So what was initially a fresh, bada@@ story devolves into a mismatched genre hybrid that has you scratching your head and laughing out loud at how terrible and incohesive it is. Initially it's like a high tension Greenbook with a magical quest element trying to find lost father, then it's suddenly a vampire/monster tv show, then a castle/wizard thing with crazy spells and supernatural powers, then a haunted house. On episode 3 the entire show essentially resets and the first storyline is just gone. It's like a season 2. I wanted to have a cooll bingeworthy show and instead it was a STRUGGLE to get through episode 2 and 3. Now it's time to move on. Watch and you'll see what I'm talking about.… Expand

A clumsy disappointment....oddly, it feels like a show fit for the CW. The first episode is almost insidious in its full tonal rejection of Lovecraft's malevolent and astonishing vision.

I was really looking forward to this series. I love the concept because what black people lived through in the 50s is the closest you can get to real-life horror. However, the two episodes so far have been abolute trainwrecks.

Every shot looks absolutely stunning; there's plenty of eye candy for horror and sci-fi fans. But with such weak storytelling and such paper thin characters, it's very obvious the writers are not capable of organically adapting the novel into a show.

The characters are not fleshed out in the slightest and have no discerning qualities other than that they're victims of racism, and the show's blunt, cartoonish depiction of racism leaves zero room for depth or subtlety. I know there's only been two episodes, but even HBO's Watchmen already served as a fantastic criticism of white supremacy by this point.

I think the show is just trying to do too much all at once, because the end result is much less than the sum of its parts. It's really bad at exposition, and the writing is no better than any given episode of Scooby Doo or Goosebumps.

I'm going to keep watching because the special effects are next level, but there's nothing else going for it. It doesn't work as a horror story, or as a story about racism in the 50s because of how cheesy and poorly written it already is. There should not be this many plot holes after only two episodes....… Expand

Terrible two first episodes, the show is well directed, great camera work, lighting, sets, but it's all style over substance, they jump from one setting to another without explanation, terrible writing, characters doing things that make noTerrible two first episodes, the show is well directed, great camera work, lighting, sets, but it's all style over substance, they jump from one setting to another without explanation, terrible writing, characters doing things that make no sense(like driving a car into a cabin for no reason) rushed set pieces, black people talking like current day SJW'S, there's a part where they are looking at the mansion and observing how beautiful it is, and Uncle George asks how did he have money to build the house, which the white man replies "He was into exports" or something. Which makes Leti reply "wittily" reply with "That's codename for slaves" Not to mention Leti saying "White people don't season their food" This wouldn't be a problem if it was done more subtly, but it's not, it's horrible writing.
Let's talk about how characters one episode before barely knew each other and barely had any attachment and in the next episode they overly attached and emotional with no character development whatsoever, it makes no sense.
Also the out of place music "Whitey's on the moon" which critiques a white person being on the moon, while black people on planet earth are starving, poor etc, you get the idea. It's completely out of place and doesn't fit the scene at all, it's just there to bring up the argument of "REPARATIONS" that black lives matter have been clamouring for quite some time now.
Overall the first episode was way way better than the second one, i'm going to watch it more, but the show lacks in a lot of departments, storytelling, Leti is a mediocre actress, she's just there to play the "strong black woman that makes fun of white people part" nothing else.
But all in all, it's a mediocre show that feeds on politics and sjw talking points, nothing special about the dialogue, character development, writing, the only good things is the amazing production value for a TV show.… Expand

Unfortunately, by the 8th episode, I have lost interest in Lovecraft Country. I have 2 episodes to go and it feels like a slog. I have 2 episodes to go and it feels like a slog. Part of me doesn't really want to finish it so I can move on to Raised By Wolves. The plot is getting too convoluted. I understand each episode is a different genre, but the title "Lovecraft Country" is misleading. There aren't really hardly ANY Lovecraft monsters - it revolves heavily around magic/witchcraft. The Shoggoth monster doesn't really look much like the actual Shoggoth from the stories, either. But I do like its design. I'll give it that. Unfortunately, the acting is one big ham sandwich. Most of the characters aren't very redeemable, either. One character, Letitia, is very under developed too. She needed more character development but I guess they cut that for time. (We got more character development for a random lover of Atticus' overseas.)

