Iron Fist is rooted in the metaphysical and that he is the "chosen one" is even more hilarious as he has no idea what to do with this kind of power. Again a typical young adult who thinks they know it all, until they are affronted with the brutal reality of the real world.

The acting is all right. But seriously, I am not expecting the Piano. I will say the Meachums are done well. So much so you have a brewing hatred for all of them. But there is beauty in each of the character as they represent the flaws of humanity. Whether it be power hungry, corporate greed, or selling your ideals for the love of the fight, all of the characters thus far are intricate and well acted.

Finn plays between Chris Platt from Guardians of the Galaxy and the doped up hippie kid that lives next door. While his performance is not new and noteworthy, he does the character justice if he is acting as an adult in his early twenties.

Ward and Joy are well acted. You hate them. You try and find a redeeming quality about them, only to be disappointed once again, that kind of dastardly feeling is reserved for Geoffrey Baratheon and Ramsey Bolton. I say it's well done.

The breakout star in my opinion is Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing.) Through her you feel the pangs of trying to commit to something in your life and things just not quite falling into place. Hers is the story of following your passion, and it not being enough to pay the bills. Watching her fight is invigorating, and while she is no Ip Man, or Jet Li, it's nice to see someone that has a reasonable range of martial arts skill and what it would look like without the smoke and mirrors.

It's a fun ride. It won't rock your world like Man in High Castle, but seriously folks it's a superhero movie.

Also - when he 'cleaned up' and suited up, he should also have gotten a haircut to look more like Danny has recently looked in the comic books. The fight choreography could also be better.

It's good that Davos was introduced since this could easily lead up to one of the better story arcs from the comic book, Lei-Kung, and all that stuff.

Jean Claude Van Damme's earlier films had more exciting choreography than Iron Fist. That is not to say the martial arts here isn't fun to watch, it's just that it should be much more compelling.

Danny Rand himself is fine, but the supporting cast of characters of Ward, Joy, and Harold are fantastic. Ward especially won me over as the season went on. The acting all around is very good and saves the show in my opinion. Lots of laughs too. Iron Fist started off kind of goofy but became darker as it went on, which I welcomed.

There is plenty of room for Iron Fist to grow. The fight scenes need improvement, and the story could explore more themes of substance. They certainly have a great cast to pull all this off.

Usually I agree with the general perceptions of critics, but I really enjoyed this Iron Fist. Each of the Amazon Marvel series has had a different feel. This one had a lot of kitsch. The main character IS very frustrating, but that is who he is. He has stunted development because of his history.

There are some good performances and I enjoyed the continuity from previous entries in the Netflix Marvel universe. I didn't have anything else to watch at the time and this is a light entry with decent action sequences (never living up to Daredevil's best entries, but fine) and some comedy thrown in.

These issues were always going to be a problem for Iron Fist, because they are inherent to the show's source material.

On the other hand, as a fan of Finn Jones (an actor who embraced representing a stigmatized minority - another one that I belong to - in a year when it was still relatively risky to do so) I can't help but to want to give him a pass.

Looking past all that for a second and I found a competent, if at times clunky, addition to Netflix's Marvel lineup. Some of the dialogue is a bit awkward, the characterization can be inconsistent and not all the fight scenes have the oomph that we might have come to expect, but overall, the show is serviceable. I felt engaged in the narrative far more than I felt put out. More than that, Iron Fist's storytelling succeeded on a basic level that Netflix's previous Marvel entry failed to do for me: at the end of every episode, I wanted to see what would happen next. That's something Luke Cage the show failed to do for me, even despite how much I liked its titular protagonist and his allies.

I think ultimately, I'm glad there is a dialogue happening about some of the valid criticisms Iron Fist as a character is receiving.

At the same time, for my personal enjoyment, I'm glad I watched this show.

An enjoyable show, that does suffer from some early pacing, but is over all a very enjoyable part of the greater defenders story arcs. The set piece action sequences are spot on, and the acting serves the story well. Check it out for yourself, and don't let the critics decide for you.

