It allows the mind to roam across many questions while the story unspools efficiently before you, asking little in the way of mental or emotional investment and giving much in the way of solidly old-fashioned whodunnitry. Pairs well with apple crumble and custard or large slabs of Dairy Milk.

Alice's vendetta against an equally lethal gangster keeps distracting poor Luther from a lurid case involving a fetishistic serial killer. It's all a bit much, but if it weren't, it wouldn't be Luther. [27 May - 9 Jun 2019, p.12]

The enthusiasm for the latest four-episode run -- which again features Ruth Wilson's implacable killer, Alice Morgan -- dissipates amid a subplot involving another psychosexual serial killer, feeling more tired than usual.

Yeah at this point Luther is getting a bit stale and I hope the film is either a) completely refreshing or b) if it continues the same toneYeah at this point Luther is getting a bit stale and I hope the film is either a) completely refreshing or b) if it continues the same tone the last Luther media we see. It's a one trick pony really and, whilst that trick is very good, it ultimately is not enough to carry a show for 5 seasons. The issues that I may have overlooked in previous seasons as the show was just so stylish and new are now really distracting - the entire police department in Luther are so useless it's a wonder how anyone keeps their jobs (although reading met reports irl maybe there's more truth than fiction in this haha) and the killers are so one-note and underdeveloped it's crazy. It's a show full of contrivances and stretched logic.

Of course Idris and Ruth are stellar as always but I get the sense that even they are a bit bored of their characters now. So long, farewell Luther - you were good when you were good but the last couple of seasons have been very very meh.