I like the social commentary on race. That's the doing of the author who wrote the book. However, that stuff does become exhausting after 8 episodes. It's important to demonstrate but I'm sensing that it's the primary focal point of the narrative, with dark fantasy peppered in here and there. It's also becoming very repetitive, which is starting to wear on me as a viewer.

I haven't seen the final episode, but I can't imagine there will be a season 2 of this show. The show is based on a single novel and you can't sustain a long-running show by repeating the same message against racism in not just every episode, but every five minutes of every episode. I embraced its message at first, which brought tears to my eyes, but now I feel desensitized. That's the opposite of what should be happening with that message. I fear that the showrunners are overdoing it so much that they're ruining it.… Expand

Just boring. The first episode is really good, the following ones are weaker and weaker, and eventually I only wanted it to finish so that I can go and watch something else. I was bored to hell. I had such high hopes for this series and it was a huge disappointment. The story is meandering and nonsensical. There's no attempt to make any of the characters psychologically believable. Ultimately, it feels cartoonish and juvenile.

I completely understand what they're trying to go for and it misses the mark completely. The plot is nonsensical, the dialogue is terrible, and the magic aspect of the show is downright moronic. I've been watching this along with friends and we've tried so hard to enjoy it but it feels like an insult to our intelligence. I have no idea how Jordan Peele is involved with this because it is far below his regular caliber of production. Every metaphor, allusion and easter egg hits like a brick. I've never felt so insulted from a show being on the nose before this one. It watches like a poor man's "Watchmen" (HBO) or the fever dream of a 19 year old Hotep. It saddens me that this is getting praise simply because of the political environment and Peele's involvement.… Expand

Very mediocre fantasy; the world-building was very poorly done - I felt we were hopping from one set to the next. Then infuse it with 2020 political agendas and you have the recipe for one painful first episode.

While people hail the brilliance of the first episode I found the storyline tedious, long pan shots of neighborhoods that added nothing to the story, social justice lectures that verged on neo-marxism and demonic white people who'd sooner shoot someone for sitting down than ask them to leave.
None of this was remotely interesting or scary in the least. NGL I laughed while they were being chased the setup of the scene just bordered on ridiculous. The scene felt anachronistic for what I know about the era- yes it was dangerous to be black in the south, but it could not have been that dangerous. In another instance of playing with historical facts to make a point, the show also decided to paint rural Massachusetts as a racist hotbed. But politics aside I cannot understand why this show has drawn so many accolades, well besides politics. The whole show I wanted to see the Lovecraft universe. I wanted to see the monsters (not just the white ones) but most of the narrative of the first episode revolved around gathering information. It seemed that all the characters had the library of congress in their heads and could assemble scattered facts from the 17th century to the present at whim. There was also talk of translation, and I remember thinking "oh geez they're not gonna do that."
I feel this show failed- both as an exposition about racism but especially as a show about horror. Rather than a bunch of two dimensional demons, what if the white characters had been shown descending into psychotic racial violence after being influenced by Lovecraft's monsters?
The most frightening thing about monsters isn't their violence, or their grotesque appearance, but rather the simple fact- that we could all become monsters ourselves.
That is real horror and the show fails in that regard.
On a positive note The acting is good. I liked the characters. But it is just not a good show.… Expand

The writing is atrocious, the story is predictable, and the characters are unbelievable. To make matters worse the show lacks any moral compass: all white (devils) are cartoonishly racist (they’re probably born that way) and the main protagonist (which we are expected to care about) slaughters civilians like he’s in the Waffen SS immediately followed by a phony love-conquers-all redemption story with a nurse/monster who knows he tortured her only friend to death.… Expand

Sometimes it's silly fun and interesting. But most of the time it's blaming white people, especially white men. On the bright side;
- Solid acting performances overall. Michael K. Williams and Courtney B. Vance couldn´t act badly even if they wanted, and the rest of the cast is very competent