So far I'm half way through the series (the same amount of episodes that the critics got to review it) and I can say I agree with the critics on several things. Iron Fist is without a doubt the weakest of the Netflix Marvel shows so far, it's the only Marvel show that has noticeable plot holes and Danny Rand is a bit of an idiot. But that all being said it's still a 6.5/10 show in my opinion and I'll explain why.

Yes Iron Fist is weaker than Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones. The main reason is its lack of social commentary or not really it's lack so much as it's inability to approach it in the correct way. The clear commentary it is trying to make is a individuals versus corporate interest type of commentary. This is made clear by Danny's number of changes he wants to make to Rand industries when he's back in town. Unfortunately the show approaches this with little care by making Rand industries look evil in many aspects but at the same time making Danny look like a complete and total madman.

Secondly there are some plot holes. They largely revolve around character motivation. Both Colleen Wing and Joy Meachum both do certain things that seem to go against their character. For Colleen it's her eventual cage fighting and for Joy it's her never ending flip-flopping on Danny while at the same time she's a decisive business woman.

Thirdly you have to talk about Danny Rand. In my opinion Finn Jones portrayal of him is fine but he's written in a way that puts him in between having a sweet childlike naivety and being a madman for justice. The way he approaches situations is the main reason that he gets into trouble and it appears that he didn't learn social skills while growing up in K'un-Lun.

Lastly, I have to address the idea of cultural appropriation a bit. In my opinion Iron Fist could have made great commentary on this aspect but instead they ended up with a show that was somewhere in the middle of being a straight crowdpleaser for classical Iron Fist fans and trying to highlight this issue. I feel like Danny correctly embraces his adopted culture but he does it so awkwardly that it can't help but come off a little bit like a white guy doing kung fu in a 1970s movie. It's clear that that they were cognizant of this criticism but opted not to really address it at all which is odd since other Netflix series (such as Master of None) address it perfectly.

Now despite all that criticism... Iron Fist is very entertaining. There's something pleasant about seeing Danny half-blunder being a business man, half-blunder being a monk and half-blunder being a super hero. His goofy niceness and naivety makes him more human. The show also features both the characters of Colleen Wing and Harold Meachum which honestly are much more interesting to follow throughout the series. Especially Harold, what are his motivations? The pacing is pretty good it balances the Rand business drama with action fairly well and manages to still have the gritty Netflix-Marvel feel.

Is Iron Fist the best Marvel show on television? No. But is it damn entertaining? Yes. Am I still excited for the Defenders? Of Course.

    Overall Score: 6.5/10

Maybe it's because I was expecting the worst after reading some of the 'professional' reviews, but this was pretty decent. Not great, but better than average.

I thought the main actor was a miss-cast. Most of the time his acting is ok, but at certain times when he was acting enraged or sad, it just felt off. It could also be due to the director's instructions, but it didn't look good.

Which goes for the fight scenes as well, you could sometimes see an attacker go slowly in their offense to give time for the heroes to react to them. I know the fighting is fake, but I don't want to 'see' that it is.

Story wise I thought this first season was solid. I didn't get bored with the villains or the storyline, and thought most of the actors did a pretty good job portraying it.

It's obviously not as good as Daredevil, which no other Netflix Marvel series has been able to reach to be honest, but it certainly isn't as bad as Jessica Jones. So yeah, it's above average: a 7.

The worst part is the music. It's just horrible. It's a mishmash of Mass Effect and Tron: Legacy for the ambiance music, with a rare touch of trance. Then the artist music in it is just the worst and actually detracts from the scenes.

The acting is anywhere from adequate to moving. Finn seems to be VERY subjective to the director. He has some quite acceptable and even fun/impressive. Then he has others where it is just cringeworthy. Fortunately, that director only had that one episode. Jessica Stroup is about the most consistently good actress in the series, followed closely by Wai Ching Ho who will just creep you out at times (though the same bad director used her HORRIBLY in his episode). Rosario gives here worst performance from across the Netflix/Marvel series overall.

