It’s a rollicking entertainment. There are ticking-clock countdowns to big games, on-the-field implosions, a devotional rap video, a grudge match. Pinkard shines, throughout, a walking exemplar of the possibilities of higher education, talking with raw honesty about her struggles, doing her damnedest to teach her kids about the possibilities of life off the field, opportunities they never learned about. ... What Last Chance U shows time and again is how capturing all of these intertwined fates takes more than just a cursory glance at a clip reel. The first 2 seasons were great as long as you can watch coach buddy with some perspective and not let the abusiveness wear you out. All the characters are really interesting and you really are rooting for the team and each player. So as a former coach who knows what good programs look likeThe first 2 seasons were great as long as you can watch coach buddy with some perspective and not let the abusiveness wear you out. All the characters are really interesting and you really are rooting for the team and each player. So as a former coach who knows what good programs look like it is hard to root for the players when you know that the methods used by the coach are really unnecessary and not at all helpful to the cause (all the screaming and demands for obedience). But the first 2 seasons were fun and compelling. But this 3rd season, all we get is dysfunction and screaming and abuse. I get that it is what it is, and this is reality TV and not intended as a good example of how to coach. But I will just remind the viewers to watch the winning programs on Sat and notice how the coaches are positive and composed and the players are self-motivated and live in a sane world without all the mixed messages. I am rooting for the players, but it really is a seminar on how not to coach or lead a group (with the pretense of being a street-smart coaching success story).… Expand
