Clunes felt right, clutching his flask of coffee and delivering an authentic, contained performance of a decent, unflashy grafter. ... It takes a very good actor to make a real, do-it-by-the-book detective, who isn't a hard drinker and doesn't shoot from the hip, come alive on screen. I still think it's too soon, but it is in responsible hands.

Manhunt bleaches out the titillation and zeroes in on the detective work, which is an honorable diversion from the norm even if there are some dramatic trade-offs along the way and some shortcomings on the character-development side. The one fully drawn person here is, not surprisingly, Sutton (played by Martin Clunes of Doc Martin, Vanity Fair, etc.).

Absorbing. ... Manhunt practically defines the procedural in its documentary-like focus on methodology. [4-17 Mar 2019, p.11]
-
Manhunt’s navigations of clues and dead ends at times are enough to keep this pot simmering if not boiling. Nor is there anything wrong with Clunes’ lead performance, which unfortunately is in service to a not-so-greater whole.
-
This sober, responsible production that has even managed to avoid the temptation of hyping it as Martin Clunes’s first foray into straight drama and aggrandising him or the production at their expense.