The writing is about all that saves this series from dropping to a 5 or 6. The execution is often the problem. The obviously largest impact is the directing, followed by the acting and music. Perhaps a new producer might be able to get a hand (not a pun, seriously) this and wring the bad directors out and get a competent music director to perhaps bring in a little asian undertone to the ambiance music and chose some fitting artist music that is more fitting to the scenes.

Probably the biggest issue comes from Danny Rand himself. He's just not very believable as a hero. This is partially due to the writing's portrayal of the character. He's less kung fu master and more airheaded rich boy. Danny has a rather irritating habit of barging into people's lives and expecting them to just drop everything to help him out because his daddy owned a company. Apparently being raised by monks for 15 or so years didn't help him lose that sense of entitlement that comes with having a lot of money. That's not to say he's unlikable though. In fact, at times his naivety and genuine sweetness is outright charming in a natural way. Danny is at his most likable when he's doing things like absent mindedly making an origami flower for his secretary while talking to her. It's a shame he can't sell the fighter part.

Another reason the Iron Fist ends up being the weakest part of his own show is due to the fact that the performance of Finn Jones also leaves a bit to be desired. It's like they picked him based off of his looks as opposed to actual ability to play the character. To be honest the acting is pretty weak all around. Everybody is just kind of phoning it in for that Marvel money. Well, that's not entirely true. Jessica Henwick and Tom Pelphrey are both enjoyable. Mostly because they are given the strongest writing.

As far as the actual plot goes, it too leaves something to be desired. The first half of the season can be kind of a drag as not much is happening outside of Danny having troubles being reintroduced to live in NY. It isn't until half way through that the action picks up. Even then it's often more interesting to watch the side-characters engage in boardroom politics than it is to see Danny struggle with his arch enemies "The Hand." There are still some compelling elements to that side of things though. Danny's PTSD from witnessing the death of his parents adds some more depth and the returning Wai Ching Ho as Madame Gao is just as fantastic as ever.

The action isn't too bad either. Nowhere near as good as Daredevil though. The choreography could use some work here and there and like I said Jones just isn't very believable as a hero, much less one of the MCU's most skilled martial artists. There are still plenty of awesome fights though. Particularly whenever Henwick's character gets involved in some very exciting sword fights. It's all certainly much more exciting than watching Jessica Jones and Luke Cage awkwardly flip bad guys repeatedly.

This is more of a cheesy martial arts movie that a full-fledged and polished entry into the MCU. It's evident not as much care went into this as with the previous MCU shows. The choreography is lacking, the writing can get pretty hokey, and it's miscast is several key ears. Yet, at the end of the day I didn't find it to be an outright abomination. In fact it can be pretty fun. It's just that you really have to be into the whole superhero thing to put up with it's more glaring flaws, of which there are an obscene amount for something baring MCU connections.

Just don't even watch the first 3 episodes of Iron Fist. They're awkward, boring, and by the end of the season, you're really wondering why they weren't just a 15 minute sequence at the beginning of episode 4. Once you get past episode 3, the show picks up quite a bit, but Danny's lack of maturity throughout the whole thing does get a little grating.

Ultimately, not as bad as the

Ultimately, not as bad as the critics made it out to be, but definitely the worst of the Marvel's series from Netflix. Worth watching if you've watched the others and plan to watch the crossover series, but definitely a pass by itself.

Great show. I dont know why that many of bad reviews. Acting is great, story is good. The biggest weakness of this series are, unfortunately, fight scene. Editing a.k.a. disease Parkinson (like **** residents movie) when in this type of movie where important is martial arts they should take examples of stables long shots like Daredevil or John Wick.

Unfortunately, the trouble with Iron Fist doesn’t end once you start actually watching the show, which like its character, is occasionally sweet, frequently maddening, and ultimately kind of lost in Marvel’s New York.

The clunky dialogue often creates the sense that the show doesn’t trust its audience. ... Everyone fights the same, and no one looks interesting doing it.

If Iron Fist pulls it punches in the originality department, it excels in thrilling martial arts action. [20 Mar - 2 Apr 2017, p.19]
