This show explores the depths of that question along with all the motivations that drive that decent to Hell. I found the pace (admittedly slow at times) to be necessary to build the story and characters and worth the journey. Both Demian Bichir (father) and Madison Baez (daughter) acting is warm and brilliant - along with the cast of co-stars. 5 stars from me! Expand

Now Showtime has released this series with several changes. It's set in modern day New York and the primary cast members are Hispanic or Black. There are several new subplots that just clutter things up. Demian Bichir plays the beleaguered father of a 12-year-old who's been turned into a vampire. There is the troubled next door boy to be befriended, but there's a whole new story about another family searching for cure and even a 3rd story about evil drug dealers. Ultimately, when the narrative sticks to the basic premise, it's interesting, but the side stories water down the effect and there's virtually no tension. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Complete trash that from step one in a single simple episode clearly misses the ENTIRE point of the core material. With a young lead who cant seem to act in this role in the least. And sweeping rewrites that undermine even the slightest hint of taboo that punctuates the very definable nature of vampire lore, choosing rather to hide behind over cautious safety nets.

I am entirely revolted this series has taken the form it is in.

Give it a new title and admit theyre simply stealing surface level bullet points without daring to comprehend the source and MAYBE it will be tolerable.

But as it sits, it'd be like setting Harry Potter in space.