- Except for the last episode, wich is boring as hell, the series has a good pace. It is not boring for the most part, even if it is infuriating at the same time
- The popular music scores are ok. Not the incidental music, wich is generic and poor, and do not matches well with the action.
On the wrong side:
- It has nothing to do with Lovecraft. I know some people say that this is not a valid point because it is an adaptation from a novel, not from Lovecaft´s work, but this is crap. It just means that the novel have the same weakness. If you name something after Lovecraft, you can´t seriusly expect his fans won´t show up to check it out. Either you are a fool or you are swindling the audience. This is just a generic horror show, with Lovecraft´s name on it, for no good reason.
- I know much has been said about the woke nonesense on this show, but almost all of it shortcomings erupt from it. It really seemed as if they had a checklist or something, oherwise I can´t understand the necessity of things like a full frontal nude from a native american transgender, a Diana Ross-like interdimensional alien being, the whitewashing of north korean comunist agents, the blue haired woman, the transhumanism, or the extended family propaganda, just to name a few things.
- The dialogues are very bad. Since all of the performers are good at their job, this is somewhat eclipsed, but it is there
- The plot is mediocre at best. The main concern of the writers wasn´t to tell a good story, but to promote an agenda, and, as always when that is the case, it shows. There is more concern in interseccional coherence - if such a thing can exist- than to explain why the characters act the way they do. Unless of course, like the writers seem to think, all of this can be expained just by your race and gender, in the sense that just by being a white heterosexual person you are a racist **** at best, and that all of the bad traits of the BIPOC characters can be explained by their Heterosexual CIS-normative, racial or capitalist internalized behavior patterns of self-hatred. - In the end, you can´t create something good if your only motivaton is racism - even if you don´t wanna assume that it is - cynicism and identitary politics. Even the best actress in the world can´t pull off a line like "I wanna kill white people". If you are in the middle of a shooting with your life at risk, you don´t care if someone calls you "girl". If a man eating monster jumps in front of you, you stop pointing your shotgun to the black people you were trying to arrest, and star firing at the goddam monster!
I assume this was suposed to be a fantasy - horror show but with an historical set-up, aiming to provoke reflection about recent past injustices, wich is of course completelly fine. But if you are going to do that, lying about the past, and denying any trace of basic human decency to a complete race and sexual orientation, is not the way to go.… Expand

The writing and characterization are crude, and people in this series consistently do things that have no apparent motivation that would be consistent with human psychology. This show is dominated by its political message, which is that racism is bad. Most people would agree with that laudable sentiment, and would expect more from a show in terms of social and cultural insight as well as entertainment. Lovecraft Country fails to deliver, hammering this obvious and simple message home time after time through the means of cartoonishly evil antagonists and absurd situations. Lovecraft Country is a wasted opportunity to do something interesting and sophisticated with this material.… Expand

She saved them from the policemen on episode 1.
She saved Let in the shooting, made her invunerable to survive all the "back to the future" episode, made her invunerable again to save her in the last episode.
She taught Tic the protection speel, saving him from the shooting too.
She saved Dee from turn into the creepy doll.
She bought them a mansion.

Lovecraft was a brilliant author who founded a whole new genre. We still read and admire it even after one hundred years. "Lovecraft country" is a dishonest show that piggy-backs on Lovecraft's fame and popularity. It's a weirdLovecraft was a brilliant author who founded a whole new genre. It's a weird Frankenstein-style cross-genre monster crudely sewn from 60 percent of black population trauma from the colonial past, 15 percent really primitive jumpscare horror movie, 20 percent everyday life of black people, 10 percent of random sex scenes, because why not? and 5 percent are random rants on various topics. It could be scary, or bizarre (like early Jackson movies?!) or contemplative or thought provoking, but it's neither, because it just falls apart too quickly. Let's just hope it at least jump-started the career of the frankly not very talented writer and other feminist/political activists who clustered up around the project. Watchable... it is not.… Expand
