Martin aims to make SAP one of those good, small, delicious moments, and they succeed.
-
Sometimes, Martin’s self-effacing looseness muffles the impact of promising material; more often, though, it has the unaffected pleasure of hearing a friend share a good story they’ve heard.
-
A better show would find more connective tissue and a funnier one would tighten up some stories, cut one or two and add a few punch lines. But doing that might also make Martin seem more like everyone else. It’s already an amusing, effortless vibe here, one whose pleasures derive in part from being comfortable to be what it is.
-
Martin acknowledges at one point they’re perhaps preaching to the choir in the theater, but perhaps more than a few viewers unfamiliar with Martin will happen upon their special and learn a thing or two, too.
